Light in the darkness | Swedish Lucia Tradition

- In the very darkest time of the year, we honor the light.
December 13 is a very special day here in Sweden when we celebrate the Lucia tradition.
And for many years now, I have made it my own tradition to go out in the night to light up hundreds of candles with the intention to bring prayers of light and love our world.
It's always a very special and magical feeling, even if this night turned into a snow storm (will show you some behind the scenes in the next video haha)
The song that I'm singing is my own version of the traditional Lucia song.
You can find the Swedish lyrics and a English translation down below (or in the subtitles).
I hope you will like the song and the video. It's made with love to all of you ♥
Thank you so much for watching!

►LUCIA SONG LYRICS - SWEDISH
Natten går tunga fjät runt gård och stuva.
Kring jord som sol'n förlät, skuggorna ruva.
Drömmar med vingesus under oss sia,
tänd dina vita ljus, Sankta Lucia.
Trollsejd och mörkermakt ljust du betvingar,
signade lågors vakt skydd åt oss bringar.
Drömmar med vingesus, under oss sia,
tänd dina vita ljus, Sankta Lucia.
Stjärnor som leda oss, vägen att finna,
bli dina klara bloss, fagra prästinna.
//Drömmar med vingesus, under oss sia,
tänd dina vita ljus, Sankta Lucia.//
► LYRICS OF THE LUCIA SONG - ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Night walks with a heavy step
Round yard and house,
As the sun departs from earth,
Shadows are brooding.
Dreams of wings rustling over us in prophesy,
Light your white candles, Saint Lucia.
Spells and dark powers, with light you subject.
Guard of the blessed flames, protection for us brings.
Dreams of wings rustling over us in prophesy,
Light your white candles, Saint Lucia.
Stars that lead us, the way to find,
become your clear flares, fair priestess.
Dreams of wings rustling over us in prophesy,
Light your white candles, Saint Lucia. - Hudba

You have no idea what this video has done for me. I’m half Swedish, and this video has helped me feel more connected to my Swedish heritage then I ever have before. Tack så mycket!
I'm from America... but my ancestors were Swedish... seeing traditions like Santa Lucia, and listening to this kind of music really makes me want to connect more with my ancestry. This video was absolutely beautiful and captivating!
How beautiful ❤️

I'm from Iran and I've never been in sweden. I don't understand swedish language but the music and your voice are mesmerizing. Listening to this song makes me feel peaceful. Thank you Jonna🌸 I love your videos
When she sings, I feel like I’m being lured in by a siren.
This is just what a siren would do, but dont be fooled, in sweden it could be näcken.
thats because she is a skogsrå. Beautiful but dangerous! She will eat your soul.

This is so beautiful. I have been in the Lucia procession for Lion's Clubs, schools, churches, retirement homes and nursing homes in California and Utah. My mother is from Sweden and taught us the traditions. They are so sacred to me now.
Thats it, I'm moving to Sweden and becoming her neighbour.
Lol
I already had it in mind, but for Norway... Living in the extreme north of Norway

My Grandma is Swedish and taught me about Saint Lucia when I was very young. Every year around Christmas time I dress up in a white gown with a wreath of candles on my head to deliver pastries to my grandparents in bed. This video makes my day :)

Dont forget to tell your kids about the tradition, and keep it alive! This is one of our most beautiful winter-traditions i sweden.
@@eigokanis8099 It is about midwinter. When the earlier calendar ended, midwinter had moved to te 13th. So the Lucia celebrations were about how things would now become brighter. Lucia is not a big tradition today compared to with only a generation ago. But, so it is about the winter solstice
OMG. I needed this healing music! It was my saddest point of my life when i found this just pop up on my dashboard! I recently lost my baby twin brother RIP Randy! I miss you and love you so much. It's been so hard for me but i know I will see you again in heaven one day!

We always did this as children. Can't believe they let us have actual fire on our heads lol. And we'd walk behind each other in line all with candles in our hands. It's an actual miracle nobody's hair caught fire :O
My hair actually got a lot of wax in it while i got to walk first as Lucia in my school
Guess this time of the year in Swedem would be a blast for haircare product manufacturers . I wouldn't be surprised to see an ad represent the issue .

Minnesota, USA has a large Scandinavian footprint. There is a town a grew up by called Scandia that has a very old one room church from over 100 years ago that celebrates Santa Lucia Day every year. You get there at 4 AM and light candles, sing in Swedish, then have a Swedish breakfast.

