  • In this video we visit a private railway in Lancashire, UK, the Littledale Light Railway for the only day they open the gardens and railway to the public in order to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The railway is situated in beautifully established gardens and is amazing piece of engineering. The open garden and railway managed to raise over £3000 over the day from entry and train rides.
    The owner provided some further information on the railway, he wrote: "The railway construction was started in 1997 and took about four years to complete a very basic circuit. It has then taken around twenty years to get it like it is today. The route has been modified several times, each time extending its length to about a 1/3 of a mile. A station was built with an overall canopy in 2018 and a signal box followed in 2019. The viaduct over the pond was constructed during covid in 2021. The gauge is 71/4" which is a standard throughout the country allowing for visiting engines.
    We have two engines and a tram which was built for my wife and grandchildren to drive. The steam engine Tarn Beck was built by a friend of mine in 2007 and weighs around a ton. The electric loco Vale of Lune which looks like a diesel was finished in 2022 and also weighs about a ton. The rolling stock comprises of 12 wagons, a guards van and four coaches. Everything was built here in our own workshop's apart from the steam engine which was built in Wales. My friend also built a sister locomotive to Tarn Beck called Afon Glaslyn which can be seen running on the railway."

    I hav followed the building and operation of this line since the day I was walking the dog along Moorside road, and into Littledale road, when I saw a few feet of track being laid - after a few walks, I finally saw Mike out working on the track and had a long chat about his plans for the line - which were ambitious to say the least. However, some 20 years on, Mike has fulfilled his dream - or has he? I moved away from the village, and miss his open days - I attended quite a few of them. The garden and railway are quite outstanding - the earthworks after the tunnel are quite amazing and took a lot of work and material.

    I'm now suffering from garden railway envy, a fabulous construction and beautiful Garden. Knowing how much work it takes to keep my own small efforts running this is a great achievement from the owner and a real kindness to open it up to the public.

      Hi Simon, me too, and I don't have a railway in my garden. It's an amazing piece of civil engineering when you see how it fits in the landscape on the side of sloping garden. The owner is a really nice chap, and without a doubt well worth a visit on any future open days. All the best, Matt 👍

    It’s nice to see the two river class locomotives Afon Glaslyn and Tarn Beck, I saw them when they visited the Scottish Model Engineering Trust (SMET) for the 7.25” Gauge AGM in 2019 I think it was. Beautiful engines very powerful and comfortable seats for the driver! I got to sit at the controls of Afon Glaslyn

      Hi Mark, Yeah its great to see them together again, I first saw them at Leyland SME at the 7 1/4" agm in 2009, which is where I feel in love with love and from that moment I wanted to build my own 7 1/4" loco!! So the rivers are the reason I'm building a loco! All the best, Matt 👍

      Hi Chris, This video is only the tip of the iceberg to how amazing the place is, to be able to visit and see how incredible it is was an honour, no video can do it true justice. All the best, Matt 👍

    Thanks for sharing 👍 Are thise engines gas or propane fired?

    • @julias-shed
      @julias-shed Před měsícem +1

      They both have coal in the compartment behind the driver. Propane isn’t used much for passenger hauling in the UK 😀

      @MattChiversWorkshop  Před měsícem +1

      Hi Craig, nope they are coal fired, although the media will make you believe we are going carbon zero….. we are still helping the trees grow by burning coal 😉. All the best, Matt. 👍
