Thank you..... I'm also now in search of Phillip Wu (famous, but I've never heard of him). I enjoy hearing and seeing you come across my timeline, Harumo.
I love Harumo Imai ‘s style of music . I know this podcast is old and we are in 2024. But I have been watching her with TGJ and asked the group where Harumo is when they were here in Australia touring
Harumo is an excellent saxophonist.Such a wonderful sound and great technique, as wellas a very humble person. When she mentioned her Guardala studio mpc. I use the studio but not sure if the facings are different now my tip opening is a .115 which supposedly is equal to an 8 tip opening. My Guardala is also old from 1988. great interview . Thank you!
I love the music and play a little guitar but I really don't know the difference between the different types of saxophones. ... I envy people who can play well. they don't have to be the best but I like the creativity they all have.....Then when you combine beauty, humility and unbounded talent....I am in heaven listening to them!
Harumo is so young and yet so virtuosic. She's just amazing. I thought I heard influences of Brecker and Coltrane in her solos so it was interesting to hear her cite them as influences. She seems very humble and has such an endearing personality through this interview. Such a cool interview. #harumoimai
Thank you for watching the podcast. I plan to her on again in the near future. If you haven't subscribed be sure to do so, so you won't miss her next time.
Harumo is a tremendously good player. I have been watching her videos for a few months. It was great hearing her talk about how she started. Thank you for the interview.
Thank you for sharing your interview with Harumo. I've always enjoyed her playing with TGJ. Her solos are so musical and tasteful. Her interpretations of songs show she's well versed in her understanding of jazz, especially. Her understated manner is so typical of fine jazz artists. And she is certainly one of them. :)
I was led to this podcast after discovering Harumo just a week ago on CZcams playing with the equally talented Tokyo Groove Jyoshi. This is a wonderful interview of this amazing and lovely young talent. She mentioned Bob Berg whom I've admired for a long time, and I was impressed hearing that she's such a fan of the incredible and amazing Victor Wooten, another long-time hero of mine. Valuable insights into learning to play. Thank you Lance. Absolutely brilliant!
Very nice podcast! I really liked the relaxed atmosphere, the musical sequence - that was unexpected, and a good feeling - and I’ve discovered a new artist! I found the tone and the questioning to be respectful, engaging and just right from a Japanese manners standpoint. Thank you.
Thank you for your comments!! It was a truly pleasant time and I always enjoy listening to and watching Harumo play, she really knows how to express her soul while playing her sax.
Harumo Imai is as good as Kenney Garret, but she is not a Coltrane,...Coltrane like McCoy Tyner is a MASTER! Yes,...Harumo Imai is absolutely phenomenal 👍🏾
Tortuous! This young lady is straight down the line from Coltrane and Brecker and this guy thinks he's interviewing a high school stand out. "What kind of sax was your first one?" "So, why did you choose the tenor saxophone? Did you prefer that sound?" (Or something to that effect). Good God! Has he not heard her playing modally on some hard bop inspired funk? To her credit, she graciously rolled with this sleeper of an interview.
I appreciate your honesty Howard, and I'm sorry you didn't like the interview. You are welcome to write what you think would have made better questions, so if I ever have the opportunity to interview Harumo again, I can ask her. Thank you so much for your attention and participation.
Howard, Mr. Lee has given you such a fine reply, one which shows even further his appreciation of the culture where he lives, and in its quiet way, his respect and knowledge also of Harumo. I suspect you need to remember how young Harumo is, and that few artists of her strength, at any age, are able to hold the kind of analytic conversation you imagine. They, rather, do. Try an audio translation of her last remarks, which you can do with Google Voice on your phone. She several times recognized and thanked the opportunity, recognized her chance to learn to speak better in the situation, and hoped to the point of request to do it again. I am confident that some day, you'll be able to hear something towards your interest. I suspect the instrument will still do the best at the mysteries, and those you can hear already now. For anyone of patient interest, this interview has already done exceptionally well. That's a real depth and art, also to be appreciated. Underneath it all, it might be interesting and important for you to learn something of how faceted the culture of Japanese persons truly is. This has much to do with the experiences of persons in the music, I at least think...especially as it grows with the young.
One of world's best sax players AND she's beautiful
Why do I get goose bumps when she starts playing?
Nice interview. I have enjoyed her saxophone in the bands she's played in. Liked her work with TGJ and Juna Serita!
She's amazing!
She’s Grover Washington, Maceo Parker , Charlie Bird Parker,John Coltrane. The girl is bad!
This guys from Japan including Harumo deserve more recognition. Thanks a lot Lance!

Wow Harumo's English pronunciation is better than Juna's and she doesn't even live in the States! Keep it up girl you have a great voice too!
🎼 🎷 🎶 Harumo is going to equal the musical excellence of the saxophonist great like Coltrane, "Fathead" Newman, Adderley, Sanders, etc. 🎵
