Damn, now I really want some smörgåstårta. A bit of a tip: we usually make the layers of bread alot thinner, that way the fillings soak through the bread and it gets really juicy and yummy!
+ddreamcatcher2 i agree..the one Ben made look so thick.
+ddreamcatcher2 This.
this looks like a typical american cake. thick and dry layers. thankfully the real deal is made with those thin layers😁
ddreamcatcher2 Yes, I was thinking the same 😊
Yea! And id make it with a lot of majo, lemon and caned tuna! :D
What?! I was expecting a cake that looked like a sandwich. This is totally amazing!
+How To Cake It Can you please do a collab with Sorted?
We only need to head your way for that... :D
Also I agree, if you ever get the chance you should do a collab with Sorted Food
Id like to see Yo and Barry converse. I think the world is waiting for that to happen at some point.
oh hi Yo, please please do a collab with the boys! :D you can make a fridge shaped cake with four little guys standing in front of it (or inside, really, your choice)
oh hi Yo, please please do a collab with the boys! :D you can make a fridge shaped cake with four little guys standing in front of it (or inside, really, your choice)
this is bizarre but I LOVE it
dodie! :D
No matter how you make it, it's delicious. Just remember to refrigerate it over night before decorating. And never forget the horseradish in the filling.
Im from Sweden and this is my absolute favorite food off all time. If you havent tried it you are missing something and as the lads say you can make it however you want it. In Sweden you can have it like a greek, Italian, American or pretty much whatever style you want.
My personal favorite is with shrimps, gooda cheese and ham amd it is fabulous.
"Shut up Ben" never gets old. 😂
I love smörgåstårta/sandwichcake, so freaking good. It has been said befor but it can be said again, the bread layers were to thick. They should be thinner so it really can soak up the yummy stuff from the filling. Also a tip, sandwichcakes are always tastier the day after they were made, because then the bread has had time to really suck up flavours from the filling. Most people do the cake the day before the day of eating it.
"next up we're going to make salmon chrysanthemums!!"
I *still* laugh at this! 😂
lifehack: use a hairdryer to get the chives on the sides of the cake, as well as all over the table.
I was looking for comments like "That's not how you do a real sandwich cake" but I could not find that many of those.
Two things I noticed though was first of all that the bread was cut pretty thick, wich is not usually how it's made(And the bread are traditionally just wheat bread).
Second thing is that(From *my* experience): The most common frosting is just whipped cream, or together with mayonnaise!
Cheers!
I second this! got really frustrated about the bread and noone mentioning it. Tbh its a good try to make a smörgåstårta, but its not quite there...
SMÖRGÅSTÅRTA!!! My favourite ❤️❤️❤️
A lot of Swedish people here saying this isn't very accurate or isn't even "how you do it"... honestly, it looks amazing. And I like this version as well. Why not? You guys take a recipe and make it your own, so go ahead! As a Swede, this looks gorgeous. THis kind of cake isn't my thing.. it's SO heavy with all the mayo and what not XD. But yes, in Sweden we use thinner bread and we top it off a lot with salmon, shrimp, egg, dill etc.
But love how you did it! Awsome job and I look forward to see more food as usual!
Ben, this cake has to much bred in it. thinner bred for more layers. And never had one with cream cheese, we usually use a mix of mayo and sourcream. At least that is how it is done in my family and the ones we buy in the supermarkets.
+Marcus Andersson THANK YOU! Those bread layers were much much too thick.
Also, gotta have that majonäs
Reacted to the thickness of the bread too. Feel like the flavours would be nice but it'd be far too dense.
No Ben, saunas are a finnish thing. We in Sweden do everything from the back of a moose.
Very nice idea. The possibilities are endless.
I've done smaller versions with bread slices and a 3 or 4 inch cutter but this is epic.
Watching Ben chop stuff is so satisfying... And I don't know why
+Nikkita Racha Such glorious precision
if you did this with bread slices and cut little circles. It would make perfect Cannapais or lunch party meals
Smörgåstårta :) At all cross generations family parties in Sweden! Awesome! 😍
As a Swede I say: MUCH too thick bread slices. More layers of goodness needed! Your decorations were quite on point though, but you should cover your cake much more - the glue of choice that sticks the good stuff onto the cake shouldn't be seen at all.
Also, everyone makes it their own style. My mum's got a dill chili shrimp/mayo layer, a ham/canned fruit layer, and a liver pate /relish layer. Garnish with shrimp, salmon, cucumber, tomatoes, salad and lemon slices. Many people use roast beef and peas - I think it's rather disgusting though.
To see James and Barry face to face like that... made my insides feel so nice. thank you two, for that arousing moment.
