To answer your question I would say alot of ammo is when you begin to worry about the stability of your flooring.
cinder blocks & lumber in the crawl space below work for me . even though they cost damn near as much as ammo .

Relatively new gun owner here. Hand gun in 9mm and AR15 in 223/556. At first I thought "1000 rounds is A LOT of ammo per caliber". Recently hit 1000 rounds of 223/556... and I'm having a hard time sleeping at night thinking how little ammo I have lol

I know a guy who bought a whole pallet of sealed cases of 7.62x54R back in the 90s. Its a lot of ammo when you need a fork lift to move the ammo.

@@ngb802 Something to consider is just what "ball ammo" is. Since you know the term I assume that you know the difference.This is for others reading this.
Ball ammo refers to full metal jacket ammo in this case(ball being a regular projectile rather than a tracer or incendiary for example). That sounds extra deadly and scary. In reality it is less lethal.Full metal jacket makes a nice little hole going in and doesn't flatten like a soft point would.In theory it would make an equally nice hole going out. This was a rule drawn from the Hague convention which predates the Geneva conventions.It outlawed "dum dum" bullets in international conflict.
Why am I giving a boring ass history lesson? Soft point "dum dum" bullets are only outlawed by treaty for use against armies. Under those same treaties it is perfectly acceptable for those same armies to use them domestically against their own civilians. Consider that when you are choosing ammo to store.
We use soft points and hollow points for hunting and personal defense because they are much more effective at causing tissue damage than full metal jacket ammo. In fact it is down right irresponsible to use jacketed ammo in those circumstances because it can pass right through the target and potentially into non targeted individuals.
Folks might want to consider the type of shooting they plan on doing.

I finally have 500+ for each of my calibers. Definitely not enough but I feel much better after hitting that milestone. Definitely want to add least triple that and then work on getting some higher quality and defense rounds.

There’s no set amount. Everyone’s situation and comfortability is different. Pick 3 of your main calibers and choose a select amount.

For 5.56 and 9mm for a non-competitive shooter, over 20,000 rounds for each caliber would be a lot of ammo.

I think its reasonable to assume you or I would be dead before we could dispatch even close to 20,000 rounds of 5.56 in a SHTF/WROL situation.
That's more then you'll need. When stuff hits the fan you won't be using your handgun as much, you'll be using your rifle if you have one. So I'd stock up on those rounds primarily.
Facts. Seals and others in SF said they only carried handguns cuz they had 2. And as the venerable Clint Smith said, "The only use for a pistol is to fight your way back to your rifle you should never have dropped". Or something to that effect 😄

3,000 rounds per weapon. Anything over is for practice, when available and affordable. Here lately I do a lot of dry fire practicing.
I find myself shooting now more than ever. Just something about the political climate which has me practicing a lot

I agree. I was having a similar discussion with another friend about how many primers should I have. He correctly pointed out that if you go to the range once a week and shoot 200 rounds, that is 10,400 rounds a year. Now, you're not going to shoot 200 rounds of most large rifle calibers in a week, but that is easy to do when practicing with a pistol. And you should be practicing with your guns routinely.
Some of those practice rounds should also include your self-defense loads too.

It’s never enough. My philosophy is, at a MINIMUM 3 mags for each handgun (I prefer 5 per), all mags loaded, enough ammo to refill all my mags, and range ammo on top of that. Typically, 1000 rds per caliber min is what I have, much more for calibers i shoot a lot,
Great video Andrew, I knew i had allot of ammo when i needed to pour a cement floor and build it it's own room. My contractor said it be cheaper to pour cement than to put 2x12s on a 4 inch center to hold the weight.
.22 will not be currency. Food will be currency. Youll need 9mm and 5.56 to defend your food. Don't think you will hunting with .22 either. Everything edible will be killed inside of a week. No. There's not much purpose in stockpiling .22 other than having a supply to shoot when the price/availability is high/low. Stockpiling non-perishable food will be a better choice.
.40 cal is legit....for me, its been pretty much the sme price since I started shooting about 10 yrs ago 13-17bucks per 50 depending on load etc. Been stacking that "unpopular" cal. for a while now
How about 60k of 22 and 7k of 223 6k of 9mm. Haven’t bought much since shortage. Got all of it before.

