Algerian Army Stopped My Journey

Join me in the second episode of my Algerian adventure! I woke up in a car wreck yard where the generous owner, Hamza, let me camp, offering wifi, access to a toilet, and clean water. He even took me to the city and insisted on paying for our restaurant meal. Switching my navigation app from Komoot to Mapy.cz, I planned a route to Algiers that used rural and dirt roads. After spending most of the afternoon climbing a mountain with insanely steep inclines, I encountered a military area where the guards stopped me from continuing on my route. Forced to reroute and with sunset approaching, I found a perfect spot to camp in a farming field overlooking a beautiful valley. It was a night of wonderful views and tranquil sleep.

The road you were heading to was closed a long time ago, and opened 6 months ago, but if you find yourself in a similar situation, tell them that you are heading to the capital, are adventurous and love the mountainous roads to get there.

That’s what I did. I was there 40 minutes but only filmed a few mins. They said only people with a special authorisation can continue. I simply documented that my route was going through that access restricted area, the soldiers stopped me and told me to go back and reroute. I followed their instructions, I did not complain nor made a fuss about it.

You are right, everyone who passes has a permit, and they all live in that area, but army personnel monitor and protect the area because it was suffering in the 1990s from the presence of armed individuals, and despite their elimination, the army is still protecting it.
There are still places in front of you with beautiful, adventurous views, then Arib, then Ben Allal, then Miliana, then Ain Turki, then Boumedfa, then Afron, then Al-Hatatba, then Al-kolea, then Zeralda, then the capital.

I'm happy to see foreigners visiting our country, and I am delighted to see Davide here in Algeria! Davide embarked on a long journey across the planet. On August 13, 2015, he started cycling in Alaska heading to Patagonia crossing the entire length of the Americas. He then cycled across Africa from Cape Town in South Africa to Cairo in Egypt. Then he racked the north most point and the south most point of Europe. So far he visited more than 59 countries and pedaled over 87,000Km!
He had a lot of adventures and had dangerous and breathtaking moments like when he came face to face with a grizzly bear or when a black bear ripped his front panniers and trashed his tent or that other time that a truck reversed into him and many more adventures, despite all that he never stopped what he's doing due to his passion for cycling and traveling around the globe.
Thank you for adding Algeria to your list and for showing our beautiful country, culture, and nature, and showing to all the world how friendly the Algerian people are, it's true Algerian is a continent not just a country.
Thank you again Davide and welcome home 🚴‍♀❤

To clarify something, the map apps are not that accurate in Algeria so sometimes they lead you to some road while in reality it doesn't lead to your destination or it is a road but it leads to a military outpost. And the army basicaly told you the road doesn't lead to Algiers.

    Hi,
    It was a military zone.
Since the black decade, they were multiple military camp in various strategic point in algeria. You can find still now in high point or crossroad… it’s usual to find this military stop even in countryside. You can cross it without problem.
For the price, don’t forget to divide the price by 100.
    5000 is 50,00 dinar
