  • How to Access Files on Your Synology NAS via Windows File Explorer
The Synology NAS has a special configuration to allow browsing from your Windows network that is turned off by default. I'll show you how to configure you're NAS drive to enable the NAS storage to be visible in windows file explorer that might be missing. This works in Windows 11 and Windows 10 and any other operating system like MacOS, Linux.

    This video helped, thanks.
Its also worth checking (using DSM 7.1.x) that if you are using WS-Disovery via SMB, that.. its Min. SMB 2.
SMB Settings > Advanced > the Minimum SMB is higher then 1 as Windows 11 no long supports SMB 1.

Thanks so much. This saved me heaps of angst. Very clear and complete. I only needed to get about halfway through - just to get to the part about where to find the 'create network drive' option in W11.

I have mine set up just like this anyway.
Side note on the newer version of DSM (7.0) the SMB, AFP and NFS have separate tabs and the WS-Discovery is at the bottom of the SMB tab.
Just encase someone watching this is looking for it. Otherwise its very similar.

Absolutely great tutorial. Your instructions were clear and easy to use. I have tried following a few other tutorials for this and all of them left instructions and examples out leading you to guess what information was needed.

Maybe you guys have the non working comp set up to use the home network as public internet instead of private. Or maybe your windows workgroup name doesn’t match or something. Or you might need to enable smb service on those computers. Just some guesses

Could you do something about self-hosting your password manager on your NAS?

    Hello
Thank you for the great video!
Can you kindly confirm one thing. I have a Synology DS214play.
I have installed Synology using a RAID 1 configuration
and the file format was ext4.
Your video mentions that once the Synology drive is connected files
can simply be transferred from PC to Synology NAS.
Now the Windows PC files on my computer drive are formatted as NTFS.
I am confused about whether the file formats on Synology NAS and my PC are
compatible or if I need to format my RAID or other disks disks differently?
Or does copying files only work with an external USB drive formatted as NTFS?
    Regards

When you are setting the permissions for the shared folders, you have 'Britec' showing. On my permissions list of users, my new (Windows 11) laptop does not show in that list, only my old Windows 10 laptop. I think this might be why I cannot map my Diskstation DS213+ to my Windows 11 laptop. How do you get a new Windows 11 laptop to be recognised by DSM?

  • @haseeburrahmanhidayathulla1601

Mr.Britec I have a doubt. Can you clear me the doubt?
My doubt is how can we copy files from a computer to a computer opened by remote desktop?
Or else how can we copy files from a computer to another computer opened by azure portal by remote desktop?

I can only log in from Windows 10 using a browser. I get the login dialog but it always fails. Login from Mac works as expected. DS918+ DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 6. WS-Discovery is enabled.

Hi, I've Mapped my NAS before just like you've shown here, but everytime I drag and drop files, transfer rate will drop to zero then File Explorer basically freezed, together with my internet connection. (NAS is connected to router via ethernet cable, PC is on WiFi)
Transfer is fine if done via DSM (7.0)
Any chance you can help please?
    Thanks!

When i click on network i can acces my Qnap and my Synology nas directly with all the maps on it.
Why do you want to make a virtual drive letter for just one map?

File structure, if you have a certain folder within 4 or five levels deep of hierarchies mapping is the way to go.

not sure what a nas is ??? sounds like some sort of backup box? I have 3 drives in my computer 1 with the os and a bit of my most used files
another that stores the rest and yet another as a backup drive ............. also I have a 2 gig usb backup disk.
All are accessible all the time ..............why need this complicated stuff ??

    • @Britec09
      @Britec09  Před 2 lety +1

Its more than a backup device. You have no redundancy if one drive fails and loads of other things you can do with a NAS. Look it up.

Why you can't just open the Synology in Network and read/write files to it, LIKE I CAN WITH MY QNAP, beggars belief. Great video, though, helped a lot.
