  • This video, 'Christopher Hitchens on Islam and Muhammad', is a tribute to Christopher Hitchens, who died in December 2011, he's blatant honesty and strong rationality, in a great many ways, makes him kind of a hero to a great many Atheists and free thinkers.

      Well said. The religious hate this type of logic. And they also hate another factual statement atheists are forced to use:
      Anything claimed without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

      Hugh - Of course it's just the facts we like, right? Ever lie because you didn't like the truth coming out? Ever cheat because the alternative was too expensive? Yes, facts are pesky things. Your one of those people, the self-proclaimed 'enlightened ones' who cleverly tear down one lie to replace it with their own. Who are you fooling? Religion holds a thousand lies, including this latest version - the myth of the modern god-Man. Your egocentric self is merely co-opting rational thought to justify a life of self indulgent suicide - which is fine, help yourself - just stop with the moral and intellectual superiority claims... it's embarrassing for you and insulting to our intelligence.

    • @hughjorgan7211
      @hughjorgan7211 Před 7 lety +1

      Shadowdawg....I'm trying to understand your central point. Do you believe in a god? If so, please be specific on which one. Thanks.

    • @shadowdawg04
      @shadowdawg04 Před 7 lety

      Rationalism and facts stand alone, whether one believes in a god or not. But when we choose to make them mutually exclusive in order to justify ourselves and our behavior, we do a disservice to the quest for truth through logic and reason.
      It isn't just the facts that we like that are important, or those facts around which we may comfortably recline. Falsehoods considered and advanced, by any person, for any reason, however well the intention or motive - is reprehensible and intellectually (and eventually in every way practically) dishonest.
      Any road of rational and logical thought built upon personal likes or hatreds, is not the road to any sort of truth. For that is a contradictory impossibility.

    • @hughjorgan7211
      @hughjorgan7211 Před 7 lety +1

      Um, I'll take that as a no... you don't believe in a god. The god delusion is one of the worst falsehoods advanced on our species. Rational thinking and facts indeed lead to truth. For example, it's fact/truth that none of the hundreds of different of gods our species has worshiped has proven to be real. Therefore, it's irrational for some to claim otherwise.

      God says:
      And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge.
      & says:
      But those who wrong follow their [own] desires without knowledge. Then who can guide one whom Allah has sent astray? And for them there are no helpers.
      & says:
      We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.
      &
      And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve."
      &
      And those who disbelieve say, "Do not listen to this Qur'an and speak noisily during [the recitation of] it that perhaps you will overcome."
      &
      Say, "Have you considered: if the Qur'an is from Allah and you disbelieved in it, who would be more astray than one who is in extreme dissension?"
      .&
      Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging,
      Wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.

    I like Christopher Hitchens, even though I believe in Christianity. I appreciate that he approaches everything from a calm and logical perspective, and that he's able to communicate and defend his points well. It gives one a lot to think about from a practical perspective, which i think a lot of people who practice religion seem to forget about fairly frequently.

    • @lizgraham7004
      @lizgraham7004 Před 7 lety +1

      Actually, there are many things in faith that are backed up by history, science, and rational logic. Otherwise, I wouldn't still believe in Christianity. But I can honestly say that I've tested my faith thoroughly for over a decade with research from a practical standpoint, and listened with consideration to other perspectives. Unfortunately, most American Christians don't do that, which is why they come across as being spoon-fed sheep who cherry-pick their beliefs and spout whatever furthers their own personal agenda. However, it is foolish to say that logic and belief cannot coexist, because those who practice science (for example) construct their beliefs/theories on the foundation of logic (which can also be right/wrong, as in the world was thought to be flat at one point.) Also, people have every day beliefs based on logic as well. If someone doesn't know how to swim, they're not going to dive into a lake, because they *believe* (or have faith) that they will drown, even though they have never tried or experienced it for themselves. It is logic that founds that belief.

    • @paulj6662
      @paulj6662 Před 7 lety +2

      You are precisely wrong about history science and logic backing up your faith.
      It does not. It cannot because it is rubbish. Faith is constantly reassuring yourself you didn`t make a stupid mistake, when you gave in and said you believed this bollocks. It is terrorism, it demands belief and obedience; and threatens us with real and imaginary torment. But the vilest man can be redeemed while those he murdered can go to hell. Vicarious redemption is nonsense, immoral and insane.AND FICTION.
      I walked away from Christianity over forty years ago and now I marvel at how I deceived myself into thinking just as you still do. it is called confirmation bias, or cognitive dissonance.
      How much nonsense and lies can you tollerate in the REVEALED Description of the god you believe is the one and only true..
      bla bla made up bullshit Your god is made entirely of lies and fear.

