Many Chinese Indonesians can't speak Mandarin but they can speak Chinese dialects, such as Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, Teochew..for hokkien the Hokkien dialects that we usually use r the Quanzhou, Xiamen and Zhangzhou Hokkien dialects
Hokkien people are widely distributed in Indonesia, Hakka people mostly r found on the island of Kalimantan,Teochew people too....Cantonese people are the same as Hokkien people, the majority in indonesia are Hokkien people
But for today's younger generation, many of our parents send us to schools that have Mandarin language subjects so that we can speak Mandarin, but many of us are lazy/not serious when learning Mandarin..our level is not as fluent as Chinese Malaysia and Singapore..but children who go to three language schools usually have a high level of Mandarin, for example three language schools (Indonesian, English, Mandarin) in Indonesia there are Xinzhong school, Tzuchi school, Khayming school, sinar harapan school, mitra harapan school etc..and the majority of all international schools in Indonesia have Mandarin subjects..the average Chinese indonesian goes to private schools / international schools, rarely go to public schools
My own school is not a 3 language school, i went to a private school in Indonesia which had Mandarin subjects..examples of private schools in Indonesia that have Mandarin subjects include..Cita Hati School, Penabur, Gloria, Ciputra, bina bangsa, sevilla, binus, highscope, pahoa school, cikal etc
If public schools have Mandarin subjects, they are usually public schools in the provinces of West Kalimantan and the island of Sumatra
The biggest factor why people rarely speak Mandarin fluently is because Chinese indonesian rarely use Mandarin in our daily lives/we rarely use it. We use regional languages in Indonesia, for example Chinese indonesian who live in Central/East Java province communicate with people in this area/everyday language we use Javanese, even the Indonesian accent uses a Javanese accent, so you can guess where you come from from the Indonesian accent in the main family we use the Chinese dialect, if you are from a Hokkien family you only use Hokkien with other Hokkien people, if you speak Hokkien with Hakka people you will definitely not understand each other..use Indonesian to communicate with fellow Indonesians/chinese indonesians who live in different regions, and at school, English at school(widely used cs it is an international language)
So that's why we rarely use Mandarin even though we're learning, it's rarely used so it's easy to forget, it's not honed

When I was in China (I stayed in Northern part) I also always ate Southern Chinese foods or went to Hui muslims restaurants. Not Sichuan, but further south such as Macau restaurant, Hong Kong restaurant, etc. Because the foods taste so much like Indonesian foods. So I knew you guys will also enjoy Indonesian foods, since both of you are from Yunnan. I also tried soy beef fried rice in Southern Chinese restaurant and that was really good. When eid al-adha, my chinese muslim friend cooked me beef fried rice and that was one of the best meal I’ve ever had. The hard thing about foods in China were to make sure they did not contained pork, or lard, or liquor 啤酒 while cooking. I am glad you guys enjoy your time in Indonesia. Wish you a very blessed eid mubarak 🙏

in terms of number, indonesia has more chinese population than malaysia, but bcs indonesia is so vast, and has way more population than malaysia, by percentage the chinese people in indonesia seems so small.. not to mention most of chinese indonesia also rather choose to speak bahasa indonesia in daily basis than the chinese languages, and they also use their indonesia names for their id card.. that's why most of chinese indonesia rarely speak fluent chinese, not bcs they didn't love their ancestors, is just bcs they more familiar with bahasa indonesia since their born.. and unlike malaysia that has multiple languages to choose as the basic language at the school, indonesia only has one which is bahasa indonesia, that also the major reason...

most Chinese Malaysians not rlly can speak Malaysian..they speak to fellow Chinese malaysian using Mandarin..my Chinese Malaysian n Singaporean friends r like that..If you meet Chinese Singaporeans who have studied at international schools since childhood, their Mandarin is not rlly good, not as good as Chinese Malaysian cs they prefer to use English..In Singapore there is Singlish, usually a mix of English with Hokkien/English with Mandarin....
i usually ask Chinese Malaysian friends to help improve my Mandarin

Every city in Indonesia have their own taste and culture. Start from the western part, Sumatra Island, Aceh called as the terrace of Mecca, the Islamic culture is very strong there. And they have their own nasi goreng, called nasi goreng aceh. Another city like Padang, Palembang. And in Java Island popular city like Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan. Not to mention another island like Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, and Papua have totally different taste and culture from the western part. If you can, explore them all and you will see the diverse of Indonesia. 😊
