As a Black American, I can appreciate how most of them were really respectful to our food ❤ and they had educational videos to explain what the items were.
Trueeee!
Yes. Agree.
Fr
I'm blk and just learned the real meaning to Hush puppies
What else would they do? Point and Laugh at every dish
lol as a South Carolinian…. Izzy you can’t say pumpkin and sweet potato are the same….those are fighting words.
Oh shut up
NO IT REALLY IS!!! I once said that I didn't like either and got banished from the dinner table for a year! Lmao
😂😂 I said the same thing
I love how he gets emotional too.
I also live in the 843 city and you definitely can’t say that without it being problem
To have collard greens without cornbread is crazy to me
As a black person… knowing that ppl nvr eating soul food is crazy😭😭
Learning that fact about ppl I could understand that and I appreciate that the people was willing to try our food for the first time
That's a very crazy concept. 😭
Especially catfish and sweet potato pie!
I'd love to try it given the opportunity. It sounds *heavenly*
Right?! I had about 3 of these TODAY! My poor arteries but....😅
Soul food.. will make you cry. The food is soul touchingggggg… love that you all did this for Black History Month
Girl, this was disgusting to watch. How did they do this for us when there’s not one black American on here to represent us? This was as distasteful as the food.
As a black woman we don’t eat catfish with tartar sauce we eat it with hot sauce 😂
No all black women. I eat catfish with tartar sauce and hate hot sauce.
@@lisacox3750this!
@@lisacox3750 in reference to my comment it was meant to be funny I really didn’t care to know that you eat your catfish with tartar sauce no offense ma’am but I don’t even eat seafood 🙄😂
I can always tell when non southern folk make "soul food" bc y'all debone the meat for the greens..the bone has all the flavor...the ancestors weep!!!! 🥹🥹🥹🥹✊🏾
Forgive them for what they don’t noweth 😂😂😂
No need to worry, lots of African Americans are not a huge fan of chitterlings😂😂 the reactions are hilarious
Dani having an emotional experience eating grits for the first time was something special to capture on camera, for sure
I read some comments about how some people were upset that there were no African Americans shown in this video. Being an African American woman myself, I can see the reason. It's because we ALREADY KNOW HOW MUCH SOUL FOOD SLAPS! I like the fact that people from other walks of life other than us get to enjoy our food and culture for the first time.
What I'm black and it doesn't matter to me 😊
@foemoe26 Same! I mean, IT'S FOOD! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE ENJOYED BY ANYONE!
Exactly! Why would we have to “try” soul food? 😂😂😂
The segment is for people who never tried soul food..yaul complain about nonsense
@@rasheedamonroe454 I wasn't complaining.
As a Black American southerner, we appreciate yall trying each dish, learning the reasons behind what we eat & for also taking one for the team cuz many of us can't do the chitterlings (texture thing).. And now yall know why our backs are big! 😂😂
It's not only black Food
@@xxtiffany_14xx60Although both Black & White southerners prepare some of the same dishes their are some differences as to how Black ppl prepare Southern food & the reasoning as to why Black ppl prepare certain dishes is a very different history from southern white ppl, so No not All southern food is the same😉
@xxtiffany_14xx60 tiffany is troll, and no one fed her in the comments. Good work guys
Who decided to give them tartar sauce with the catfish instead of hot sauce😂
Soul food is Black American food and is not limited to the South. The south is a huge influence in soul food bc of slavery's presence in the south.
Hope it's not black food
Nope
@@xxtiffany_14xx60yes why are you in ever comment
@@xxtiffany_14xx60Troll
I love how Sharon called it "our history" and I love Sharon so much!!!
Yeah she's genuine. I love her. She didn't try to gaslight us
As a black person from Louisiana… I’ve never felt so disconnected from this country before in my life!!! lol… partially because the soul food wasn’t quite prepared the way we prepare and partly because our dishes seemed so foreign to them lol
Who cooked? (In the mind of every black person)
😂😂😂 I'm kidding, unless ya'll are gonna tell me... 😂
I was thinking it too😂😂😂😂😂
Season and toss that okra in cornmeal
😂😂😂😂
Definitely not one of us, especially when I saw that shrimp and grits and how it was made that Gurl is not black American, where it says your roots to the south she has to be from the diaspora which is not soul food because soul food is cultural not race related
okay jayse I see you!! THIS NEW HAIR IS AMAZING. but can we all agree we are gonna miss his long hair and the way he would flip it. I hope he sees the comments and how everyone is loving it.
