As a radio engineer I’d suggest the USB socket was removed because the USB charging circuit cannot handle charging the bigger battery. The original USB charging circuit is quite simple and is limited in its charging capacity. If you look at the PCB on the UV5R plus, the components for the USB charge circuit have not been fitted. It would also explain why the larger battery has the extra tab - to prevent people from fitting it to other UVK5 variations that have the USB charge socket installed. I wouldn’t recommend removing the tab and fitting the larger battery to the UVK5 models if you plan to charge it from the USB port.

Sorry to contradict you. Though your suggestion is valid, I use the higher capacity 2200 Mah battery with the UV5 R Quansheng, which has a USB charging socket, with no difficulties at all. That battery is sold as an extra often quoted as beingn"3800"

You know what would be absolutely incredible, is if they made a K7 that did the whole 18 MHz to 950 MHz and did AM mode on any frequency, and had DMR that it could scan and clone from any DMR frequency and allow DMR programming from the front panel just like the UV-r5 DMR version of the UV-r5
Having a tri band that does DMR and AM and has full range reception that does the CB band all through the upper 900 band would be incredible.

However I don't see a possible win situation doing that, as I would do it to listen in to CB band, but without AM or DSB having just FM isn't enough motivation to me. Which means I will buy another Quansheng to try an alternative fw (egzumer for example) and keep my first one with the original fw to make comparisons.

Of all the K5-type Quanshengs I like the UV-5R Plus design the most (even if it unashamedly copies the Baofeng). Not the fan that they dropped the USB-C charging though, but hey, at least it's partially offset by a bigger battery. Hope it will also get the custom firmware support in the future.

Thanks for taking the time to explain about the radios, I'm looking into getting one and wanted to know the differences between them and your video is the best comparison video I found yet. I like how you explained in detail about them and the battery options was a nice little bonus tip how you can file away that clip to make it fit the old style and it will work just fine, I guess the pin-out of the battery +/- polarity is the same and you may have already tested this before you shared the tip.

Who else wishes one of these companies would make a scanner ?
I remember the '90s and the cheapest VHF single band handheld was around 200 dollars
    A dual band was 350
And a tri band that did 2 meter 440 and 1.25 meter was close to 500 dollars
When I first saw these 35 dollar radios I had the same reaction as most, that for all these year these radios actually cost 20 dollars to build that they were charging $500 for
I have learned that the Uniden digital phase 2 scanners that have all 3 keys added to open the NXDN, MOTOROLA Turbo ( DMR ) and the Open Sky decode keys, that costs almost 1000 dollars actually costs about 50 dollars for them to make it.
I REALLY wish baofeng or one of these other companies or a completely new company name would come out with a face to digital scanner with at least the DMR and the Phase 1 & 2 digital simulcast systems for under 100 dollars.
Can you imagine how Earth shattering it would be to have a good digital scanner hit the market that was around 50 dollars ?
They would totally corner the market.
At the very least they could make a basic full band 18 MHz to 999 mhz DMR AM/FM/NFM/SNFM that does analog, DMR, CTCSS, DCS and cloning.
As I understand it, the DMR is very similar to the Phase 2 digital and the simulcast is just a little more programming.
The Phase 1 digital is easier than the DMR.
I know they could make it if they wanted to.
We should start writing letters to all these companies offering to put in advance orders for a crowd sourced funded scanner project.
Show them how many people want this.
If we can get 100,000 people who would be willing to pay 50 dollars in advance for a scanner that would come out 6nor 8 months later, we can make it happen.
The features that the Uniden has with the satellite style
    Signal Level
    and
    Quality
    Meters are really great
They are easy to add to the firmware and display on the screen but no one did it before Uniden, despite the feature being in every satellite FTA receiver, even the 20 dollar unnamed black boxes
I think we should have a new channel on CZcams devoted to this effort with a concept video describing what we would like
The must have, the really want, the please put in but we could do without if it is too hard or costs too much and the would be nice in the future
As we saw with the PSR-800 the capability of doing new signal decoding is possible with just new firmware adding the software to do the decoder.
And the charging of 100 dollars for each new update to the firmware is another area where a company like Baoefeng could corner the market by doing the free firmware and allowing people to make changes to their firmware and post the private made firmware for anyone who wants it.
I see a whole new era of scanning
So few people are willing to spend 700 dollars for a scanner that they won't be able to use the next time a new signal type comes out without paying 100 for the new firmware.
If there was a 100 dollar Chinese scanner that had all the features of the 900 dollar Uniden, or a 50 dollar scanner that could do DMR and phase 2 digital simulcast systems, there would be a landslide victory.
50 dollars is low enough that everyone who was interested in scanners even if they were not going to use it much, they would make the purchase.
Just like we have seen with these radios.
I have a dozen models of these 50 dollars and under.
And they could add features like a descriminator output jack, and logging and maybe even an SD card for logging the audio of the transmissions.
They could do paging, 2 tone paging and NOAA alerts, DTMF decode
And paging frequency logging of the tones, so you can tell what tones are used for each department.
So many cool things they could put in or some user could add to the firmware
They could have ( reserved ) spots in the menu, ( Reserved-1 ) 2,3,4, etc
    And ( User-1 ) 2,3,4 etc..
For users to add features to the firmware, like active audio tone decode and display and store log.
So you could go to User-1 and have that be Tones Log
    2 could be Tones Display
And under those on off options
So when you are on say 155.550 and they page a department it shows TONE A 313.0
and then the 2nd tone goes out and the display switches to TONE B
    and displays
    841.5
Or just have it show and stay on
    155.550
    NFM Analog
    A 313.0
    B 841.5
    Log List Record PLAY SET
    V V V V V
    soft keys
So many cool features could be used that would make it
They could have rail, air, marine , CB, all the service groups frequencies and bands available for scanning at the touch of a button.

Usb-c charging caused massive interference on my K5 in the 70cm band, made the radio unusable while charging. No interference when charging by cradle. Also, the S-meter hacked firmware messes up the air copy and causes a bunch of errors. All that said, I really like the feature set and scan priority functions of my K5. You said you didn't bother trying to flash a firmware on the UV-5R Plus. Well, I do, but it does not work w/ the firmware update tool that I got for the K5, which worked for my K5. I tried both the dumped 4.00.1 firmware or the modded firmware from piotr022, said "file not match" as an error after the update button is clicked. Since the same 4.00.1 firmware was dumped and available on the net, you could try to flash the same version back to the radio and see if it works for you. (I am betting that it won't.). And if it doesn't work for you, I suggest that you take off the reference to the custom firmware in your descrpition box (the link), so as not to mislead others into thinking that this radio can be flashed. So far I could not find any other utility (or version of it) that is available on Quansheng's website.

@@fittoat9261 I noticed the difference in weight as soon as I picked up my new K6, after using the K5 for a couple of months. It's basically the same radio, so I was wondering where the difference in weight came from. 😁 Maybe it's the speaker, because the K6 sound better to me.

Printer_encoded on K5, sbar_encoded on K6 or K5(8). Both work very well on either radio.
