    Charlie is a proper little nerd. lol
    Though I think that Charlie is so focused on making everything "perfect" for Nick that he's not able to do his own work until Nick's last exam.

    The ace book is the library is a different one from the one Issac is reading in ep 1. In ep 1 he's reading ace of spades which is a thriller novel. The book in the library is an autobiography of an asexual person.

    I think Elle reacting so weirdly to the date being awkward is partly because she's also afraid they will mess up the friendship (the promise they made was made to be this big del for both of them after all) plus she'd been trying to get over him and distance himself when suddenly he's there with flowers asking to go on a date the same night. They're both in their heads about it because they've been stressing about it separately and haven't really had any time to process together what this shift in their relationship means to them both. Also they're teenagers and it's funny because we've gotten so used to how good Nick and Charlie are at communicating that Tao and Elle seem like a bit of a disaster in comparison 😃. Also! Tao asked Elle on the date the same day and then got upset at Elle inviting her friends to the party the same day, we don't even know if Elle had already invited them before Tao asked her out. Unfortunate situation all around.

      I think it's also in addition just literally what she said, he was acting like someone else. This whole season is about combatting the idea of 'perfect' and that people should be this 'perfect ideal' for each other (we see it in all the major couple's storylines to various levels). Tao is buying into that as well, putting on this persona and trying to deliver on an idealized version of a first date (and of himself), because he doesn't have the self-confidence in himself to realize that Being Himself is all he needs (as Isaac pointedly says at the start of the episode, he was way overthinking the whole thing [the implication being to just try and have a good time together as opposed to delivering some Perfect Dream Date]). Another character later on even remarks that the group should've realized it was going to go poorly as soon as they saw Tao not acting like himself. Heartstopper believes in loving people for who they are ("I love you because of how annoying you are" as an example from this episode even) and attempts to change to fit some 'ideal' will always fail or get in the way of true intimacy and connection.
      "But if we're going on a date we should do something we *both* enjoy" as Elle says. The subtext being "if we're going to be in a relationship, we both need to feel free to be ourselves together"

      Movie buff Tao has definitely watched one too many romcoms where the main characters live happily ever after once one of them gets a makeover and performs some sort of “grand gesture”

      Elle has some similar traits to Tao. In particular, she's afraid of change. You could see that several times in the first season, and she's reiterated bits of it in this one already.

    Hopefully everyone might have noticed a little in-joke made by the production team? The short moment between Charlie and Nick's mother, where Nick's mother says Nick caught a bit of sunstroke when out walking Nellie - this was done because Kit in real life is has very sensitive skin and gets sunburnt a lot. We have seen the photos from his time in Los Angeles, under the California sun.

    They were shooting this season when Kit was forced out. Elle spent the last year trying to live her authentic self and then Tao tries to change himself for her. I can see why she is upset at him. This season goes from PG to PG-13 for sure.

    I think I had a similar reaction to you about the Tao Elle date the first time I watched it but after watching the full season multiple times my opinion has shifted. Yes it might seem like Elle overreacted but you have to remember Tao wasn't the only one nervous about this date and the change in their relationship. A big reason Elle didn't even want to push the idea of a romantic relationship was because everything in her life changed after she transitioned and she didn't want anything else to change. And then immediately when the go on a date Tao seems to completely change. Not just physically, but also his personality. He was always the loud outspoken opinionated one out of the two of them, while Elle is more chill, and that worked well for their banter. But on the date he was quiet and reserved and awkward (doesn't help that the date was a movie obvs. Hard to have any conversation during that) but it was like all her fears were confirmed during that date. She thinks this is how Tao is going to be now if they're a couple. Is it completely logical? No, but they're kids. And I'm not saying it's Taos fault at all, I can just see Elle's perspective better after a rewatch.

    I’m not 100% sure, but I really think the scripts had been finalized and filming was either mostly completed or fully completed when Kit popped back onto Twitter to address the queerbaiting allegations. That would imply that this topic was a core part of the storyline prior to it ever being a PR issue, which would make sense, because it’s a recurring pressure for LGBT people to deal with and deserving of teachable moments. The whole debacle is so sad, and poignantly ironic, and I really hope that lots of people learned from the incident. I hope there was some real good to come out of it to offset the hurt and outrage. It’s been quite divisive in the Heartstopper fandom, and we are normally known for being lovely and positive, since that’s what we love about the show.