@Rohnny99 I'm not sure, but it is always possible!
@Rohnny99 It is always cooler when people hold onto their original languages. My grandfathers on both sides did not pass on their languages. which is a bummer.
Varje år kommer jag tillbaka under Lucia tiden och ser på denna video flera gånger. Så bra gjord och utmärkt sjungande!
Me too!! Greetings from Italy!!😃
No matter what time of the year this song will always calm my soul.
The Lucia tradition is the wisest wintertime tradition I know of. It’s what everyone needs during the dark and cold time of year.
Problem is that you have to sing, but nearly everyone has the flu at that time, so everyone’s voices are messed up or non existant. Love the tradition though, but it’s usually just the worst timing to arrange singing in my experience.
I'm learning from Jonna that Swedish traditions are wise in general as they are mostly related to nature and social gatherings.
@@ELonaBrahimllariLucia was a real person though, and we learn the history about her together with the celebration/tradition December 13th. The red ribbon around our waists when we have the white gown is meant to symbolize her blood from the execution. And since it collides once with the solstice, it now is a festival of light.
@@ELonaBrahimllari this celebration is not related to nature. It's a Christian one.
@@Beaah Yes of course it is, what I meant is that in this case it's purely related to nature as well. This is what religion should be about, nature and humanity. A reminder of how life should be about valuing each other and our home, nature with everything that's providing for us.

I swear in a past life I lived in Sweden or Norway . It sounds like nostalgia yet I can’t place it.
Something similar here. As I listening to this, somehow I feel homesick, and it's very strange.
Because many people have the genetics from the winkings and native people.
Im danish and we all are strongly connected to the nature from the time when we were native people and had to live of and follow the seasons of the nature, in order to survive.
We have the same tradition with Lucia light celebration the shortest day of the year. Almost....the traditions are a little mixed. Here Im refering to the shortest day of the year, which in Denmark is the 21. December, but we celebrate Lucia day the 11. December.

Same here. I'm in the USA as well. This brought a tear to my eyes when I heard it. I feel so proud of my people and our lands. Protect this at any cost and our culture. Our identity is most important. SKAL
this is the most beautiful lucia song i have ever heard, it would really be an honor to listen to the songs you make on spotify or something :)
Ein fröhliches Santa Lucia Fest für alle! 🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️
I learned how to appreciate, love and enjoy dark days of winter with you and this video just made me more excited about that. Thanks for the song and video. You are amazing.
Thank you so much! ❤️
@@jonnajinton you are just like angles for us😊😇
So this will be on repeat FOR DAYS AND WEEKS TO COME!! Beyond gorgeous, dear Jonna!! 💗💗💗🙏🙏👏👏👏
Awww THANK YOU Allison!! ❤️❤️❤️
Going to my first Lucia celebration tonight. I'm very excited!
I am 1/4 Swedish on my mother's side. I've always had a special affinity to that. I love that part of my heritage!
Can't imagine why anyone would give this a thumbs down?? Its so beautiful, people are weird. Thank you Jonna from Canada.♡♡
Human envy knows no boundaries.
Everyone likes different things, and that's okay. Someone came across this video and it wasn't for them. We can still enjoy it all the same, without thinking everyone else has to.
I don't understand either. It was so peaceful and beautiful.
This is an ancient Tradition and Blessing, it is positively magical and beautiful. Some People just have to be negative and nasty. Envy is a vile destructive thing.
Or environmentalists concerned about fire burning down the forests
Being Italian, I'm amazed by the fact that we also celebrate the festivity of Saint Lucia here in italy (I mean, not everywhere, but in some regions of Italy they do), it's fascinating to see the common traditions between different countries :)
I’m Swedish and I remember being taught in school that St. Lucia was a Sicilian saint, that’s the legend our Swedish tradition is based upon. And one can actually read about her life on Wikipedia. :)
@Karyane M. huh? France dosent have anything to do with sweden unless ur talking about the normans
What is the festival about? What is Saint Lucia about?
@@leah6029 honestly most of us dont know and there are different Theories depending on who you ask
@@katarina9064 "France doesn't have anything to do with Sweden"?
No, the current "Dynasty" of kings are direct desendants of a French officer who became king of Sweden in the early 1800:s. "The house of Bernadotte".
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Bernadotte
And the king is the head of state in Sweden since we are a monarchy.
It’s nice to see European people keeping our ancient traditions alive, hopefully they are respected & are carried on for many years to come. Unfortunately this view isn’t shared by everyone which is a shame, without Europeans there is no Europe & it is ok to be proud of where we come from & it should not be used as a weapon to make European people feel bad for being proud of there heritage.
So true, unfortunately, those evil forces do not want anything that could possibly challenge their dominance and control over our society.
@@KingCatsTube Thanks G man Im glad to see there are people out there, who are brave enough to speak out & agree with me on these things. You are a true warrior ⚔️
Ya probobly
BRAVO, GREETINGS FROM SERBIA !!!
I've become interested in traditions like this espresially after learning about Walpurgisnacht
I don't understand Swedish but I really love your voice and videos. I really wanna live a life like you.. you are a frozen angel with soothing voice.. it's really mind blowing & amazing..
Love from India ❤️❤️
This is a beautiful way to show that light can show through the darkness. You are such an inspiration Jonna. Thank you for uploading this treasure ❤❄
I agree! 🌟
Being mostly an Irish girl, I see a lot of similarities with Celtic and Nordic music. Your videos are beautiful
Im welsh/scot and i agree ♡