It really depends on the caliber. I only have 200 rounds of 375 Winchester and 375 HH Mag which is more than adequate for my needs. More common min of 2k but I don’t shoot as often as most do.

I had 500 rounds of 22LR, thought I was set 5 years ago, was I wrong!! Learned from that experience.
I'm gonna be Debbie Downer here. I agree and hope many people stockpile in case of rising ammo prices and taxes. But, I believe if SHTF, it wouldn't take long for there to be an excess of weapons and ammo. Because if you're using it then there are people that are either laying in your yard with their weapons and ammo or they are taking your weapons and ammo. Or no one is being shot and you didn't need it in the first place.
Or your extra freedom seeds and distribution units are well disbursed and hidden. I doubt we'll see any large unit combat in SHTF. It'll be small unit tactics and guerrilla fighting. Best not to engage unless you're forced to anyway. There won't be any trauma centers to save you in SHTF.

My wife and I have Sigs, 365XL, P238. I'm building up the supply, but right now 800- 9 and 450- 380 auto. In addition to the FMJs, we both have 25 rounds of HPs. Got another 100 shells for my no nonsense, trusty Remington 870 Express👍
2k rnds 5.56, 1k rnds 9mm, 4k rnds 22lr, 500 rnds 12 gauge.... that's the base "absolutely don't touch in case shtf" pile....buy more to target shoot and practice with as funds allow....rotate stock, but keep your base, whatever your base is.... Good topic, always interested to hear what others consider their base.

I would say base is a 5yr supply to get you through shortages & that being whatever for you is 5yrs of ammo when shooting normally & not during a shortage. I think it makes more sense for people who shoot often to stock up a certain timeframe worth of ammo and it makes more sense for people don't that shoot very often to stock up X amount of rounds per caliber.
That’s awesome. Prepare for ammunition as much as we can like 1000 rounds. Is there any 40 caliber and 45 caliber? I would spent time to buy 2 packs a month at a time. I hate wars, but we have to fight to protect ourselves, families, friends, good innocent individuals.
I don't know if this is considered alot, but I keep no less than 1,000 rounds per caliber. When I go to the range I buy ammo for that day and don't touch the others. Definitely gotta get more 22lr.
IMHO "A Lot of ammo" is when you have full metal (or plastic) ammo containers stacked from floor to ceiling in your garage and spare bedroom(s) and have replaced the insulation in your walls with ammo.

guess im doing something right, considering i vary the size of metal cans to configure for the house..... even reinforced all the 2x12's in the floor and stayed near perimeter first.
i had an issue few years back under obama, dented quite a few cans, broke a couple joists thats when you know youre in the stackers big leagues, that year i bought 2 50bmg's one bolt, one semi for $15,000 with 2k in ammunition.
For me 10K Rounds is a minimum for each caliber firearm that I own with the exception of big rifle calibers like 300 Win Mag which I consider 500 rounds to be adequate.

Good call Max. Yeah I agree nato rounds like 9mm and 5.56 7.5-10k and 500 rounds for precision rifles is good. Here's a shocker for me, one caliber I didn't have time to stock up on, my son got his first deer rifle just before covid hit. 30-30 Marlin. We both enjoy it as i cut my teeth as a youngster with one.. Perfect brush gun. Well since covid finding 30-30 ammo below $40- 50 bucks a box is like finding the holy grail. He's so bummed that he can't go and enjoy his rifle so I had to build him a AR but the boy still likes and prefers his 30-30.
@@robertpagel8951 You should look into the PSA KS47 rifle in 7.62x39 it actually has better ballistics than the 30-30 at 2500 fps and the ammo is still less than 40 cents per round.
Keep in mind the thing people overlook is barrel life of particular calibers... .300WM has a barrel life of about 1500. No need for 10k rounds and don't have spare barrel nor a gunsmith to change it out when it's shot out.
Idk about a lot of ammo, but I have around 2,000-10,000 rounds in various calibers, all different. Doesn’t hurts to build up your stash. Hardest part is balancing buying ammo and buying new guns. Right now I spend about 50/50 between guns and ammo. Didn’t used to be that way but ammo expensive.

