  • In this Vostok Komandirskie review video, I review arguably the best Vostok Komandirskie watch out there, the Vostok Fifty Fathoms 030787. This features the Vostok 030 case, which looks a lot like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.

    I am Russian and back in the day I lived in the city called Chistopol, where Vostok watches were and are, to this day, being made. I remember my grandfather used to have one. The citizens pride themselves on it, given it is one of the biggest wristwatch manufacturers in Russia, whereas the city's population is only around 60.000. All watches are handmade, partly due to Soviet-era machinery. It is incredible to me that Ben reviews these watches along the likes of Casio, Seiko and so on. Vostok are good watches, yet I didn't think they would be popular outside the country. It simply goes to show that this guy is truly unbiased and is out here to provide the most value. And when it comes down to the bang for your buck, Vostok are virtually unbeatable. Thanks for trying to pronounce Russians Cyrillics and doing them justice. I especially like the way you say "Командирские". Great work)

The bezel does have no clicking function and is completely friction based. But don't worry. Some slight adjustemnts to the friction mechanism and the bezel does its job fairly well...

      Yeah but unfortunately its a very primitive bezel with no clicks that relies on a tension wire to keep it in place... You can align it by there's no gurantee that its going to stay in place for any length of time.

      They'd have harder times selling products though. As a matter of fact, the original Vostok went bankrupt due to low sells, so my guess is that successors will play it safe. I mean, they are kind of like Casio: all the praise comes from the bang for buck. I haven't seen any reviews of other russian watches yet.

I knew it was a good watch, but I had no idea how nice it really was. We ran a picture on a watch group and everybody went nuts over it. I had a price in mind, but I got ten times what I expected out if it. The money got us out of a hole and made life so much easier. It even got me a nice little retirement account to boot. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Vostok was bought by shareholders. In order to basically save the brand from collapse, they basically just cranked up the machines and started production again; and never stopped. They still use the old machines. When you buy a new Vostok, you're essentially buying a vintage watch

    I've had an old Amphibia for well over a decade now and she's still ticking happily away. I think this is where the phrase "Cheap as chips" originated for things other than chips of course. I've taken mine snorkeling on a few occasions and it has performed as intended, even when I took my PADI open water certification it survived with nary a drop of water detected inside the case (of course I was at a max depth of maybe 50ft. I had no idea they made a Blancpain homage, and will try and pick one up, as well as the "Life Aquatic" watch with Steve Zissou himself on the caseback, or I'll just buy the caseback and put it on a different Vostok. I like your review and have subscribed, I like automatic watches but can barely afford what they are asking for some models. My Citizen Promaster Automatic Diver is my most expensive watch at $299 Canadian when I purchased it several years ago and I liked it so much I bought the version with the very dark indigo blue dial which has become my daily wearer. Extremely cool.. Superbly engineered, and as an exercise in robust pragmatism the perfect manifestation of the best aspects in Russian design ethos. They make the perfect swimming watch. Tool, work of art, historical artifact and conversation starter. A Vostok wearer is not a believer in hype. A Vostok wearer is an engineering enthusiast and "doer" who believes in utter reliability and loyalty; who flies alone rather than in a flock, who questions assumptions...an original thinker. If I was giving someone a job interview and they are wearing a Vostok..thats another 10 points right there. A Vostok wearer knows how to answer the question "What do you think of Putin?", and the answer is "Here, have another vodka". They know that Vodka should be stored in the freezer, and that good Scotch should not be watered down. A Vostok wearer neither expects nor wants solutions on a plate. They are proactive and lateral thinkers. If McGyver was a Russian he would wear a Vostok. ( what does McGyver wear? a Timex maybe) anyhow, I digress. Your videos are EXCELLENT. Useful, fair-minded, perceptive, and technically smooth. Fly high. Fly strong. Cheers, and Na Zdorovie !

    £95 for a Komandirskie which in reality is a tarted up Amphibia was a bit steep imho, you can buy the better 710 Amphibia's for about £55 or the iconic "original" 090 "tonneau" auto for around the same. I have many Vostok's featured on my channel and beginning to get noticed as one of the UK's larger Soviet and Russian collectors. The thing is, Komandirskie is a field watch, it is the little brother to the Amphibia which is a certified 200m but has been tested to destruction at 800m, yes they do share common components but just a bit more effort goes into the Amphibia because it is bought with that serious expectation of 200m.
    BTW you can buy a classic Komandirskie for around 30 pounds, brand new with many a revived jaunty Soviet logo and they are superb get wet and muddy watches that last 10 years before needing any hint of a service.
    I recently built a "off the shelf parts" 090 "radio room" Amphibia on my channel because the brand is so modular and it cost about £50 for a unique 090 divers watch and am now working on building a 710 "ministry" (710's were the case types issued to Soviet divers by the Soviet MoD, Vostok revived the case because of its popularity, original ministry 710's are insanely rare) build utilising an original Zakas MO CCCP black dial which is about as close as the original MoD divers you can get, it will be full auto, gilded tension ring and a lume ceramic bezel on a 22mm heavy bracelet.
    It will also mean I have a Vostok from every decade, have two 1940's Boctok's, a 1950s Boctok, a 1960's Wostok, several 1970's "Commanders" and a lot of 80's, 90's and 00's Komandirskie and Amphibia, the 090 parts are 00's-10's, I even have a very rare 1979 Vostok embossed dial Olympic watch in a unique case.
    All Russian bezels are bi-directional, they use them differently to us westerners requiring both directions for timed ascensions and descents underwater. Poljot and Raketa also made Amphibians for the Soviet military, the Poljot ones are serious money for what is the king of the Soviet divers.
    Slava came close to a subbie design with their range of quartz pieces like the bullseye pepsi or the big red Soviet star quartz, going with a red markings on white dial and bezel and serious looking watches, the oddest of mine is the Chaika Stadium which is supposed to represent a grass stadium or playing ground but ended up looking like a green evil eye... check 'em out, these Soviet watches are crazy fun :)