What a lövely gift to häve a Swedish recipe uplåded on my birthday! Seriously though, seeing food that is so standard and, to some degree, boring to me being cooked by "foreigners" with so much passion really shines a new light on it and lets me see everything that's unique and amazing about our cuisine. Please continue showcasing food from less "popular" countries, it's always an eye-opener!
I live in Sweden, and there's a loooot of different recipes for this, but this was a great one, good job guys! :)
I named some of my fish after Ben, Jamie, Barry, Mike, and James.
Somewhere, David Seymour wakes up in a cold sweat, visions of all that cream cheese in his head...
😂
Lol
Love that idea! I will definitely try that! Thanks!
I have never heard of a sandwich cake! you learn something new every day!
05:30 "lettus know"
puncity
+The Lettce PROGRAM no shit, captain fucking obvious
Good job! It looks amazing! I work part time at a bakery where Im not baking the bread but making sandwiches and these kinds of sandwich cakes to be sold in local supermarkets. You guys did a really fancy one! The ones we do have two kinds of fillings, one made with whipped cream, hard boiled eggs and caviar, and one made with mayo, ham, pickles and mustard. The garnishing is very simple; cucumbers all around the sides, then lettuce around the edges on top, wedges of eggs, rolls of cheese and ham, tomato wedges and then either shrimps or roast beaf, topped with cucumber and lemon. These are the standard ones but we also make a fancier one to a special shop and it looks more like the one you made! We use frozen dill or parsley to coat the sides as it actually sticks better than fresh one does.
There's something similar in Québec (Canada). It's called "Pain sandwich" (litterally Sandwich bread) and it's served during Christmas time. Usually, there's a layer of egg salad, one of ham salad and one of chicken salad. it's covered in cream cheese and decorated with vegetables.
Can u do more ultimate food battles
PlzZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
LIKE A ULTIMATE CUPCAKE BATTLE!!
Barry would win
We(the majority) here in Sweden love's sandwich cake, and I'm one of them 😍😍😍😍😍
+Maria Afram That did you draw that conclusion from? My personal experience is the opposite. Most people dislike them.
+justabit ... Sir/Miss.. I'm talking about my own experience. Of all the the people in Sweden i have met, almost 85% of 100% of them LOOOVES it. You might be the one that should think twice before you you judge about conclusions.
Have a good day, and God bless you.
@@mariaafram9281 Agree. It is delicious!
Gotta say it's awesome to see you made this, I had one at my graduation party here in Finland and it was amazing (I prefer the not-so-fishy kind though, with ham etc.)
The fillings sounded lovely, but a tip is to slice the bread thinner or it will be very dry, thinner slices will help the fillings make the bread juicer. Often you do a smörgåstårta the day or night before and then put it in the fridge so that the bread has a chance to get juicy (soggy sounds so negative). Best bit :)
Barry: CTW. James: CTOW. Guys, Comment Of The Week has been a thing for how long now? It's COTW.
Hot tip: make the filling and put it in the bread the day before you decorate and services it.
THANK YOU! I have been waiting sooo long for a swedish recipe!
Sandwichcake is one of my favorite things ever.
I wasn't looking for a new OTP, but damn it Barry and James.
The one you made would honestly be my perfect sandwich cake, I looooove smoked salmon and cream cheese
Love the idea of this, very interesting! Keep this kind of stuff coming guys!
I love this!! Thanks for the great video!!!! Amazing!!!
Do you know another great Swedish things the boys would love? Surströmming. Absolutely amazing stuff, grew up with it in the harsh north. Ben, you should absolutely feed it to them sometime. I'm not going to spoil the taste but on an unrelated note, it's been a while since the last revenge food video... Have any plans for one? Just asking. No reason.
(oh and make sure to not spill any on the floor, it'll take a few weeks to get the smell out.)
think barry would dissagree

Ben standing the cake like a baws. According to Swedish saying, Ben will get married. :)
"Managing to get the cake from the serving plate to the eating plate without dropping it or making it fall, shows one would make a good wife."
Now, where do I sign up to get Ben as my wife?
At first, I was not about this at all... But upon viewing, I think this is actually something I'll try. As a pescatarian, I can get on board! I would probably add lemon juice to the cream cheese bit, and replace the celery with chopped asparagus and artichoke hearts... Probably toast the bread before layering too.
i love sandwich cake, been waiting for you to make it!
Any more scenes like that with Barry and James, I'm going to write a fanfiction about them. (Hmm, what should their couple name be?)
Barmes.
Bames or jarry
+Hanna Mansford BarJa?