I do ❤❤❤
Being Born And Raised In Greenville South Carolina I Grew Up Eating Alot Of These Foods! So Seeing People Who Are From Out West Trying Them Makes Me So Happy! 😅😅😅😅
"It's like salad stew," and "It's between like Kale and Spinach" are LITERALLY the MOST CALI ISH I've ever heard!!😭😭
I’m from Chicago, & I want to say that Soul Food is also definitely eaten by northern black folk too. Most of us are only 1st or second generation northerners anyway. 😂❤
One of my favorite episodes. Me being black and eating all these foods all my life. Was glad to see another culture enjoy it.
Same here. Would rather spread the love then get on here yelling about THAT PIE LOOKS WRONG and NO TOMATOES IN THE HOPPIN' JOHN!
Correction ! WE EAT BLACK EYED PEAS FOR GOODLUCK ON NEWYEARS !
And we eat catfish with hot sauce😭
I’ve seen us eat more fried gizzards than chitlins but ! This was overall GREAT😩🤝🏾💯 I love me some SHARON 😅
agree on the fried gizzard preference ;=
Buddy said he will have the catfish WITH the collard greens 😂 BINGO
These young people have brought me so much joy to watch. I, too, am not black enough for Chitterlings.
Yall gave them folks chitlins; im HOLLERING!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂 I died like nooooo
😂😂😂😂😂
Not the poo noodles😫 chitterlings but no baked mac was a crime!!
I know she didn’t cook them right.
Also
Don’t begrudge chitterlings. Our ancestors were given the leftovers and they made into a delicacy for their strength to work the fields. Don’t disrespect the honor of the ensalved as they made do with what they had to survive.
Why is no one talking about Jayse’s hair?! Love it!
that was the first thing I noticed! I love the cut, but his long hair was also so lucious
CAME TO THE COMMENTS FOR THIS
Because we are here for the food and the history.
I really love how they gave a history lesson with the meal. They are really eating soul food. Warms my heart.
I know he did not call collard greens salad stew 😂😂😂😂😂
Short-haired Jayce got me shookt! Those gorgeous locks, but also, looking really cool with the new do.
I love the food, but Jayce's new look just blew my mind. Hahaha!
as a black Canadian this video was actually so informative I've only heard of a couple of these meals and now I want to attempts making some!
I LOVE that Izzy started singing Schoolboy Q & Kendrick Lamar’s “Collard Greens”😂😂😂❤️
as a black person we know the difference between pumpkin and sweet potato
Yeah y'all eat a lot of sugar for sure. The census says the average American blk woman weighs 170 and up
What does that have to do with sugar. And as a matter of fact, African American people were bred to be stout. We are the result. So now what.
we need a part two with other southern classics. biscuits and sausage gravy, fried bologna sandwiches, chicken fried steak, crawfish bowl with corn and potatoes! so much good food comes from the south yall.
YES
ooh.. 😮 yes plz
Lol @ the shrimp n grits busting that boys chakras open 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
😂😂
Never having Soul-food as an American is Crazy-work😭
As a black woman I am surprised they haven’t had these foods but I’m sooo glad that they like it!
Well soul food is mainly from black/african people. I'm not surprised they haven't had it even if they live in "North America".
As someone who’s born and raise in the south and this video was interesting I forget some ppl don’t actually get to eat southern food all the time.
