Diesel engines are not about horse power, they're all about torque, torque and again torque.
My all time favorite was my 159 Alfa Romeo 1.9 16 Valve Diesel, the way the car drove, the seats, the interior and the Giurgiaro exterior, one word : magnificient !

Maybe not but there are a couple of noteworthy diesels that are also quite fast or tend towards sporty if you will. The 2.5 litre Mercedes 2011 (one installed in the c350 cdi with the V6 diesel). That car had a 5.8 sec 0 to 60 and top speed 155mph top speed ). BMW did a similar thing with their 535d (2016 model comes to mind). Great performance and really good fuel economy too I guess but that's an aside. BMW is sportier than the Mercedes but both are good examples of how a diesel could have sporting qualities.

Common rail was pioneered and designed by Fiat. Bosch made it available for mass production. The first car with common rail engine was the Alfa Romeo 156 from the Fiat Group. They still make some of the best diesel engines for road cars.

*I very rarely see the Rev Counter go over 2000rpm in my Mercedes (W247) 2019 AMG 8 Speed B200 CDi - This has absolutely amazed me, so so quiet, incredible range and over 35 mile journey (A6/A46) to Newark did nearly 90 mpg - hit traffic near end. Interesting I had a 1.9 Bora TDI and had problems. They started at 72k miles. First was blocked egr and the breakdown services could not identify the fault. Second was now I changed the belt at 80k however there was a non fatal slip at about 85k. The final straw was oil pump failing causing a catastrophic engine failure due to oil starvation. It's really put me off the brand. It was a long time ago my car was a 1999 car. But I know of others with very high mileage golfs. I guess I was unlucky but because the car was expensive and repair work was also very expensive I would be reluctant to buy a car with that engine.

I had a Peugeot with the HDi 136 engine attached to a six speed box and it was fantastic. It was a pity the rest if the car was not so great, severe corrosion issues from new (2004), with Peugeot and the dealer being useless to customers.
I currently own the Volvo D5 SUV (2011) and I like the way it pulls and sounds, and the vehicle in all is top notch IMO.
I did have a Mk1 Golf diesel 1.6 litre (none turbo), that was so slow I had to book a week in advance to overtake anyone.

I can vouch for the 1999 PSA 2.0 hdi 8 valve 109hp. Incredible durability. After running it in about 9000 miles i remapped it to 128hp... Then drove it 504,000 miles in 17 years. Thats over 800,000 km. Engine was inspected at 500,000km and looked in great condition so i kept the car, i was aimming for 1 million km then put it in a museum. Driveshaft failed in the end and left me stranded 1000 km from home. Replacement was going to take 3 working days to arrive plus a weekend and 1 day to instal it. Leaving me stuck for 6 days. So i had to scrap the car and fly back home.

Have a i30 with the d4FB engine, 145k miles and had little to no issues. Only small issue has been a slight gas leak from the EGR gasket, and a small oil weep from the valve cover gasket. Not the most exciting engine, but perfect for motorway miles and cheap to maintain and service. The Hyundai service intervals are 20k miles, which I've ignored and changed the oil roughly every 7k between garage services.

Seems in contrast to my country. Once India made pick-up truck TATA brand used Mercedes diesel engine and marketed it in Thailand. They have many engine problems compared to all Japanese brands. Finally, it closed down. The Korean KIA and Hyundai also use old model Mercedes diesel engines on their luxury commuters.
Mostly they ends up , engine heated and broke ,on their trip , steep road mountaineer in Thailand while other Japan brands are used daily there.
