This must honestly be the best child performance ever.
Best child performance ever? That is a big ask. I am a huge, huge fan of Angelina, but acknowledge that she can't do classical performances justice. It's just a physiological thing. Most classical singers can't do R&B justice either. There are a number of child classical singers out there that in their own genre are comparable to Angelina in quality I think. But never the two shall meet, so comparisons are really difficult. Who knows, one day our Chameleon may just blow me away with a classical number, but I think it somewhat unlikely.
Naw. There’s other great ones too. There’s like a five year old singing opera on one of the talent shows that comes to mind.

Hello, Janet. This is the "wow" video. She is age 9. And that was Screaming Jay Hawkins. This is his original song fro 1956 and she based her arrangement on his recording more than his live performance. Yes, you read that correctly. Her arrangement. Those were her last minute notes to the lead. This is AFTER winning Norway's Got Talent (age 7/8). She auditioned for that with Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." Her a cappella second audition was Billie Holiday's "I'm A Fool To Want You." She started the voting part with "Bang Bang" and finished for the win with "Summertime" in the style of Ella Fitzgerald. She won with 46% of the vote and is Norway's gem. She has raised millions for charity, and there is a related story about why at age 6 she vowed to perform barefoot until all of the children in the world have shoes. She was singing at age 1.5. And now she is 16 yo and still singing. Your laughter is very appropriate because her stated dream is to sing for the whole world to make people happy. She made you and me both happy tonight. Your reaction mirrors that of many experienced musicians. First, there is almost a nervous laughter when Angelina comes out with that dark tone and sass. Laughter turns to disbelief and astonishment pretty quickly as you realize that this is not a novelty. This is nine year old Angelina-who takes her music very seriously-giving us absolutely authentic old school blues. She’s not showing off-she’s being true to the genre, and she is absolutely killing it. Angelina is running this show, completely synched up with that fabulous band, and her age is irrelevant.
I’ve never heard any singer who can inhabit so many genres perfectly-and she does it with her own completely unique takes. I think you’ve only heard four Angelina songs. There are dozens more, from age 7 to now at 16, that will convince you she is literally once in a lifetime.

I just watched one where they literally blurted out "what is happeniiiing???" as their brain broke. And there are so many of them that have to pause recording just to recover from the shock and compose their thoughts.

Angelina is a pure musical genius. She has such clear vision of what she wants when it comes to music.
We have been waiting a long time for you to see this one! Angelina has created many masterpieces over the years, but there is something extra special about this one. At barely 9 years old, she comes into the studio, jots some last minute notes for the band, and then just crushes this performance like a seasoned pro that has 40 years experience behind her. I see this video as a piece of music history. ...and I think in the years ahead (as Angelina becomes the legend she is destined to become) the whole world will recognize its importance.
This definitely belongs in the Jazz Hall of Fame next to Hawkins’ rendition, as an example of what he inspired more than half a century later, if for no other reason.

'The Confident Singer'. I guess this scored pretty high on your chart, eh? This black and white video (by choice to reflect the early 1950's) suggested to us that anything is possible! In the beginning of the video you saw the band's director being handed a sheet of paper. It had musical changes on it for the band which were written up by Angelina (who was 9 years old). Singing jazz like an accomplished pro backed by a wonderful jazz quartet, "What!?" Stunning! No, shocking! Remarkable! No, unbelievable! Great video! No, this is a masterpiece!
Janet, it is such a pleasure to watch and listen to you react to Angelina. I think you are aware that it would be a huge misstep to ignore her video's between the ages 7-10. Most of them (all of them?) are absolute treasures and everyone of them exhibits a poise and confidence some artists are never able to achieve. Janet, she is very humble but spectacular at the same time. She never 'shows off' and I always get the impression she is singing FOR US.

Angelina was born with total confidence in her ability to make a song better with her own arrangement and also to deliver it as she intended. She is a prodigy unlike any other.

She was just 9 here. I understand your reaction totally! Her singing and performing has often an emotional reaction on people. Angelina is an incredible story teller making you hear and feel the story. Combining two expressions, I like to say that she plays my heartstrings like a fiddle.
I find her confidence and her presentation very inspiring: if someone of 7 (first audition) or 9 can do it, well than I should be able to do so as well!