      The 03 Series is in fact a step up from the amphibia range so the 95 asking price isn´t too steep imho. It´s just a bit weird that they have put them in the Komandirskie Range.
      Technically it´s an Amphibia but the have upped their game with better Dials and Hands, the Bezel is much nicer than most amphibia ones and they come on a quite good and usable solid steel Bracelet instead of the stamped junk we are used to getting with classic amphibias. I really think 20 Bucks more is well worth the higher quality you get with the new 03 series.

    My Komanderski has a green dial with a black sub-dial for seconds, star & chevron logo, and tastefully done crosshairs. Also, 12 & 24 hour scales, no day/date complication, very nice 3-6-9-12 numbers. Currently wearing an olive Maratec Nato. $80 delivered, from Soviet Marketplace.

    I have a Vostok Kommenderski, the bright yellow one.
    It's a bit rough around the edges so to say but I do like it. My neighbours wife is from russia and she was happy to one outside "Soviet military" as she put it.

    I bought a Komandirskie K65 with a white 24-hour dial a couple of weeks ago. I put it on a silicone strap, and it's been getting a lot of wrist time. It's only about 5-10 seconds fast each day, I'm not complaining.
    The finish of the steel is a basic matte finish, but well executed, it does not look cheap. It's appropriate for a military watch, this is not a dress watch. The watches quirks, the limited power reserve and the wobbly crown, have not been a problem so far.
    Some negatives: the K65 case has some sharp edges on the lugs. The white lume pips on this particular dial are about invisible, unless they're glowing. The hour markers for the odd hours sit between the minute markers and make the dial a bit busy and harder to figure out.

    It is pronounced "vostok" in Russian as well.) Some cyrillic letters look like latin ones, but mean different sounds. In case of the word "Vostok":
    В = V
    О = O
    C = S
    T = T
    О = O
    К = K

      The phonology is ever so slightly different. The Russian pronunciation is very close to what he says, but it's still the anglicised pronunciation.
      I think his solution was elegant and respectful to the original language, but especially in the case that the actual pronunciation was quite off (like pronouncing a very English R in komandirskie)

    • @GonkOrange
      @GonkOrange Před 4 lety +4

      In this word the first O is pronounced like "ah" because its unstressed (the stress is on the second syllable, which is pronounced like the exclamation "OH") So it should be something like "vah st OH k" (that's my terrible attempt at typing a phonetic pronunciation)

    I have Vostoks, and I have the Seiko SNZH. I love the Seiko, but...no screw-down crown, no hand-winding. It's a beautifully finished watch, more so than the Vostok, from what I can see. The Vostok, though, is still a very pretty watch, probably easier to live with, benefits from some of the design features of a true dive watch, and I'd happily wear one all day! Preferably on a nice vintage Bond Nato strap.

    This watch is a vostok amphibia with a komandierskie dial. The plexiglass domed expanding crystal, two piece caseback and the clutch between the crown and stem are all unique features of the amphibia with its 200m WR, while the komandierskie only has 50m WR, usually comes in cheap metal with chrome plating, none of those technologies and is usually cheaper.

    Heyo! I do own the Seiko Fifty Fathoms. It's very nice all around, but no screw down crown and rated at 100M. That said, I'd probably only wash my hands with it on. Regardless, it's finely crafted and the movement is well regarded. Even though it's more expensive than the Vostok, I think the Seiko looks a bit more charming and garners a more dressy vibe. Great video. Thanks!

      My grail of grails right now is a Sekonda branded chrono on the black dial and mint green markings and lume, I have several Poljots in lesser models with the same theme but I do love a Sekonda. One recent diamond in the rough was finding a fairly clean original Sturmanskie Gagarin, OK I had to spend £20ish to get a Sportivnie to replace the lost stem and keep for spares but the joy when I put the replacement stem in, wound it up and after a couple twirls it fired up keeping absolute spot on time... I paid £12 for it too... result :) It had lived in a drawer the last 20 years too...

    The acrylic crystal is an essential feature of its waterproofiness. It distorts under pressure in a predictable manner to more firmly seal against the case gasket, something a sapphire or mineral crystal wouldn’t do. All Vostok are Ice Cold.

    • @watchbreaker1706
      @watchbreaker1706 Před 4 lety

      @The Daily Beater There is no crystal gasket on Amphibian. Seal between steel and crystal is achieved by polishing contact surfaces. Crystal of Amphibian indeed expands in diameter when under pressure. Modern watches have nylon L-shape gasket and a crystal is pressed against gasket’s horizontal lip when water pressure increases.
