    Johnson knew his worth. Let’s be honest, nobody else could pull off that roll. It’s not that he’s a brilliant actor or anything but he shows a slight vulnerability at times that makes him perfect for the roll. Edward Olmos was a crucial part of the cast too. He was super cool and gave the vice squad it’s vital anchor. The guy he replaced was a joke when you compare them, more suited to MASH or a comedy show.
    The supporting vice members are class too with Switek and Zito creating their own humorous sub-plots along with the girls Calabrese and Joplin.
    Having Tubbs played by a Blackman was also another important factor as he had his own cool way and was loyal to Crockett. It’s a great show and along with the Space Shuttle, CD, MTV, Live Aid, BMX and the Walkman, Miami Vice defines the mid to late 80s.
    With cool music, amazing cameos and famous musician guest stars, it was totally original. Season 1 and 2 are essential, 3 falters, 4 is terrible and 5 gets good again but unfortunately we lose virtuoso score composer Jan Hammer as he left the project. All in all I’ve watched it all twice now and I’m ready to watch again!

      I dont remember her name but the producers hired a woman to do the costumes and told her about the show. They wanted the cops to be undercover high end dealers and rich party goers in most episodes so the costume designer decided to break the mold and dress them up in pastel colors and dressed them in high fashion since that was the look most party boys in Miami had. Since Crocket was supposed to be a beach bum type she gave him loafers but no socks, no belt, and an open jacket for the hot steamy nights, and since Tubbs was from NYC she figured he would have a more reserved look to him and dressed him a little more formal.
      It's kind of crazy but most people think the show had stereotypical 80s clothes but it didnt, the show was so influential it actually affected both the popular fashion of the time but also heavily colored how people on TV dressed and how we remember the 80s. The show wasnt a product of 80s fashion so much as the show helped create 80s pop fashion.
      The producers were amazing on this show. Perfect actors and they took a massive risk by spending most of their money on the vehicles rather than trying to save money. That's why there were so many memorable cars and boats in the series and why we get to see helicopters and planes too, they didnt just use stock footage like most shows do. They also were able to get extremely high budgets for the time and invested in famous guest stars and on licensing famous, memorable music rather than just having bland soundtracks.

    About James Olmos. Here was an actor of stage and screen added to the show. Since Johnson considered himself king of the world, he started telling the others where to stand, how he got the best lines etc. Olmos was PISSED. He was the lieutenant and forced Johnson to play by rules THAT MADE SENSE. Johnson HAD to knock before walking into Olmos’ office...glared him down when Johnson went off again.
    It worked! Everyone knew who was in charge!

    A Poorly researched and badly executed "Things you never knew ....." .
    As many below me have pointed out the show Miami Vice used neon lights and pastel colours as opposed to neon colours. No one and please read below other people's great comments that The brilliant actor James Olmos hated Don Johnson.
    P.S. _ From memory I heard that Phillip Michael Thomas on occasion rubbed people up the wrong way.
    Sandra Sauntiago who played "Gina Calabrese' on the show recently said that all the actors got on and that Don Johnson lead the way with his humility. Sandra Sauntiago added that it was the best 5-6 years of he life with her only complaint being that their contracts did not allow them to star in movies due to gruelling schedule.
    NOTE - TV shows that were NOT comedies in the Eighties ran from 20 to 26 Epidodes per year ! An Episode taking 7 days to complete AND the actors/actresses were on location for 6 to 9 months. Some show were STILL filming concluding episodes to a series when the first episodes of that particular series was being shown on TV.

      As with any time the 80s had some seriously weird fashion just like today, and there were also tons of people in the 80s rocking the "all denim" look or the "jeans and plaid" look. The hair could get pretty outrageous too. The early 80s also had plenty of holdovers from the 70s like the bile yellow shirts, weird yellows and browns for pants and shirts, or funky plaid patterns. The mid-to-late 80s and early 90s also brought on those weird wind breakers and the same synthetic material for pants that made that weird noise when it rubbed together and felt like wearing a suit made out of garbage bags with the way it held in heat and moisture and turned you into a mobile greenhouse. The 80s was also when we started seeing alot of the weird piercings on people with the young rebels and punks rocking things like safety pins, small locks, staples, or random bits of metal for piercings plus the industrial piercings mostly came about in that period.

    Larry Wilcox from “CHiPs” was the lead contender for playing Sonny. NBC decided not to go with him because he had already played a cop on TV. Don Johnson wasn’t really in the top contender list as like Tom Selleck before him, Johnson had been cast on shows back in the late 70’s that were never picked up by a network so casting him was a gamble at the time. The actor that was going to replace Johnson when he wanted to quit was Mark Harmon. The reason the role of the unit’s first lieutenant (Lt. Lou Rodriguez played by Gregory Sierra) was recast was that Gregory had to live in Miami which was something he disliked. He asked for his character be written off. This video was very shallow on facts.

