As a native Arabic speaker, my advice to everyone who's learning the Arabic language is: Learn Fusha or MSA ( it's a must thing ) first before trying to learn any Arabic dialect. Learning Fusha is like building your language fundamentals after that, you can learn any dialect by watching Arabic series, whether it is Egyptian, levant or gulf and if you afford traveling it would be nice to hear and learn the dialect from its native speakers. One thing to add about Arabic dialects is that most of the time they're not 100% going with grammar rules which make them hard to understand for beginners and that's why it's important to learn Fusha first because everyone can understand it.

Not useful. I want to understand when people speak and be able to communicate with my neighbors. The majority here (Germany) speak Levantine dialects. It is so much easier to learn than fusha. That one comes with the tv shows I watch and bible verses I read.

@@baum7des7lebens7 It is useful if you want to speak Arabic. But after what you said, you don't want to learn Arabic but a dialect, an Arabic language !
Confusing for Western people but it really is a language, as French, Spanish, Romanian, Italian are languages. In Italy it is quite similar if you know a bit.
So it is deeply useful if you want to speak, read, and "live" the Arabic world

So try it try to learn it from your dad and for the writing we write in arabic letters or with latin letters but we usually use the latin letters .

I’m Tunisian and the Tunisian dialect is only 100/95% understood in Algeria, Libya Mauritania and Morocco. The Tunisian and / or the Libyan dialects are the most “clear/understood” dialect of the maghreb but it’s still difficult for people outside of the maghreb region to understand 100% of what we’re saying. If I talk to a Kuwaiti or a Palestinian I have to change my dialect a little and use fus7a or I try and talk using some of their dialect (if I know it). Take this advice from a native Arabic speaker. If you ever meet someone who asks you specifically about which dialect to learn and not about wether to learn fu7a or a dialect, tell them the following. It’s best if they choose Levantine Arabic or Egyptian Arabic. Levantine is the most clear and easy to understand dialect across the entire Arab world (also the prettiest in my opinion especially Syrian). Egyptian is the most famous one and everyone knows it because Egyptian cinema is very popular in all the arab countries. If I wasn’t a native speaker and I had to choose which dialect, I’d pick Levantine because it’s closer to fus7a than Egyptian.

If the Arabic alphabet is hard for you, learning Arabic is going to take you forever. The alphabet is really easy (this is coming from a non Arabic speaking Somali person). Just focus on learning the script with vowels first because reading it without vowels will be unnecessarily hard unless you already speak Arabic.

The alphabet is not hard at all. It's the same few shapes with a change in the number of dots. You're probably just trying to learn it whenever you have five minutes to spear instead of sitting down and trying to understand

Mike Still Hey Mike great video! I have a question. How many words do you know in Arabic? Individual unrepeated words. You must know a few thousand. Have you been recording them? I know at least 8000. I’m trying to reach ten thousand by the time I graduate. I think once you know 5000 you should be advanced and can say anything but 3000 words later I find it surprising how much there still is to learn. I am curious what words I will learn on my way to ten thousand. I would think I know everything but there is always a word you don’t know. But at this point most of the time I am learning synonyms of words I already know as suppose to new concepts but often I come across a word that doesn’t have an equivalent in English. I learn about 2000 new words a year.

My motivation is to learn how to read academic books in Arabic. Through that, I’d like to enhance intellectual exchanges between East and West, to personally get a bit decolonized from my Western education, and to write publications in Arabic to contribute to my cultural heritage and not end up in « Maghreb literature » section of a library if I choose to mainly write in French (my main language) about Arab matters, or not even Arab matters. I love the poet Mahmoud Darwish, he has been a big motivation to me, listening to him is such a delight.
Do you have any tips for more advanced speakers who would like to read books in Arabic ? Easy children books through more complicated ones etc...

Fares Karam and George Wassouf. (some of their songs have English subtitles)