You had me at "pallet" & lost me at "divide".
Another YTer made a similar post but he was looking at it from a practical approach. A soldier has a patrol rifle. 1 mag in the pew (30) and 6 Spare (180) rounds. So someone who is planning on a shoot out during war has 210 rifle rounds. How many engagements does the average homeowner or Prepper expect to get in, deplete their ammo and live to fight another day. Add in some rounds for hunting and a sidearm and well you get your magic number.
After the shortages and price gouging that occurred in 2021 & 2022 I won’t be caught empty handed again. I have enough for me , defense, hunting and training and just some more extra just in case. How much is that? Each to their own.
There are no such thing as “too much ammo” for those who trained at the range regularly. One of my range buddy bought a whole pallet of 100K 5.56 at a time.
As far as average guy, i would say 5k rounds in popular caliber is realistic. If you couldn’t afford it financially then at a minimum of 1k rounds.
My range trip avg about 250-300 rounds so even at 1K isn’t much.
Some time ago in a conversation with a retired marine captain he told me the best ratio is 2000 rounds per Rifle
That's my number. 2k per fighting rifle, 500 defensive handgun per handgun, 100 rounds per precision rifle, 500 per shotgun, 5000 per SAW.
I personally keep a minimum of 500-600 rounds of my Hand gun ammo( 9mm 45ACP) and at least 50-100 rounds of self defense ammo for those as well. For my rifles I keep 600-800 rounds for 556/223 and for 22 I keep 4000 rounds on hand at all times. I’d like to bump all my calibers to 1000 and 22 to 6000 but right not that’s all I can afford to keep on hand. Just got into reloading so I can get my ammo coast down and keep more on hand in the future.
Buy primers whenever you see them. Start stocking lead. You will never be sorry that you did.
For someone who has been Prepping for 40+ years, that has several firearms, I believe a minimum of 1000 rounds for each rifle minimum, 500 rounds for each shotgun and 500 rounds for each handgun/pistol. I also recommend a minimum of 21 magazines for each rifle and 12 magazines for each pistol. Add to that when you can afford to. My choices of calibers, not your wants or needs are 308, 556, 12GA, 9mm and 22lr. Be safe my friends.
It's nobody's business how much.but yeah,I would say.what ever amount you can load up when SHTF. you need to get a storage unit shared with someone you trust.put all your bugout bags off your main property

This genuinely makes me sad to hear. Here in good old South Africa, my (self defence section 13) license only allows me to have 200 rounds in my possession at any given time. Which is all I have, I promise 😉

Here's a little humor for all of you. Humor and kinda sad. My friend went to our local Academy sporting goods store a couple hours ago and picked up 4 boxes of 50 round 9mm federal ammunition for $17.99 a box. Because 4 boxes at a time is all they allow at one purchase. Anyway! Here's the humorous part of the story. When he went to check out the guy at the counter told him he could get more and a better deal on ammunition if he wanted by buying 4 of the 100 round boxes of federal for $38.99. My friend said he ask the guy why would he want to do that when it would cost him $3.00 more per 100 rounds. My friend said the guy told him no that he was getting a better deal on 100 rounds for only $38.99. My friend said he had to explain to the guy that no $17.99 ×2 was cheaper than $38.99 because it was only $35.98. My friend said there was several people standing around the counter and was looking at the guy like dam dude. Yes it's sad what our educational system has become. I told my friend that he shouldn't have embarrassed the guy like that. But then again maybe the guy wouldn't make a idiot out of himself again. Anyway my friend went back into the store and bought me 4 boxes of 50 for $17.99 a box. A different guy was checking.😂🤣

If everyone is storing .22lr for bartering, it won't be valuable. Hell, It isn't valuable now.