+Someone Special JaBar!
please write it on wattpad
As a Swede, I both love and hate Sandwichcake. A Sandwichcake can be amazing and delicious if done right - it can also be HORRID if done badly... I am not usually one to frown upon food but a bad sandwich cake is just so disgusting! Fortunately, you guys seem to have got it right! Just the right amount of combinated ingredients, beautuful bread and lovely toppings! Good job. This made my mouth water and I now really want Sandwichcake ^_^
In Argentina, a cake is called a torta. In Mexico, a sandwich is called a torta. (You can imagine the confusion.) This is perfect!
In Sweden a cake is called a tårta , so this in swedish is a smörgåstårta .
This is awesomely 🆒, thanks! I will make this for a side for a tea, or garden party!!
As a Swede I must say that this was a very unconventional take on the classic swedish party dish, much like their take on swedish meatballs back in 2012.
For all the non-Swedes: Sandwich cakes are still a massive thing here in Sweden, although not as popular as back in the days when every housewife did her own version. Still every bakery, restaurant and supermarket has their own take on the dish and there are lots of modern varieties, such as vegetarian, roastbeef, mediterranean and ham & cheese. My mother does a killer sandwish cake with tuna, eggs and lots of vegetables.
I've never heard of anyone using cream cheese. It's usually mayo or a mixture of mayo and sour cream.
There is also a hot, oven baked, version with egg and dill mayo, bacon sauce and with tomato and cheese on top.
I've eaten smörgåstårta with cream cheese but it was not nearly as much in that cake as in this cake.
I've also tried with cream, not good not good at all
+Erica Erixon Aha, interesting! How did it taste with cream cheese on?
Yeah, cream sounds a bit nasty. I know that some use a mixture of cream and mayo also, and that tastes alright since it's a very small amount of cream.
Cream cheese goes deliciously well with salmon. If you don't want to try it on a cake then I recommend you to try it in an other dish
It wasn't a small amount of cream :< the worst part was that it was all we had to eat that day
You should check out Regular Ordinary Swedish Mealtime's sandwich cake.
i always look forward to the next video because these are so funny and awesome, i love baking so you guys give me great ideas.
Loooooooove this!! I will be making the amazingly creative sandwich cake for the kids lunches! Awesome idea guys 👍
How do people not find their way out of IKEA? There's like maps every ten meters and freaking arrows on the floor leading you to the exit.
the bread-layers should be much thinner! its all about the filling
A cake with more filling? Sounds like a good idea to us! 👌
:D
Well I would say more layers but thinner bread
sure
And you could use like toast bread (sliced) cut off the crusts and then put three on a row a layer of prawns and mayo layer of bread etc
i had this today! Delicious!
I love it! I can't wait to make it!!!
Anyone watching from Australia every Sunday night? :D
I have made one using tuna, soooo delicious :-D It is a very normal "cake" to serve here in Denmark :-D yummy
It is? I've lived here all my life, and I can't remember ever seeing a sandwich cake...
Belethe Yes it is. I have eaten it like 10 times in Jutland :-)
+One Kitchen - A Thousand Ideas haha, the preview of your comment only showed until 'I've eaten it', so I thought: "This gotta be Jutland thing, it sounds so Jutlandish (Hvordan siger man jysk på engelsk?)
Belethe Haha :-D No idea! Let's stick to the "jutlandish"
Belethe Nej vi plejer at mikse creme fraiche og mayo sammen.. men det er også fordi det er lavet med tun. Her giver det god mening at bruge flødeost sammen med laks :-D
I worked with making sandwich cakes, they come in other flavours too. We used presliced white bread, remove the crust and then make the cake square by overlapping the bread with each layer . We used to make 3 layers and also store it over night to become most before we fully frosted it and decorated. Frosting we used cream cheese, mayo and some whipped cream. My favourite is Club sandwich and the full hog.
Oh, that looks delicious! Can't wait to try this!
You really got into the 70's dinner party theme, didn't you? ☺
Typical 70s in Sweden, meanwhile the rest of the world is still going: Sandwich cake? What do you mean?"
This seems like one of those weird recipes from the 50's that you don't think anyone actually ate.
Nope, Pinterest.
+Brittany Hudson Exactly, it's from Fanny Craddock recipe book. People in the 1970s ate this foul concotion.
Its acually the go to party food in sweden. Becoming less popular with newer generations bit its still a common thing.
I'm a music nerd, and I'm actually pretty happy you guys used "Gimme That Swing" by Cissie Redgwick during this video. Good on you. Keep up the awesome work, guys.
this is good for an afternoon tea thing...looks pretty yummy.
An "anything but seafood cake" would be my favorite. Lol in my opinion
hahaha just what I thought!
Bens slicing is oh so very straight looks more diagonal to me😂
I see many of my fellow swedes in the comment section dissing smörgåstårta. I for one love it!