    • @brondo93
      @brondo93 Před rokem +2

      Yeah, the comic has always addressed the ideas of how/when to come out and inform people. So Alice would have written the script as following along with the same plot points. It was just a severely unfortunate coincidence that it happened in real life to Kit as well - I think Kit was also asked in pre-release interviews about it and he has commented on the show reflecting his own personal story

    Charlie isn't not doing his work because he is being wilful. He's not doing it because his executive function is compromised by his anxiety. About the only thing he can make himself do, so he doesn't feel utterly useless, is look after Nick. As someone who had similar issues at school, I can fully relate. This is why (amongst other reasons) I am not a fan of Jane: her approach just makes it *harder* for him to do what he needs to do by diminishing Charlie's agency. That's exacerbated by her lack of interest in Charlie as a person instead of a problem (we have never seen her be complimentary towards Charlie or Tori, let alone listen to them: see her one scene in season one). For that matter, the same is true of Mr Lange, whose first lines in the series showed how little he cares about his students.

      @bluebirdwindowsill-zg3kn Před rokem +1

      I agree. Charlie suddenly going from being at the top of his class (according to the comics at least) to slipping this badly should have prompted a more serious and supportive conversation to figure out what’s wrong. It’s definitely a sign of some deeper issues at play. Without spoiling anything - this storyline actually doesn’t happen in the comic - his behavior here will probably make more sense when the show digs more into Charlie’s mental health and what’s going on there.

      @@bluebirdwindowsill-zg3kn especially given what had happened the previous year. I'm not saying it is out of character or a 'plot hole' either, by any stretch. The characters are behaving exactly as they are set up to do so. Charlie's way of being isn't an accident after all.

    last season Elle said "sometimes change is a good thing". im mosty on Tao's side because he was obviously nervous and scared of loosing her! he said that AGAIN last season!! though i do understand if she was irritated that Tao was agnry that she wanted to hang out with her friends. she never said, at least on screen, that it was a continuation of the date.

  • @Mixxie67

    I agree a little bit about the manufactured drama. Let's face it, Tao is a constitutionally awkward human being. The first date was going to be awkward. He was eventually going to fall into character and trash the film at the end. Super dumb but nothing Elle hasn't encountered. I think the date was really last minute. It was kind of weird Elle asked the art school kids to the party but I get it also. Like, I feel like that new friendship moved weirdly fast especially if they don't live in the same town (which is likely). But I also get how people can click and it's, presumably Elle's first time meeting other trans kids. I dunno.
    I do feel like that friendship was added for conflict between Elle and Tao and you shouldn't be so aware of that in storytelling. I was disappointed in the episode for the Tao/Elle storyline but it was good seeing Nick being a bit more vulnerable.

  • @michaelklaus

    The date of Elle and Tao suddenly and weirdly reminds me of 2 (bad not cute) awkward movie theater dates I had... both with the same guy.
    After the first one I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. But for the second time I left a good friend's birthday party (that's a funny story of its own) to grab a bite with my date before the movie. He showed up 20 minutes late because he ate at home. I went to eat something anyways because we still had enough time. He tried to make me buy snacks and drinks... AGAIN. So that wasn't going anywhere. After the movie I had a story to tell and the birthday party was still going on.
    Odd that it didn't do this to me the 15 other times I must have rewatched season 2 by now.

    I think Elle overreacted and didn't really cut Tao any slack. Tao was really trying and it didn't feel like she was meeting him halfway at all. Like, they've held hands lots of times, but when Tao tries to hold her hand, she doesn't even move her hand in reaction.
    Nick's situation is so hard. He doesn't owe anyone any information about his sexuality. But Charlie can't live his full life with his relationship. Queer people can't really just live their life without coming out, at the very least making it perfectly clear that they're not straight. Which then leads everyone to ask about and expect a label.
