@Austinator0630 though to be fair Dread was a entirely brand new game while the Prime 1 Remaster was basically the same game released on the GameCube back in 2002 just with updated visuals, graphics, new models and better controls, it wasn't a complete remake like last years Resident Evil 4 reimagining.

I've noticed a pretty significant uptick in streamers who all went out and bought Prime Remastered after the Prime 4 announcement, so that's something, anecdotal though it may be. I'm still not sure Metroid has the mass appeal though. It's my favorite franchise of all time, but I openly admit its design is very niche. Just being a dark scify game on a Nintendo console alone makes it slip under a lot of people's radars I feel.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess came out in Japan on the same day for GameCube and Wii. In America, the Wii version actually came out first. What made the Wii version enticing was that it included motion controls. I expect something similar here - a cross-platform release, but with a difference in how you play it to take advantage of the new system's trademark features.
(I find it very unlikely, having watched Nintendo for decades now, that their next hardware won't enable radically new kinds of games compared to Switch. They haven't done "the same thing but with better graphics" since the GBA.)

  • @skadi2911
    @skadi2911 Před 9 dny

I still believe the game will be a cross-gen title to showcase the new console's capabilities. And I don't think it would necessarly hurt the game's sales either. As you mentionned, the Switch playerbase can not be ignored, and it won't be. But at the same time, they can also release the game on Switch 2 day one and give it some time to sell well before burning other big cartridges, just like they did with BOTW on Switch. Remember, it was the only "big" game on Switch for a month and a half before the release of MK8DX in April 2017. And Mario Odyssey came out in October of that same year, Xenoblade 2 in December etc.
Similarly, they could absolutely release the game as the only big shiny launch title for Switch 2 and then put out trailers for Mario Kart 9, a new 3D Mario, a new Xenoblade, a new Animal Crossing and so on. All of which would release in the next months or less than a year after the console's release and of course be exclusive titles. This way, the console would have a lot of momentum going for it, just like the Switch did, and people are going to think both ways :
=> Some will buy the console for these new games, but in the meantime they won't have a lot to play aside from that new beautiful looking Metroid game that got people so hyped, so they might jump on board and try out the series
=> Metroid fans and people who get on the hype train for Beyond will most likely think they wanna play this game in the best possible conditions, and these people will likely be hyped by these other new games coming out 6 months or so after the console's release. And so, since they plan to pick up these games as well, they'll likely buy the new console to play Prime 4 on, which will help create a momentum for the Switch 2.
I think doing things that way is a win-win situation for both the console and the game. Nintendo has learned the hard way thath they need to give their consoles a strong first year, but they also know that spacing out releases throughout the year is the best way to keep people interested and create a good momentum going forward.

I'm curious though, what changes would you like to see to prime 2? The type of game this is isn’t accessible to non observant gamers and unfortunately that’s the majority of people who play games. You look at all the top selling games as well as the most popular free to play games and you’ll see a lot of these titles really never ask much of the player at any given time. Almost All of its most popular ip are family friendly, whimsical, adventurous, funny. Fun for the whole family. Metroid, besides being adventurous to an extent, is anything but. Its dark, somewhat gritty, isolationist, not funny or whimiscal at all, would fit right at home disguised as a alien spinoff series. Can also be unnerrving and agressive in nature. Nintendo before has said that they struggle with how to properly market/advertise metroid and these are the reasons why. In the area of "Prime 2 & 3 are a must" I feel compelled to say that they should also consider Prime Hunters and Federation Force as well given that, like them or not they are not only a part of the Prime sub-series but also told about Sylux. They introduced us to him and his story along with his impact and reason as to why he was not only in Prime 3's special ending but also what his plans are as evident with not only his introduction and logbook entry in Hunters but also the special ending of Federation Force. It also builds and completes the story package that some people would like to see, plus it would preserve them in so they won't die for good on the DS and 3DS (though Nintendo is rather spiteful about preserving their history).
Prime's 2 & 3 getting the big-boy remaster like the original Prime would be optimal, Prime Hunters and Federation Force would work fine with the simple HD remaster like Luigi's Mansion 2 HD has. Since those two were not well received there is no need to go overboard with the visuals outside of HD upscaling and such.