    • @lizgraham7004
      @lizgraham7004 Před 7 lety +1

      Actually, history, science, and logic do have some contribution factors towards my faith. If you would like a historical/psychological perspective from the mind of a former atheist, i would recommend More Than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell, and if you are willing to get into a scientific discussion about Charles Darwin and the origins of the earth and universe as we know it, i will be happy to oblige. It seems like you had a bad experience around 40 years ago, and I'm sorry for your experience. I can see why you think the way that you do, but after the thorough research I've conducted on my own faith as well as other sources, i would have to say that i still believe that my faith is well-founded. Although, as i mentioned in my first comment, i appreciate and respect men like Christopher Hitchens very much. I like listening to what he and others have to say according to their beliefs, because it usually gives me something to chew on.

      I already said that I'm willing to have a conversation. I admire Christopher Hitchen's ability to defend his points in a calm and logical manner. If you're able and willing to research and talk about these points that I've already laid out, then we can talk. If you are unable or unwilling to do so, then I'm afraid to inform you that you're not very convincing. When most people resort to strong emotions in debate, it usually means that they are incapable of expressing and defending their own ideas based on logic and reason alone. I ask you again, would you be willing to read the historical/psychology-based account "More Than A Carpenter" by Josh McDowell, a former Atheist? And are you willing to discuss the origins of the earth and universe as we know it in addition to Charles Darwin and his scientific theories in comparison to the laws of nature and physics? If not, there is nothing you can say that will dissuade me from my beliefs.

      DAVID LOCKWOOD true enough, back then, a holocaust of hindus, something that was worse than the largest killer of the 20th century, mao, who killed as many as 60million chinese, and note mao and hitler, and others, had modern methods, and in hitlers case an industry of extermination, the muslims who killed millions over centuries were often killing in the most personal, brutal way, their fellow human beings. no wonder so many muslims, in this age, seek to find a better life in the west, or rebel against their dictators/pseudo-democracies in the middle east.
      the sadest thing is, the religious fascists then use revolution to hijack public concerns, as in egypt when they depose the president, the botherhood step in to say they are the revolution, the same often true elsewhere, and indeed in syria, where there were those who were not religiously based who battle the syian army, they are now seemingly absorbed by IS

He saved a woman from being stoned, he condemned the "law of an eye for an eye". OK, as someone who speaks multiple languages, this "you have to read it in the original language" argument is nonsense. There is certainly a layer stripped off in translation. Things like rhyme, meter, and idioms to a certain extent (although you can certainly explain idioms in footnotes) are lost in translation. The fundamental meaning of the words is not lost though. Even if there is some clever turn of phrase or word play, a skilled translator can explain, or at least approximate it.
    We have millions of books translated into thousands of languages across the world. People from all different civilizations across time have read, understood, and discussed them, but suddenly when it comes to the Canon, it's totally unintelligible. Nonsense.
    Scholars have been reading and discussing ancient Greek philosophy for thousands of years. Subject matter far more complicated than the garbage in the Quran, and no one seems to make the same claims about this material.

    It is always interesting looking at religions with the sharp edge of logic. However, the value of religions is more in their social impact... and they are in many ways just part of a people's overall understanding of how to live together with each other. If you ignore the interactions of various groups of humans with other groups, how things work within cultures can be quite interesting (including the small influence religion usually has in such things).

    Osho talks on Koran:
    Mohammed was an absolutely illiterate man, and the Koran, in which his sayings are collected, is ninety-nine percent rubbish. You can just open the book anywhere and read it, and you will be convinced of what I am saying. I am not saying on a certain page - anywhere. You just open the book accidentally, read the page and you will be convinced of what I am saying.
    Whatsoever one percent truth there is here and there in the Koran is not Mohammed's. It is just ordinary, ancient wisdom that uneducated people collect easily - more easily than the educated people, because educated people have far better sources of information - books, libraries, universities, scholars. The uneducated, simply by hearing the old people, collect a few words of wisdom here and there. And those words are significant, because for thousands of years they have been tested and found somehow true. So it is the wisdom of the ages that is scattered here and there; otherwise, it is the most ordinary book possible in the world.
    Muslims have been asking me, "Why don't you speak on the Koran? You have spoken on The Bible, on the Gita, this and that." I could not say to them that it is all rubbish; I simply went on postponing. Even just before I went into silence, a Muslim scholar sent the latest English version of the Koran, praying me to speak on it. But now I have to say that it is all rubbish, that is why I have not spoken on it - because why unnecessarily waste time?