      @@DavidLLambertmobile Yes. But his audition attire was atrocious. Wilcox said once he saw Johnson's attire...he knew he had been beaten. John Denver apparently also auditioned for the role. And Jeff Fahey would have been a good replacement for Johnson, also...if they continued with the show...Denver, too. Jeff was great in a heel role in "When Irish Eyes Are Crying"...especially when he aimed the stinger at the Daytona and blew it to smithereens. Jeff was good at portraying good guys, too. Check out the movie "Impulse" from 1990. He was brilliant.

    Eddy shows up on his first day of filming and finds what the set crew has created was unempathetic to the character he envisioned. They wanted a classic Lt. office cluttered and him dressed in fine suits. He wanted a sparse office and cheap suits. He saw the character of Castillo to be a driven man unencumbered by the flash and glitz of Miami. He brought a cold professionalism to the role that grated against Don Johnson's nerves (who had gotten used to being the golden boy on set.) Right from their first take together we got "Never come up to me like that again" to Tubbs, which wasn't in the script. Both Johnson and Thomas were playing a bit too fast and loose for Vice cops from Olmos' perspective.czcams.com/video/TaZ54f0uoXw/video.html

Today's Denzel or even 90s Denzel could probably make demands like that but he didnt get his first major roles until later in the 80s and he didnt start becoming really famous until the 90s. Actors dont usually get much say in a TV show or movie unless they're famous and/or have some serious connections.

One fact that wasn't mentioned was that Ferrari approached the show and threatened to sue them for copyright infringements because the Daytona that Crockett drove was not a real Ferrari. It was in fact a replica built on a Corvette chassis. They said they would provide the show with a real Ferrari if the fake one was destroyed on the show. I loved this show and was a die-hard fan. But nooo waayyy would Denzel Washington, Bridges or Nolte would have considered the role unless paid a ton of money. I wonder how sincere this video really is.

      james liu Denzel Washington was considered and offered the role of Tubbs - but it was that stage where he was becoming a mainstream movie star so didn’t accept the offer.

    Gregory Abbot "shake you down" was his audition to play Tubbs or is that an urban myth?

    • @Michael_Ace
      @Michael_Ace Před 5 lety +1

      Impossible, "Shake you down" is from 1986 and the show started in 1984
      Gregory Abbott wasn't well known during that time

    • @mancunited3845
      @mancunited3845 Před 5 lety +1

      Shake you down was released in 86 but written before then and used for his audition...
      Just like Queen first recorded their tracks in 1971 and didn't get released till 1973, then they were accused of jumping on the glam bandwagon.

      The execs at NBC wanted MTV cops so they looked around for new pilots, pitch scripts with trendy, hip, MTV type formats. Miami was seeing a few trends, fads but most called it "Gods Waiting Room" . South Beach was mostly 👴🏽👵🏻♿. Miami Vice & the rise in cocaine, drugs led to the 📈 in tourists, beach crowds.

  • @midohiobuckeyeaorwarrior9743

    Imagine Jon Baker (alias Larry Wilcox - of "CHiP's" fame) as Sonny Crockett? No way!! Mann and Yerkovich picked the right guy for the Crockett role. Don Johnson was born to play that role. MV would've bombed badly had they chosen Wilcox over DJ. And DJ's original trademark white suit was actually made by Brooks Brothers...NOT Hugo Boss...the latter the maker of the rest of the suits he wore on the show.

      If they do I would hope its on Netflix or Showtime. Twin Peaks made a comeback on Showtime, probably because ABC would never let Lynch do that again on their network. I think not worrying about watching language, showing drug use or other adult themes could make it work on those platforms. Maybe even AMC since they did Breaking Bad. There are way too many cop or detective shows on normal TV now so I fear it would just blend in and be forgotten after 6 episodes. We are about to see that on CBS since they are doing a Magnum P.I. reboot.

    Another interesting fact about this series, which I thoroughly enjoyed watching during its 80's run , is that there was absolutely nothing realistic about this series. Speaking as a 25-year LEO in South Florida, I can't help but notice from start to finish during each episode how wrong everything is. Literally everything! Lol

    there was a series prior to Miami vice with two detectives or investigators, one of which was Caucasian and the other was Black. it only lasted one season, or perhaps was a summer replacement. It had, if I remember from the reruns I saw, a musical montage segment not unlike Miami vice. However, I think they may have been representing some federal agency and were covering the south Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the northern and western part of the Caribbean. It seemed like Miami Vice was almost a direct ripoff of that other series. This was like Baretta was a direct retread of Toma.