I would buy ammo when Shop. A little hear and a little there. It doesn’t create a hardship for me on my pension. I never slowed down and I have just almost the right amount for every gun I own. I also stocked a couple relatives up that needed a little help.
It’s as good as gold in my book, may be more valuable at some point. During the last year, it actually became a game to me to make my rounds. I live in the country so it’s a little drive for me. I’m lucky that a couple of Walmart’s kept it trickling in. I think my oldest ammo is close to 40 years old and still fresh and shoots just fine. It’s amazing what you can do when you don’t have a wife. I’m confident my two young grandsons will have enough too.
Just ordered my first 1000 round pack of 7.62x39. I feel a lot more comfortable knowing if anything happens I won’t be running to find ammo

You know what would be badass is if there was like a subscription service where every month they send you new ammo in a wide range of brands for your selected caliber so you could try alot of ammunition out that way. I just now got into shooting my very first handgun, a 5" Walther 9mm pdp. I had primarily only shot AR in the past and for awhile I was kind of overwhelmed with learning all the different and cool types of 556 and 223 but now I have over 1k rounds of my favorite sp ammunition for home defense and over 4k rounds in pretty much all over the board random ammunition.... Boy oh boy did I think 556 and 223 was vast.... It's insane how many different types of 9mm there is out there and since going to the range last week I'm down to only 100 9mm left. What's a good 9mm round & grain to stock up on for all purpose type scenarios? I've almost jumped on some semi-decent deals I've seen on random fmj rounds but what should I be strict with sticking to as far as price per round goes for practice / range vs. Price per round of home defense?
124grain jhp.... i prefer federal hst but i mean anything 124jhp, like privy partisan, or others..... will do pretty decent in 9mm.... as for 223 556, whats your barrel twist.... personally i like m855 and ss109, my favorite was lithuanian GGG but theyre impossible to find nowadays, i refuse to bust my stash open of them...
I never feel like I have enough but I'm with you, 4-5 k minimum for each self defense type (.556, 9mm etc). .22, .22 mag - innumerable. My deer rifles, not as much but the means to make plenty more should the need arise. Shotguns..... I need more buckshot! What is a lot? Just a little more.
I live on the second floor of my apartment and actually heard a crack last weekend after I placed another 2000 rounds in the corner of my closet that already has 20k of 9mm.
I had to put in a service request and been in a spare apartment until they can fix my floor.

I usually go to the range every Thursday. On Friday I go to my lgs and buy twice as much as I used the day before.
This summer I built wooden shelves in my garage that are approximately 8' high, 8' wide and 2' deep with the intention of allotting half the space for my wife's canning. There is no room for any canning and I would still buy more if I came across a good price.
I agree you have to have the most ammo of the caliber you carry and train with. There is always the stock in the other safe that you don't touch just in case.
I have a handful of ammo for each gun. I don't have many guns (by some standards).

I'm not even certain of the actual numbers. I kept a log of ammo purchases for a while, but decided that the paper was just something that I didn't want anyone else to find. Years ago, I thought that over a thousand rounds of one caliber was a HUGE stockpile. Heck, even three fifty-round boxes seemed like a lot. Then I took a class on how to shoot reasonably well...
This was great. I've halted gun purchases after the Zatava I just picked up. Revisiting my ammo and there are gains needed. I understand 2K + in 9, 556, 762 39, but was curious as to why you mentioned so much in 308? I'm guess AR 10 platform? My only 308 is a bolt, which I switched stocks on, so it accepts the 10 rd Pmags now, but I guess I always figured 500 or so would be solid. And it's an expensive rd. Anyway, great video.
I'm curious to know how much of y'all's stash is practice rounds vs defensive rounds? Are you just buying case after case of FMJ, or is there a certain percentage that's some form of hollow point?
After you've established your chosen carry round (hollow point etc.) functions reliably in your weapon through perhaps a hundred failure free shots-- a couple of boxes to occasionally refresh yourself on and carry would be sufficient. Ideally your practice ammo is cheap and similar to your carry ammo in terms of recoil, and shot group location.
The large quantity of target ammo accounts for a rigorous practice schedule of perhaps 500 rounds a range trip, twice a month would consume 12,000 rounds in a single year. Now helping three unprepared friends maintain similar skills over an 8 year unfriendly president administration 384,000 rounds. Buy them at $8 a box as I saw a couple years ago or $50 a box as I saw a couple months ago. The choice is yours. Oh, and if you ever HAD to equip an army with FMJ's it is good enough for the US military.

