  • Andy and Jane play The One We Found, a horror game in which you explore a spooky abandoned asylum plagued by violent former patients and apparently the actual sound of true fear. Can they escape the asylum? How do you pick up a melon? What the hell is The Membrane, and why can't you use weapons in it? Watch and discover the answers maybe in this Xbox One gameplay.
The One We Found is out now on Xbox One and PC.

Sooo I looked up the "sound of true fear" because what a gloriously absurd concept and it's apparently really a thing? It's a 19hz frequency, and since human hearing starts at 20hz we can't hear it but we do perceive the vibrations, which confuses the hell out of our brain. Ain't that neat!

Science time! There is actually a sound of primordial fear. But it's a sort of infra-sound; low frequency noise just below the threshold of human hearing. You can't hear it with your ears, but you can sort of detect the vibrations through other methods, so your body is subconsciously aware of it. It's been tied to feelings of fear, unease, distress, and is believed to play a role in the perception of ghost hauntings and the like. It's also a frequency lions make, so its presumed to have its roots as a partially-developed method of detecting predators in cave-man days.
    Yay, science!

I was mildly surprised to search Victor Tandy & discover that the “sound of fear” is a real thing (though I didn’t see any indication he called it that). I was much less surprised to do a little additional searching and see that most consumer speakers can’t reproduce sounds in that range. For the obvious-when-you-think-about-it reason that there’s no need for ordinary speakers to be capable of playing sounds outside the range of human hearing (especially if those sounds tend to trigger panic attacks).