From the midwest and I've not eaten anything they've tried in this video.. hard to find up here. Though I'd love to try everything except chitlins lol
@xDarkTrinityx yep I'm from Ohio but I cook it on my own
Need to Try Cajun food next time! Gumbo, Jambalaya, Crawfish Étouffée, Boudin, Red Beans and Rice, Boiled Crawfish and Potatoes, Cracklins, Blackened Catfish, Chicken Fricassee. So much good Cajun food!
yes!!
ooh.. gimmie
The only difference between Creole and Cajun food is the seasonings used
Thank you for this episode. As a southern black woman, I’m very happy to see this educational experience for the reactors. Great information. And fyi, grits can be savory or sweet. In my house they are sweet when served for breakfast and savory when served for lunch or dinner! ❤
This is amusing. As a black American I take our food for granted. We learned how to cook it at an early age. Holidays were one big food expo
0:52 - The PTSD from Ash is so strong he can't even believe her that there's no punishment, lmao.
I’ve always been a fan of people vs food but this one right here might be my favorite video. As a black girl who loves her soul food , I learned afew things myself about the history behind some of my fav foods that my family makes. This was a great watch, as always . Love you guys! 🫶🏼
This is my favorite video of all the React channels videos. I've watched it 23 times! I love how they embrace the history behind the food.
I love how every non-black person swears they would never eat chitlins, but eat the hell out of Italian sausages made with the casing of chitlins!
You can not compare sausages to the stank dank of gross chitlins
As a born Southern (G.A.) we know about cream of wheat and Oatmeal so we tend to keep those Sweet but the GRITS are always savory by nature. So never put sugar into grits, (unless you are in the military and wanted Oatmeal and all they had was Grits)
Right? People saying there's a debate. There's people who eat savory grits with cheese and butter, and there's people who are eating grits WRONG! Period, end of story. Sweet grits are for Yankees and Yankees only.
I'm a born and raised Texas native and this was kinda emotional for me. I loved everyone's reactions. I was raised by my grandmother and these meals were all I knew growing up. We didn't eat chitlins but everything else was a staple. On the grits debate, I eat my grits with salt, pepper, sugar and cheese. My grandma used to make broccoli cheese cornbread. I love hot sauce on my greens and ketchup on my fried okra lol. Thank Y'all for this episode.
Or creamed corn cornbread
I agree with all of this
That boy having an emotional experience over shrimp and grits?
I LOVE the south.
Story time: My Grandma used to say, “ if your chid-lins stink then you ain’t cleaned them right!” lol! She was a cook but was like a personal chef for the rich people way before personal chef was a thing! lol! She would go from house to house prepping and catering food for their bridge parties and dinner parties in the 50s,60s& 70s with no help. She was a cook but had the skills of a chef. Her soul food was always pretty and neatly plated. We loved her cooking but I wish we appreciated her even more because I feel like we had no idea how special she truly was. When I see how people elevate soul food today, I think of her. For her taste and presentation were top priority. I My grandma was ahead of her time.❤My grandmother used to clean chitterlings so long until they didn’t stink at all. Believe it or not. She would clean and sing her spirituals. Soak and soak those things over and over (I think with water and baking soda then water and vinegar) while being careful to not totally strip off the meat. Next she would cook them in a pressure cooker with her seasons and spices with celery and onion! She said that also cuts the smell. Then she would sautéed and also would use her own little mirepoix. Finally She would serve on a bed of rice and boy was it good! Her Chitterlings used to taste almost like chopped roasted tender pork shoulder. Full of flavor with awesome texture! It took her a couple days to prepare! Needless to say I do not touch chitterlings and haven’t since she passed away over 30 plus years ago because they smell terrible and I make sure I tell people if your child-lins stink you didn’t cleaned them right! RIP Grandma!❤
OMG, you are telling my story . My mom did chitterlings the same , took two days to clean . She would put green bell peppers instead of celery . When she died it was a long time before I ate them again . Now my cousin has learned to cook them and they are delicious 😋 . I live in Florida so when I visit her in Georgia she would cook them sometimes .
@lindarogers2271 yes she would do bell pepper sometimes instead of celery too 💜
All chitlins stink including your grannny's and they are disgusting
From MS, as a Southerner the way those looked and the selection chosen to represent was as perfect as I could hope for.
Mississippi too
Am I the only one not used to seeing Jayse with such short hair? 😅😂 I almost did not recognize him. Haha!