Apparently, a lot of people think a lot of ammo is 10-20k rounds of each. 2 years into this and I still see local places getting in thousands of rounds only to be depleted in days. There have got to be a lot of people w military size stock piles. There just has to be.

Typically, I have 1500-2000 rounds of each caliber, with more for what I shoot the most, 45ACP, 9mm, and 22LR. Now one thing I usually do is stock up on reloading supplies in November for the next year, and pickup enough to load around 15,000 rounds, where there is some overlap when it comes down to what the various powders, primers, and projectiles can be used for. The restocking of these supplies in 2019 is what has allowed me to keep shooting in 2020 and 2021, but my stocks of primers is getting pretty depleted after almost 2 years.
This reminds me time to go reload a few thousand. I'm slowly building my #s up to a point an ex-infanteer like myself is comfortable.
It all depends on how often you practice and how much you use on average per time. Which can depend on many factors, including what you can afford.
At minimum you need 1000 rounds for each firearm caliber. I'm way behind. I only have 1700 rounds of 556, 500 rounds of 308, 250 rounds of 10mm and 300 9mm. I am going to focus on getting 308 until I'm up to 1000 then 10mm and 9. I am going to keep stocking up ammo as long as I can get it
2000 round of 22LR (one handgun and one rifle), and about 150 rounds of 5.56 (one rifle that doesn't get used much). I use the 22LR at the range on a regular basis then replace what I use ('first in/first out' rotation methodology), the 5.56 is similar but I only shoot with it 2-3x/year to keep familiar with its operational characteristics. Maybe I'll 'up' those amounts.
I don't get out shooting very often but I'll usually run a mag or 3 of 9mm, a few dozen 38spl/357mag and maybe a handful of 12g just to not forget the recoil. .22lr tho I'll easily burn through a couple hundred rounds s just plinking of other peoples left over targets and I'll shoot 22 4 or 5 times as often.
So about 2k 9mm, 1500 38/357, 300 12g, 1k 8mm Mauser, and 15k+ 22lr long and short (for the lever 22). Just bought another 3500rounds of cphp 22 this last week
Great vid! Just hit around 23000 rds of 22lr! Which took me around 3 to 4 years to buy a box or bucket at a time. Now I'm working on 9mm, 556/233, 7.62x39, and shotgun. Hope to reach the 5000 rds soon.
I’ve been squirreling away freedom seeds for years now. All flavors combined I have well over 100k. I manage to make several hundred rounds a week but components are starting to get thin. That may end pretty soon, at least until components are available again.
When I moved from Florida in June 2020, probably the heaviest items were the ammo cans. Estimate I had 7000 rds total and was able to purchase about 5000 rds since. I am way below what I had and have been forced to lower the rds per week expended. Ammo is still not plentiful here, NOTHING like Texas or Florida. If I was willing to pay, I could buy it online and maybe it will come to that. Hope not.

I calculate my status based on how much I shoot each year. Like to have minimum 2 year supply of the calibers I shoot the most; 9mm, .45ACP, .223/5.56, 7.62x39, 6.5 Swede, .22LR, etc. Also have all components necessary to reload. I use a brass catcher when shooting my AR's to continue to build up my brass supply in 5.56 & 300 blackout. BTW, I shoot10,000+ rounds of .22LR each year, but have so much in stock that I rarely buy; only when a great deal appears. Examples: Armscor 40gr @