This is wonderful!!
It is a bit weird but I'm definitely willing to try that, especially since there's shrimp and salmon in the mix ^_^
if you do make it please just make the bread thinner as in essence its just there to support the rest
When correcting Barry, James still managed to get it wrong... Comment The Of Week. Good one James, good one😅
WOW!!!! That looks unbelievable!!!!
that would fool me but how do you make a sandwich with out cold cut combo involved?
When I make this I make a cold cut and paté version :)
Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich cake!
I can't stand watching Ben throw things at the sides of cake anymore lol...if you cover the sides in icing and not the top of the cake, you can roll the sides of the cake in whatever you want and then do the icing on the top after!
This looks quite yummy! Well done.
Actually looks kind of amazing and really delicious!! Confused & amazed
There's a thing called sushi cake. I dare you guys to make it
Colab with Ro Pansino!!!
Miranda H they did
YES! Guys...ive looked on youtube for so long for a good smörgåstårta recipe. Thank you!
You should prolly keep looking.
i´ve never tried that combo in a smörgåstårta before but it looks realy delicious! it´s also realy good with a tuna mix in the layers and with smoked salmon and prawns on top of the smörgåstårta! Smörgåstårta is the best food ever!
5:26 "With all those options in the world , what would be your favorite sandwich cake ?"
"LETTUCE , NO!"
+elle smackk i love food puns :)
Let me know if any others Turnip
I'm swedish and I do not approve of this smörgåstårta. Way too much bread and not enough filling in a bread:filling ratio. :(
How do the Swedes handle that much cream cheese and mayonnaise? The “frosting” just looks so gross to me.
@@luigicadorna8644 I'd say it kinda depends on the type and amount of the filling you use. I think these guys were a bit more generous with the "frosting". And this isn't the way it's more typically presented, at least not in my experience. What I am used to have the top layer exposed, e.g. no bread and "frosting" on top as the Sorted guys are doing in this vid to make it look more like a "real" cake. 😁
@@luigicadorna8644 oh, i forgot, i don't remember if they got lemon in the video but that is something we serve with it to cut through the richness and it tastes good with shrimp and salmon etc! 😊
I love the way Ben says a Pinch of salt and then goes ahead and puts a handful in if you're going to use those kind of measurements at lest do it accurately, geez guys 😂
Why am I so late to know this amazing channel! Love it soooo much!
sushi cake?
You can use leverpastje layer (nordic liver paste), ham & mayo layer. Meatball and redbeet mayo layer.
Ibrahimovic is one of the best thing that came out of Sweden !
+Shog AL Mas no
no
The sarcastic "Yeah do" from Barry at the end of the video really sums him up :P
I usually do smörgåstårta to easter, you can do it with a lot of variations, but i always have creme fraiche, whipped cream and a little majonaise in the layers. It is nice to have some dill, salmon, shrimps in the filling. You can also have a meat-version with ham, liver paste, reindeersteake and so on. It is also nice to make it with only veggies, eggs and cheese.
I don't fancy the idea of meat or fish in this, but a vegetarian one would be great :D any ideas for fillings?
+straight quavers Roasted vegetables.
Masticated Cake oooh yeah :D
+straight quavers avacado, sourcream, red onion and some lemon in one of the layers and then the other layer you could do a hummus with chick peas, lemon, parsley, garlic and some salt and pepper. I think that would be amazing!
Ajla Sandström not so keen on avocado, but definitely the hummus :)
mushrooms and hazelnut layer, reed beets and vegan goat cheese layer , tofu and nori layer (for the seadfood layers), lima beens and apples.
My fave sandwitch cake would be a sweet one, with cream, fruit and chocolate
Hell yes! Usually you are supposed to leave the sandwich cake to rest, often over night. To rest the flavors and make it a bit "soggy", in a good way! Great recipe
Flowers and stuff. Wow, just wow.
4:40 to skip the fucking bullshit-talk with James.
+Corvus No you can't, if you do you'll miss James.
+Corvus can u people please stop this
+Corvus How dare you insult our beloved Scottish interlude!?! It just wouldn't be the same without it!
***** well toOoOoOoOo bad
They forgot Zlatan Ibrahimovic!
This looks like the most delicious thing ever. I must make this.
I want to try it now!!
Sweden beats every other country errday
Yeah the sauna cliché is finnish. Not swedish. Oy -.-
Well Finland was part of Sweden.....
Collision SC- 200 years ago!
Is there a full version of fridgecam intro music? I wanna download it as my alarm lol
A slow-mo video with a groovy bgm of James eating a cake or sandwich (YUM) ;)♡