The narrative that Metroid has always had low sales needs to stop because it is wrong.
First of all, would you consider Kirby and Megaman to have good sales numbers? On average for a decade, these two series underperformed compared to Metroid’s sales numbers. Kirby’s only managed to do noticeably better with the very first game and the Switch games (although Metroid games also fell off a cliff after Other M so that was a large part of that) while Megaman has never had the sales figures of Metroid. Megaman also only managed to break past 1.5 million with 11 which is average for a Metroid game.
As for the numbers themselves? According to VGSales in millions compared to the best selling mainline game in the Kirby series for that console:
2.73 for the first game (1.75 for Kirby, not even a million for Megaman)
1.72 for Samus Returns (The only win for a while with Kirby at 5.13)
1.42 for Super (A somehow notorious failure despite practically matching the sales of Kirby’s SNES outing at 1.44)
1.6 for Fusion (1.47 for Kirby and the Amazing Mirror)
2.84 for Prime (No equivalent but the N64 Kirby game sold 1.77 on a better selling console)
    1.1 for Prime 2
1.41 for Prime 3 (Another loss but this time for 1.85 for Kirby)
After this point the games actually do follow the supposed Metroid curse, but they’re also games that the Metroid fanbase didn’t like (Other M and Federation Force) or a remake that had a free and more widely known alternative while being on a platform that was being overshadowed by the Switch anyways. It was only really in the 2010’s that Metroid became “cursed,” until then it was a pretty successful series that didn’t cut it when in sales compared to Mario or Zelda. You wanna know what also doesn’t compare to Mario or Zelda in that regard? Most video games.
This idea that Metroid has always been cursed needs to stop. At best it’s a misrepresentation of data and at worst it hurts the sales of the series because it hurts Metroid’s public perception.

There is a such a thing as taking too long and I think Metroid Prime 4 is an example of it. It doesn't help that to the casual audience the trailer showed little new or anything that would entice the broader mainstream.

Let's wait for the next trailer and see if they are able to give us something different that excites us and new comers 🤞🏻

Yes it can and it will! ...Just wait until Nintendo blows the lid on Prime 4 and we get a full blown Switch 2 trailer of Samus spider balling all over the place in new environments, grapple beaming and using new visor abilities vs enemies and puzzles.... boss battles.... chozo... the return of Ridley... and maybe even the Gunship comes into play more... we've seen NOTHING! ...like point 1 % of the game and as we continue to see more... the hype for the game will increase ten fold!

Tbh we dont need ridely back. Literally in prime 1 ridely was already dead and had to be revived, thus meta ridely, this metallic zombie.
This would literally be the definition of beating a dead horse if they brought ridely back. Let the franchise continue to change and evolve

@@mystraunt2705 true.. i'm just throwing some options out there... overall tho I can't wait to see what some of the boss battles look like in Prime 4... they are going to be big, bad, and bonkers!

Nah. It needs to cater to both the hardcore fans and new fans. Legacy mechanics needs to be the same as always, but introduce new mechanics that feels modern and satisfying.

@@ZwhatshQ while I agree that legacy mechanics are important, I don’t think that slow movement is necessarily a trait that qualifies. It really just something that exists because retro underestimated how much slower traversal is in a 3d environment.
When you combine that with the backtracking in metroidvanias it really can cause people to get bored imo

Good lord I agree. I love 2d Metroid because it is exploration-puzzle based while also being fast moving and having a good amount of action. Prime can never have the platforming of the 2d games because it's in 1st person, but it sure as hell would help to have a faster pace, and I really think being creative with some of the power ups (speed booster anyone?) would help too.

Pikmin 4 is the best-selling game in the franchise, the number 4 in the title doesn't matter that much. Metroid Dread is the 5th entry in the 2D series and the best-selling one, another example that the number doesn't matter.

Not confirmed yet but could be a possibility. An actually much needed one since being multiplatform release would increase the game's chances for more sales.

Nope, won't break the curse. They would of had to insert some kind of gimmick that gets everyone excited, even if they're not into the Metroid franchise

I’m feeling in my gut that the switch successor comes out in spring of next year and then Prime 4 comes out around summer, launching the same day for both consoles.