Someone get Big Mama in the kitchen and cook these foods I bet they all be sleep at the end
Yall wrong for giving them chitlins 😂
Watching other people who are not of African American descent eat Soul Food is very interesting, that's for sure. My mom is from the South. Dunn, North Carolina to be exact. So, I grew up on collard greens, okra, catfish, grits, pigs feet, cornbread, fried chicken, whiting fish, etc. My mom knows how to throw down in the kitchen!!
Idc take my black card I will NEVAAAA try chitlins 😂😂😂
If you ever do, don't be in the kitchen. While they're being cooked i'm warning you
I’m not even going to lie , when I was younger my great grand father used to cook them quite often and I would tear them up 😂🤣. He passed away in 09 and my grandmother tried to prepare some for the first time in 2010 and I almost died…. If you didn’t know what you were eating and they were done right chefs kiss 😂😂😂
AT ALLLLLL
@@TheMtVernonKidI have to agree! That mess will stink up your whole house 😂
Same
When she said what’s soul food… I was like baaabbbyyy that back gone get wide when you find out. Have you ready to take several naps 🤣😭
Lol I love soul food😊
Not only were hush puppies a distraction, there were a way for Enslaved humans to build a relationship with dogs so that it’d be more difficult for the dogs to be commanded to rip them up.
No lie as a true southerner... this is a full meal. Not separate meals
Yall dead wrong for giving them those chitlins 😂😂
You can definitely tell the difference between pumpkin pie and sweet potato pie. As a black person from the south. I eat everything on here. except for the Chitlin
Collards, cornbread, pintos with a slice of tomato and onion is EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!
I am gonna start preparing my beans right NOW!!!!!!!
Now you’re talking
Tarter sauce doesn’t go on catfish. Hot sauce ONLY.
Both idc
Hot sauce and ketchup
Hot sauce and some mustard
@@geriadair1512we do not care we said wat tf we said
Try Not to Eat has DEFINITELY traumatized all the Reactors lol
I can’t do the chitlins😂 but collard greens with cornbread is my favoriteeee
FR throw in those pinto beans and im floating.
I love to save the pot liquor and crumble my cornbread in it.
Being from the South, this was so eye opening to see people have never tried our everyday food before
Omg yes! 😂😂 I was like hold on y’all don’t know what this is??
The people in the video are from California we don't eat soul food here we see it as unhealthy and i'm black
Black history through food on the React channel! I’m liking it!
Should be a bottle of hot sauce in the middle .
I’m a black southerner born & raised but I have never & will never eat chitterlings 🤢
absolutely
Our ancestors ate them to survive. They had no choice in the matter. So they taught themselves how to clean/sanitize them, season for flavor, and cook them.
They taste better than they smell but it’s definitely an acquired taste.
@@christinajones7696 I know that. Thank God I didn’t live during those times. That still doesn’t explain why people STILL eat them in 2024 🙄 idc how much you wash, clean, or sanitize or season them; I will never eat them unless it’s a life & death scenario 🤢
I have smelt them being cooked and that aroma still haunts me
Me either 😂
Yessss to the woman singing collard greens by schoolboy q ❤❤❤❤
Them not eating the greens or catfish with hot sauce irked my soul.
Lol and vinegar with the greens
The hot sauce was on the side for the catfish. But I do agree for the greens
Or some hot pepper sauce for those greens. Fish was just missing sliced bread lol.
My favorite way to eat grits is with butter, salt, pepper, cheese, chunks of ham and a fried egg on top!!
I’m from Michigan and my family never eat pumpkin pie. Always sweet potato.
They need some cornbread with those collard greens.
Jayse omg your hair so smooth your wife must love it
Idk personally them greens kinda look like they didn’t get cooked right😂and where’s the hot sauce?! Need it on the side for every southern dish😂
The lady with the hair picked up that lemon and squeezed it over the catfish asap!!! She not new to this 😂
If your chitlins have a smell after they're cooked. There's something wrong lol
I'm African American and I will not eat a chitin...never
Holy cow Jayce!! Miss the long hair, but damn short hair suits you!
True southerners do NOT put sugar in grits! That’s something northerners do.
Northerner here. No, we do not.