    3:58 This is why I was always uncomfortable about Hitchen's books never having citations... Wycliffe died of a stroke in Church when he was in his sixties lol he wasn't burned alive... Hitchens was a really thought-provoking guy but goddamn his writings are too sloppy with the facts, especially when you consider the extremely powerful claims he is trying to argue.
    Fun to listen to but be careful, no self-respecting historian would fuck up a fact like that lol.

      Beppe Sapone This is the problem with fanboys...
      We all appreciate what Hitchens brought to the intellectual world, and that certainly includes myself. However, he is too loose with facts for so many of his books to be without reference, especially when one considers how unique his arguments are - ironically, one has to have faith in his credibility alone when accepting what he puts forward in his writings. But, that said, one must first know the facts before they can identify mistakes and I assume that youre fresh off of a google search on the subject lol but like I said, anyone who actually knows their history wouldn't fuck up a fact like that.
      And furthermore, if you had any appreciation for history at all, you wouldn't try and refute those who pointed out huge fuck-ups on that scale, no matter how often you've masturbated to his voice lol.

      @EastAsianCinemaHistory Před 10 lety +3

      I don't consider that to be sloppy writing, but sloppy research. His writing was almost perfect.
      However, I noticed the same problem, which is why he should have referenced his citations (even if it was just to make sure it was clear). I can imagine he was half out of his face with scotch when he wrote this.
      Most of his references are usually quite solid though.

      Also Hitch didn't claim Wycliffe was burned alive, he said people like Wycliffe, Coverdale, Tyndale (meaning people in their position at that time were threatened).
      All three were threatened with live burnings at some point for attempting early translations. Tyndale was actually strangled to death, then burned after.
      But ... he should have made this more clear by saying something like "were at risk of being buried alive"

      Open and honest discussions are thee only way forward.

    Love Susanyana's comments re Hitchens being a saint. He is certainly a hero. Why are there so few heros like him. I miss the joy of listening to his great and thoughtful mind at work.

      Do not lie and take your churchmen habits for a generality on all other people. Do not take your own sick mind phantasms as other peoples deeds. Mohammad lead his people to convert the two thirds of the planet while you are a microbe who will join all other microbes in hell. Christopher Hitchens was a Zionist lying dog who is burning in Hell with anyone who barked with him against the only true religion, Al Islam the religion of Allah. Any other Zionist dog barking or not shall have the same dwelling hell.

    The sooner humanity ditches religion in its entirety, a better and safer world we will all live in. And if there is a God or a superior force, as yet beyond our understanding, he/ it certainly bears no resemblance whatsoever, to the God portrayed in any of the ancient so-called holy books.

    I'll settle for 'as well as'
    Actually that is one of my working hypotheses - what we write often says more about ourselves than the other.
    It may also do you well to relisten to Hitchens and perhaps wonder how his words describes himself more than that which he criticises.

    and, to continue, how was he support of an "Islamist regime"?
    and more importantly how does that detract from the points in this video, which are from the audio book God Is Not Great?

    As far as "reformation" goes. There are actually countless sects of Islam with their different reinterpretations of things. And countries where Arabic isn't understood - they typically have their own interpretation as well as merging of religion and local culture into some form that is usually identified as being religious (except that few people are interested in reading the original Islamic texts or their translations, so they just follow the local interpretation - much like in many Christian traditions)

      secular Muslims in the Balkans are worth noting, as is Sufism as a reflective religion based on a more open philosophical islam, friends of mine in the past who are muslim were not known to be muslim due to them not holding to all the rules and not being fundamental in their world view, there are many other examples in the world, yet sadly the news media and middle east tyrannies are focused on very conservative versions of Islam

    indeed, but it should be realised by the faithful that they can't present only the good side of religious faith as the whole story. I think balance and understand is far wiser than ignorance

    Nobody venerates Hitchens, nor did he ever ask to be venerated. He is simply a logical, morally-consistent, and (let's face it) highly entertaining voice against the caprices of organized religion.

    agreed, to stop a child from doing something but not truly saying why it is not a good idea is no way to teach.
    if it come to faith and the impact thereof we should not impose a repression, but instead encourage knowledge.
    I say educate the people, and with the resulting rationality we may create a better society for humanity as a whole, maybe even religion can survive in such a world, although by thought it would be stripped of danger

    he read his own book God is not great, books are bound to be more long winded than the more direct punches in a cut and thrust of a debate, patience and the accumulation of data is far more valuable than the minor dagger blows that scuff the ropes of the holier than thou.
