  • The last part of a skydive, the scary part for most people, is the landing.
In this video, you will see the final approach and landing, which may only take a few seconds, but it is one of the most significant moments in a skydive.
Let's explore the Flare (slowing down the canopy for a smooth touch down) and the PLF (Parachute Landing Fall - manoeuvre used when things do not go as planned).
Please note that this video shows only basic information for people wondering how skydiving beginners perform their first landings under their student parachutes.
If you are a skydiving student always ask for advice for your instructor.
Get in touch if you want to learn to skydive. I run skydiving courses all year round in Portugal and Spain.

Thank you for this! Doing my A-license progression and am on a 210 (.7 WL). It is great to see a video of non performance parachute landings. Doing visualizations with this video before the next jump!

Thank you for the comment. I'm glad to hear the video is helping skydivers. If you come to Portugal or Spain and need coaching (FS, Freefly, Tracking) I'm here to help. I also run canopy courses and water training for USPA B license. Enjoy the skydiving journey Matt.

@@TheSkydivingTherapist I absolutely will. Finally got good weather to jump again. Stood up all the landings today, on target. Can't believe how much smoother it felt. Thank you!!

the half-flare part is definitely your safety brake...as a new AFF jumper, i had a no-headwind accident last june 2023...came in too fast and full-flared at 15 ft...didn't hold my half flare long enough...2 fractures of the right tibia, chipped ankle bone = 8 screws and three plates. i'm rehabbed up and i'll be jumping again in May. thank you for the video.

I am sorry to hear about your injury. When you get back to the game I recommend avoiding those zero winds days. 5 to 10 kts are perfect. Also, a full flared canopy plus PLF is the best technique to avoid injuries. Always talk to your instructor. Thank you for your feedback.

On my very first AFF jump I couldn't find our landing zone. I kept steering the canopy just fine but didn't know where I was supposed to land. Then my instructor called on the radio and said turn around, turn around you are heading the wrong way. As soon as I did I saw our DZ and completed landing pattern without any issues.

This is a great video for students. There are a lot of videos on flaring, but most of them show flares at much higher wingloadings, much less informative for students than this video.

What size is that parachute. Is it wise to wrap twice the brakes in your hands to shorten them?