A local rancher that was close to the fire line called to tell the volunteers to stay away from his house and barns. She asked why. He said he had 300:000 rounds of ammunition stored in a structure that wasn’t fire proof. The fire didn’t cause him a problem as it turned out. With the way things are going that may not be enough.
I have 50,000 9mm 124g and 50,000 5.56. 1/3 m193 and 2/3 62g green tip put up that I wont shoot.....yet. I thought that was a lot until I went to my buddy's fathers house. Wholly crap , he has more ammo than Ive ever seen. He has 100s of thousands of rounds in every caliber you can think of. Freakin' arsenal of freedom.
I have just found your video. And I thought it deserved comment. I agree with your numbers in regard to ammo on hand. But I also work on the policy that once a carton is open, that carton does not count as part of your supply. So, if you peel back the tape on 5000 22rf, that box is now open. you need to replace that box ASAP, just my thoughts, Cheers.
I have 3500 rounds of 9mm at the moment. 2000 rounds of .223. Been focusing more on stocking up on 9mm. I should probably get some more .223 lol. Those are my most used calibers. Others are 7.62x39 which I have 1000 rounds of. 12ga, 7.62x51, 10mm, and 45acp I have a couple hundred
Seeing comments stating an average of 1000-3000 rounds of 9mm, put back not to be touch. Are we talking defensive hollow points? Target or mix? What kind of a ratio would be considered a good mix to have fmj/jhp?
Good question, separate minimums for fmj & jhp makes sense. The closer the bad guy, the more I would want jhp
Hollow points are bad. Get all FMJ. There's no point in having a lot of hollow points
Very valid points on your video. To me if I have "Alot of Ammo", I would have about 4K rounds per caliber. So that's 4K, 9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP, 12ga., 556. But my .22 amount would be at 7K.

Well in a firefight if you don't die the other person's carrying ammunition and a firearm a scenario where you're shooting people regularly you're picking up ammunition and guns regularly. I would never go over a thousand rounds 22 I would keep at 5000 because that's what you use to survive with and getting food in the woods
5-10k of your primaries. I don’t use “common” calibers but I should be stocking to use as “currency.” Besides your “primary” calibers - don’t forget @least 2,500 .00 & Slug….
Maybe a dumb question but what is the context for this ? Like why would I need say 1000 rounds of ammo ? I mean if shit hits the fan in not going to carry around 2-5000 rounds where I go. I mean you need clean drinking water so you'll have to travel at some point for water and to hunt . And if it's for range when ammo is short, I'll stick to a $40 laser trainer
I have two AR-15s my oldest three daughters each have one of their own and right now we have 2000 backup rounds for each rifle. They want to dip into it and go shooting so bad but I'm not letting them. For the shotguns were aiming at 500 rounds.. and even split between buckshot and slugs and the pistols ideally a thousand rounds for each. But you know being the only person in this house that has a job supporting my family well you know ammo is important absolutely but then again so isn't food and a roof. I wish oh how I wish Emma was cheaper. But then again just about everybody that has a firearm wishes the same.
I was lucky enough to stack several thousands of rounds before the events. They are however starting to get below threshold.
"A lot" is a pretty general term. But I live in a small space currently so my majority of the ammo I've bought is in storage. Things like that situation isn't keeping me from buying it but I'm still on the lookout for ammo all the time. I also just got back into firearms having gone different directions 10 years ago. That being said I had no reasonable idea of what ammo should be doing when you're a gun owner, except being collected a little over time when you can afford it.
I'm currently not shooting or have not recently. So for consideration that most of my ammo has not been touched and builds a little bit. Unlike your 22 situation, I can't find it that well or cheap as you have. But when I can find it and buy it, I do and that goes for even regular shotgun ammo as well. 5.56 and 9mm I'm somewhat holding off. Not for bad reasons just to say I'm collecting when those drop considerably. They've gone quite high as of late and my stash is relatively ok. It's not much though.
All I can say is, if there’s ever an ammo shortage I won’t be worried anymore because I learnt my lesson and facts. You can never have enough ammo ever.
I would have to agree. My 9mm Glock has 5k rounds ready. And for my AR15 is close to the 5k of 2.23. I just got a conversion kit for my Glock to run 22Lr so I'm out buying that round next. Goal to 10k rounds soon. Have about 3k currently. Good video btw. 👍

Reload ammunition, and use THAT for barter and practice. Barter using 1-5 rounds. Don't build up THEIR inventory.
I try to keep at least a minimum 2000 per caliber. On my most popular 9mm I'm all the way up to 7K, and try to replenish whatever I use every two weeks

IMHO, 10K per primary defensive caliber (.223/5.56 & 9mm in my case) would be the minimum I would feel comfortable with. I'm heading towards 20K each. Other just for fun or hunting calibers, whatever you like.
My personal opinion. 20,000 rounds per caliber. I have 7 different calibers so do the math on in my opinion a decent amount of ammo.
I went to advanced handgun training class for an afternoon I was required to bring a minimum of 500 rounds and we went through all that and more