Great reaction! Angelina is an outstanding singer/songwriter who is rather close to jazz/blues and "revives" old songs. I would love to see her on stage with the slightly older Courtney Hadwin - equally talented, but more rock/blues in genre. Performing together, I think that would be a feast for all music lovers. It is a joy to watch Angelina grow into this young lady she is today. She has tested the waters with a variety of songs developing each time a new way to create a flow that works for her. She can make you laugh, cry, excited, inspired, vulnerable, dreamy and it's all with a beautiful sound that comes out of her mouth. To be able to do it since early age is what curiously baffles us as adults. I`ve always loved your reactions to our wonderous barefooted jazz-prinsess. I have seen Angelina have got to you fully, as you`ve "tried" to react and review her music and stage confidence. I simply love your videos, as I love and appriciate Angelina`s great work of art. Yes. that`s how I like to name her music. So thank you for this. I still turn to laughfter and tears as I watch this stunning video, which one guy some years ago managed to call "a decent version" of I Put A Spell On You. I find nothing decent about it. It`s nothing but amazing, impossible, wonderful, fantastic, - and even almost sceary how well it is done. By a 9 - NINE - year old. Even though she has been singing literally all of her young life. Mommy`s little video snippet is a great proof of that, as Angelina sings allong to Whitney Houston, at 18 months young. Even a big mic in her little hand.
What I would love to see next from you????? Perhaps that you take a good look at Angelina`s audition at the "NorwegianTalents" show in 2014. She was still 7 at the time. And then maybe pairing that video up with her very latest live-performancer of Whitney Huston`s "I Have Nothing", or maybe another one of her Billie Holiday covers, "All Of Me", from her consert in Norway at 10.th of july this summer. But as young as she is here - still highly recommend all 4 of her Norway Got Talent performances (Gloomy Sunday, I'm A Fool To Want You, Bang Bang & Summertime) - at ages 7-8. You asked how she does it? Hey Doug. The backstory on Jay Hawkins' (a trained opera singer) rendition of this song is fascinating. Apparently before the studio performance, the director went out and brought back fried chicken and beer (lots of beer), and there was also bourbon present (supposedly). The entire band got ripped, including Jay (who became known as "Screamin' Jay from this performance), and this is what they created. I don't know about the Jazz Hall of Fame, but the ranking in the Rock and Roll Top 500 by Rolling Stone is #313. Best wishes.

@@dojoswitzer Nina Simone's version is much closer to how Jay intended it. But even Jay admitted that the turn of events (drunk and improvising band and himself) brought the song and him much more attention and fame than if it had been done as scripted.

She was 9 years, two months old when performed. Today 7 and a half years later hundreds of people have marveled with CZcams responses. It is in my opinion the most amazing performance of a child in history and will continue to be so for many, many years to come.

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. Well perhaps this is what she does when she does play and we get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable!... Oh Lord... what is coming the world is not prepared for but we as fans have been on the edge of our seats and will remain there as we wait. No hurry. We want Angelina to do it her way when she is ready. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her.
We know Angelina will continue to amaze! We will be here to experience and cherish it for as long as we live.... and I am praying for many more years for myself to enjoy it till the end of my days... Excellent. I think any stage presence coach would lose their mind's and burst into laughter. Especially if they hadn't seen anything of her as a young one before that. Even at 7 and 8 on NGT, she wasn't quite this good, but something shockingly amazing about her understanding of music and storytelling, the emotional intelligence, was very very eerie and moving. You should try those, honestly any AJ you give us would be great, you're an absolute pleasure to watch and haven't done nearly enough of her 170 or so performances 😋
Every song she sings, she makes me feel as though she has lived them. The emotion and the feeling she emits is difficult to accept without thinking she has actually lived through the experience.
@@AJfanboy1 I agree, to me, a clear sign of emotional intelligence, she clearly picks up on emotions like few in this world, don't have to understand the exact message if you understand the exact emotion. Really in the case of an artists, it's even better.

In a previous Angelina experience, she made you forget to score her stage presence. Knowing you had done that before, you caught yourself midway through this one, but were still unable to keep score.
At the end, you were so overwhelmed that your comments were brief and emotional, as they should be with this one. I wish you could have taken a little more time to recover and provide some thoughtful comments in addition to your emotional response. To that end, I hope you would consider watching it again and recording a sequel to provide a more detailed breakdown.
That was my reaction the first time I saw this. She was 9 here listen to 2 very different covers age 10. My favourite IM HOLDING OUT FOR YOU. and HOW GREAT THOU ART which is N excersise in using her lowest rich register.

Don't worry about her stage presence. When she sings, you listen. Her voice absorbs you. She doesn't even need to get physical. But has she always been this good? Watch her very first public performance - auditioning for Norway's Got Talent with Gloomy Sunday at age 7. Or her first concert, singing What a Difference a Day Makes at age 8.
What a Difference is a must on any playlist of Angelina, was my go-to for introducing Angelina to anyone I could collar the summer of 2014!
Thank you for continuing your journey of discovering Angelina. She is well worth every microsecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on CZcams, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Yes, Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand
(g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
Janet, I lost count of how many times I've seen this video. Your reaction has to be my favorite. I laughed along with you, surprised at this little mighty 10-year girl with all that power! In the Video opening scene, Angelina writes a note with her arrangement suggestion to the Director, reading and smiling, acknowledging she could read music, earning her "The Boss" title from the orchestra. Janet, please check out Angelina's first time at age 6 in a Recording Studio singing "I Who Have Nothing," reading and singing in English; Norwegian is her native Language. To see her at one of her youngest performances check out "I Who Have Nothing". She is 6 years old, and in the recording studio for the first time. Turn on the CC so you can see the engineers comments at the end. One important thing to remember at six she is reading and singing in a second language not her native language. I don't know about you but I seem to remember that was the grade I was being taught to read in my native language. Great reaction you just saw Angelina in what is referred to as "Full Beast Mode"

It's the interpretation, a nine year old understanding an adult relationship situation and belting it out in song. Angelina's version is equal to the best and better than all other performances of this song, AT NINE!!!!
"Laughing with delite" is how i would characterize you. Agreed . And when you finally recaptured some composure (several times) and begin discussing some feature of her stage presence the camera displays eg her leaning into the mic, mouth fully open, her tongue extended forward in a configuration only a highly trained singer would ever use and which no-one would ever expect a nine-year-old to know about or have the confidence to use.