I hope u know that u see the similarity in how she sings it cuz when we sing it in preschool and school it absolutely doesn’t sound like this lol
Well most irish have norse ancestry and our vikings created dublin For example
Absolutely
I was part of the Sancta Lucia pageant as a girl, in northern MN (USA) and I remember how the song went too. The words are so beautiful, and the story is too. I love your take on this, almost like Narnia or Tolkien, it’s hauntingly beautiful!! The wolves howling at the beginning just added this ancient and magical tone to it.
What a voice. What a melody. What an athmosphrere. What a holyness. Simply great and unbelievable. As a practising christian i have to constate: sacred. Thank you Nordic Folks !!!
Also here in Finland today is Santa Lucias day. Every year one young woman is elected to be Santa Lucia.
@A e s t h e t i c Hope he declined otherwise he would just humiliate himself.

She is beautiful... and i love that they picked a girl With dark hair.. the real lucia had dark hair...👍
@@rebecca3242 They should've picked blonde since it fits more with the winter solistice.
She began with ancestral ties. Find yours, begin your journey home.
edit: follow your heart, i dont think odin is racist. things have to be a little different, the ethnicity of our ancestors is different now. mixed people are a new ethnicity, and that's okay.
Guess I’m going to northern Western Europe then. Basically Viking, Irish and a little German. What about you?
@@jas6246 Scottish with Irish and Scandinavian
I'm on that path now........Norway is where I'm headed, to the fjords where my people lived and thrived and iceland. I feel so connected now, but I can hear my ancestors calling me back home. Im in the USA. But feel so out of place here.
When you are a mix and have no idea what to do. I am part Spanish, and HATE it. Want nothing to do with it. The other is Italian. Not that interested and all I can find is Witchcraft, but even then, thats secretive and only taught in Italy. Anything online is false from what I learned.
......where do I go..... I hate being mixed, I have no idea where I belong and I hate some parts of my heritage. I looked into Norse Heathenism but not many are welcoming to me because I am not Scandinavian.... It hurts so much when you are lost and long to be apart of something you are happy with and belong to.
Winter Heathen same here. I’m so mixed I don’t feel like I belong anywhere at all. My grandfather was from mainland Spain. My other grandfather was from the Canary Islands were I was also born, but he had moor heritage too. My grandmothers where English and French. The English one had Asian heritage. I feel like an outsider in my own country and wherever I go. It is the reason why I have always been attracted to countries with ancient, rich cultures. I seek what I lack.
I can hear this song a thousand of time : it always takes me out of the storm in my heart ! Thank you so much ! God blesse you, my dear soul in Sweden ! Love from Luxembourg !
Every year on the 13th of December, I click on and celebrate your video. Thank you so much for this one! Glad Lucia
Just celebrated Lucia yesterday in school here in Finland! Sung this in Finnish, but your version is the best i've ever heard

She said, “See, what I see” and we’re HERE for it. One of the most magical videos of a magical tradition ♥️🥹 I’m not Swedish, but a part of my soul is. Thank you for inspiring me to celebrate sankta Lucia day ☀️🥹on Dec 13th!!
I wish I could go back in time to when most people lived like this, outside the cities in small houses without electronics etc. I wish I could have the chance to see Sweden as it was before when the ceremonies, holidays and the culture still played a big role for everyone, if that's understandable. I live in Sweden, on the countryside but it's still not the same "Cozy" feeling as it is in old books, story's and movies. I would love to live like that for a week and be self-sufficient! Thank you for posting things like this, it makes me feel nostalgia even if I've never experienced something like this before
