  • Vitamin D is important for pretty much everything in your body, and a lot of people are deficient in vitamin D. Does sunscreen give you a vitamin D deficiency? How can you keep your vitamin D levels up in winter without risking skin cancer and aging?
    Like most skincare addicts I've long thought that the sun was evil and should be avoided at all costs, but it turns out that's an outdated viewpoint!
    In this video I talk about:
    * Benefits and sources of vitamin D
    * Does sunscreen give you a vitamin D deficiency?
    * How much sun do you need for vitamin D?
    * Health guidelines for sun exposure
    * Things to keep in mind with sun exposure

    Hello!
    I live in a tropical country and was amazed to learn that a great deal of population is vitamin D defficient. While I do take care about my face and neck, I usually do not protect arms and legs but found out that still, I 'm vitamin D defficient. I'm taking supplements now and will be rechecked.
    Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention!

    Great video! As someone with darker skin (Fitzpatrick scale V) and living in UK, I have always been concerned re Vit D deficiency, though more recently I've also been thinking about UVA damage! I like the logic of the Aus guidelines being dependent on UV index which I've always thought is more sensible than a blanket approach that I've always struggled with. We all live in different climates with different levels of exposure, different UV index and different skin tone and many guidelines don't take this into account. Whilst skin cancer risk is very real and devastating, vitamin D deficiency is also very harmful to health and needs more recognition!

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  Před 6 lety +5

      Yes! I wish there were clearer guidelines based on skin tone as well, but the UV index guidelines are very useful! I guess it could get very complex very quickly, with amount of clothing, skin surface area etc...

    • @natashad1272
      @natashad1272 Před 6 lety +4

      Lab Muffin Beauty Science yes that's v true but at the moment most guidelines (except the Aus ones) are too blanket. I think it's also great that multiple specialties came together to develop those guidelines, which probably resulted in a more "rounded" recommendation.

    LOVE this video. Simple and so informative. She is just great. The older I get the more paranoid I am about aging and dammage. If we still miss some spots with sunscreen, will those spots be at risk for cancer? I also wish I could find a video on if a steady tan is healthy or just awful? It's evolutionary, no?

    • @Cr4zyLady
      @Cr4zyLady Před rokem

      I know you asked this a long time ago, but I have heard a few ideas on these interesting points you make.
      Missing spots: layering a few protective options can help (sunscreen+UV foundation+hat etc.), and hopefully you wouldn't miss the same spots day after day (though yes, then they would be at risk)
      Steady tan: apparently a tan is the skin reacting to damage. The melanin we produce is not fantastic at stopping future UV, but it's the best our skin can muster (and yes, some people have an evolutionary advantage and produce more, but this only increases protection by minutes, not completely). So a tan is always a sign of sun damage, it's never 'healthy', and never completely protects.
      I'm not an expert, and this might also be incomplete information, but I found it important for myself as I always felt protected by my natural tan when I was younger 😕😮‍💨🤦

    Thank you, thank you. I've been going nuts with frustration trying to get accurate research on this. I get very little sun due to chronic illness and a high factor suncream so am concerned I get enough Vit D. I live in Ireland and now realise I need supplementation but will keep it at a reasonable level as I know Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and it is very possible to overdose over time.

  • @KattMurr
    @KattMurr Před 2 lety +7

    I've been taking a Vitamin D supplement for years. I learned long ago that I do not tan, so never got into laying out in the sun. Skin cancer is prevalent in my family, so I've avoided being out in the sun for many years. I'm Irish, so tanning isn't our thing. Lol ....in more recent years I've become sun sensitive, so I avoid it even more. Because I've been taking a D supplement for many years, I am not deficient. I surprised a couple different doctors because majority of their patients are.

And rightly so, I checked that where I live currently UV index is next to zero, and during summer it can climb up to 5. So really I should be getting more sun exposure in autumn-winter season if anything.

    So in summer., do I stand out in the sunlight. ( in Australia ) for 10minto 30mintues ... that's what I read.
    Someone told me to stand out for 10mins then stand in the shade to cool dwn a little, then go back out for another 10minute

      According to the Australian guidelines, in summer you'll get enough exposure just going about your daily life even if you try to protect yourself from the sun - so you don't need to purposely stand out in the sun.

      Lab Muffin Beauty Science thanks for your quick reply 🙋🏻‍♀️🌻...... You need to expose a sufficient amount of skin to sunlight to maintain healthy vitamin D blood levels. Wearing a tank top and shorts for 10-30 minutes three times per week is sufficient for lighter-skinned people, while those with darker skin may need longer. ....That's what I read ☝️

      @@dianne6046 The only good way to find out is to get your levels checked - without that information you won't know if you're unnecessarily risking skin cancer, especially in the Australian summer.