Speak for yourself
Na why don't lol
Grits ain’t cereal!!!!! No need for sugar. We southerners put cheese, butter, and shrimp in grits, but no sugar.
When he started crying I fell out 😂
Jayce looks so different with short hair looks great
I love how Sharone said our culture, that was appreciated. She didn’t separate the culture as most people would. I appreciate her thinking of it as all of our culture.
All of who's culture?
The sugar vs. no sugar on grits debate is like the pineapple vs. no pineapple on pizza debate...
Pineapple and Jalapeno on thin crust goes Fed
Sugar in Grits is for psychos
I really appreciate how respectful everyone was for the most part. Not only that but having an open mind and understanding the history behind the foods that we love so much. bravo 👏🏾💗
As a Southern Georgian I approve this! All this is what we eat in the South. 😮💨😮💨🖤🖤
Louisiana born and raised. Its a no on them okras. Not enough cornmeal. Them greens still had stems on em. Black eye peas do not have tomatoes in them. Idc how southern I am. I AINT FUCKIN WITH CHITLINS.
Seeing friut on grits made me uncomfortable lol
This was a fun group. Glad they were able to appreciate soul food. Very brave for trying the chitterlings.
YESSSSS CAUSE SUNY NO WAY!!! The texture doesn’t even go with sweet/fruit🤢
Exactly! Where is this coming from? Northerners that have moved to the South and they miss their Cream of Wheat? Seriously...
A cup of collard greens also has as much calcium as a cup of milk. I’m not a milk lover so I’d rather have the greens.
So this is what we're doing for black history month?! 😂😂😂
we eat catfish with hot sauce or mustard with a piece of bread in the south. not tartar sauce lol
Facts lol
Shout out to Sharon for pointing out the glossing over of our dark US history. I didn't know, as a northerner, what hush puppies are...as they aren't a staple here. I feel sick at the idea of casually throwing out my order for a side of "hush puppies" knowing the history of their origin. Damn.
Grits with salt and butter is also part of the debate. Louisiana girl out.✌🏽
Salt butter and peppper only !!!
Only…1000%
JAYCE CUT HIS HAIR!!?(looks good either way!)
DO A PART 2 WITH BOILED OKRA, PECAN PIE, SWEET POTATOES FRIED , DEEP FRIED CORN, PEPPER STEAK , SMOTHERED PORKCHOPS, OR MAKE A SOUTHERN BBQ EPISODE
they wouldn't be able to handle it
Sharon cleaning her plate is everything!!! 😅
I moved to England from Texas 30 years ago,and wanted to introduce my husband and his family to good southern cooking. I can’t tell you how my soul died when they tried the grits and decided to put jam on it! When I mentioned shrimp and grits, they actually said they didn’t know if jam would go with shrimp!! NO JAM AT ALL EVER!!!!
My family are from the deep south on the Florida Georgia line. They were sharecroppers. Look it up. If you don’t know what it is, I was raised with all this food. It is my absolute favorite. It tickles me when I see people try southern soul food and absolutely love it it’s what I was raised on. I love it. I share it when I looked up in Maryland. The people around me would beg me to bring different soul food things and yep I’m a white girl but I know how to cook! Today is my birthday, not looking for birthday wishes, but the one thing I asked my husband for was a catfish dinner with okra. Thank the Lord he came through. It was delicious. By the way, I true Southerners never put sugar in their grits ever.
Happy birthday 🎂
Happy Birthday soul sister 🤣
@@KrisFlicks thank you sweetheart so much you didn’t have to take the time out of your busy day to wish me happy birthday but I appreciate it. Thank you.
Being from the south ND raised on soul food I really loved watching thm try and enjoy everything.... ND the grits deba5 is true 😂.... wth tht being said... sugar don't go in grits 😂
They needed to serve some cornbread with those greens with some of that pot liquor , game changer 😂😂
On bro😭
Being from the south, I would love to take them into the deep south: parts of Texas, all of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and parts of Tennessee just so they can really taste the true Southern Soul food....mmmmm....along with a little bit of Cajun & creole food in there too.
Texas is not the deep south
