Music video by The Jam performing The Eton Rifles. (C) 1979 BBC Music - Hudba
What ever say you can't knock the The Jam, I now 57 and they were my favourite band as a teenager and the music still sounds raw, honest and relevant. They were the perfect band.
Their "This is the Modern World" Album sound like the early Who
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
what a catalyst you turned out to be ;oP
They are my favourites too x madness too x but Sir Paul Weller x is yummy x and his social activism makes him more beautiful x
It’s a pity they are still relevant today; it shows how little progress we’ve made in the past forty years.
Foxton's basslines are just astounding....
He's an AMAZING bassist!!
Gotta be the best!
Great player, big influence on me, doesn't get the credit he deserves.
As a bassist myself, I appreciate you appreciating the basslines
Best bass line of any Jam song
the bass, the bass... its all in the bass...truly fabulous bass playing.
It sure is. The drums are special too.
The Jam... it's all in The Jam...
Correct!
Use to play this bass line all the time. Very fun to play.
Bruce is still doing all this old stuff
Looks just the same😎
"What chance do you have against a tie and a crest?""- what a line.

17 and I just discovered The Jam, and may I say they're so amazing.
Congrats 👏 the jam are awesome

Welcome to the world of the Modfather, Paul Weller.
I'm never anything but astounded by the fact the Jam were a three piece. They still seem to constantly fill the room with sound, which is no mean feat.
The Jam was the voice of a angry generation. The soundtrack and influence of so many and still fresh and relevant today.
Grew up thinking why would a song about "eating trifles" be so good
I was born in the year 2000, my dad used to always have this band playing in the car, I loved it so much. Sadly he died in 2012 I come back every now and then to bring back the memories we had in the car. The lengths I would go to give him one last hug are unimaginable.
Your dad had great taste in music. I am sure it gave him great pleasure that you enjoyed listening to it with him.
I’m sure he will be with you in spirit when you listen to The Jam. Did he have a favourite song do you remember? My favourite album is The Gift. 🎁
As a Public school boy later a squaddie this is unbeatable 1980 age group
Growing up I lived on a council estate, some public school boys in our village used to come to the playing field for a kick around ect. They might have been posh boys but they could bloody handle themselves good lads, tbf that's the only time we seen em as they were in boarding schools.
Meant to put summer holidays 😂
I saw The Jam perform at the Winning Post in Whitton, Spring 1977.
They were totally fantastic. From 1977-82, they couldn't put a foot
wrong. This is a brilliant reminder of great pop music B.C (Before
Cowell). Watch this and weep at the current state of pop today.
No guts or passion......

Paul Weller was and still is a great man who told us a story with his lyrics
Every generation has the music they deserve. The Jam was the music of my generation. Power.
Agreed, my generation has toxic, lazy and articulate music. It’s a good job I know where the good music is at.
@@redparkes745 youtube comments make it seem like the ONLY music that gets made now is garbage, when clearly every generation has good and bad music. also what do you mean when you call modern music 'articulate' like it's a slur? articulate is a good thing right?
@@WAZOOMA artificial*. Typo. And it is mostly garbage in comparison to the 80s, I’m sure there’s a lot of rubbish there, but this generation is what killed music.

ahhh when i was probably about 5/6 and my dad would play this in the car and i'd sing eating trifles haha oh dear
@Shannon Smith - You weren't the only one 😆
From what I remember, eating trifle was a common bastardization of the lyrics 👍
Forget all the politcs! This is simply the jam at their best!
At first I thought it was eating trifles haha
Lol it's what I though the first time hearing it.
Love misheard lyrics 😆😆😆
Few things were more thrilling than seeing the Jam play this in concert. I was a lucky sob to have witnessed them.
One of my all time favourite groups. Absolutely loved the music back then. Had all the albums sadly all lost along the years..also the specials. Selecter. Bad manners madness. The kinks. Merton parkas. There was so many.
Oid codger here when jam hit 1979 what a band. Outstanding
Glorious noise coming from three great guys!
Paul Weller is about 19 yrs old in this vid!, absolute genius!!
He's 21, but I get your point.

Keep on, goin' on. On, on.
They foresaw the sheer bollocks of these last 13 Tory years. Brilliant.
Drumming on this is great, Rick suited the Jam so well and was a cracking player.
What a great talent Paul Weller is! He's up there with Marriot, Lane and Ray Davis!
+Javed Singh who?
+Graham Hesketh He means *Davies
+Javed Singh Jam were a kind of punk approach to Mod. Shame punks never adopted them cos Weller seemed pissed at the establishment. Jam had similiar production/ energy to early Clash. Even the names have similiar ring.
+Kelly14UK true that I think Weller was a quirkier and better vocalist in his prime. Also Foxton's bass is absolutely cracking.
Power trios. Pure talent. The Police, Supergrass, Cream. One thing i can't do even if i COULD sing, is play an instrument and sing at the same time.Lewis Cranston
"What a catalyst you turned out to be, loaded the guns then you ran off home for your tea left me standing like a naughty schoolboy"
Brilliant lyrics
weller is one of our fineist songwriters
I came out of an underground station in London yesterday and the first person I saw in daylight was British music Icon Paul Weller taking out his bin bags. I was photographing a party full of twenty-something Americans; of course, they had never heard of him. Who would the American equivalent be?
I also saw him a couple of years go coming out of an off licence waved to him he waved back. It was in Little Venice area.
The bass line is brilliant
Had the pleasure of meeting Paul at a gig in Sheffield ,he introduced me to his dad ,and the girl on the t shirt stall who was Paul’s sister, I’ll never forget every time Paul had a drink of his can of lager on stage he passed me the can to Finnish off, good memory’s I’m 62 now , almost forgot Paul pushed the fire exit door open and let people in who didn’t have a ticket, and yes the ex wife got Paul’s autograph on her blouse happy days.
didnt anyone hear that bass playing? absolutely genious.
Bruce Foxton is said to have been one of the best bassists in pop music.
Nice n' twanky....
Love that Rickenbacker sound. The guy's a class act.
Rickenbacker. His sound here immediately put me in mind of The Damneds' Paul Gray 1980- 82. That amazing sound.
Aye sorry, didn't see you mention the make. Those things cost a MINT. @@gary1chester
I still laugh at PM David Cameron's comment that this is one of his favourite songs. Which part of it did he not understand? ;-) All joking aside, cracking song! x
Remind who won the ruck, both in the song and in life? Eton I think
He understood it perfectly, unlike many of his detractors - you for example :)
What chance do you stand against a tie and a crest? Every chance if you stop playing the victim.
Good choice of phrase dopiaza. Playing the victim is now a national pastime. Hence the now popularity of Corbyn. His supporters that I know of don't know how to help themselves but think Jeremy's magic wand will give them everything they don't really deserve.

As usual a great story-telling song from my favourite band. What a tune!

i wouldn't go that far.@@andrew5845
For me this is three young Men aka The Jam at their zenith. The Setting Sons album was a game changer for Music, The band and for a lot of Folk like myself. The Eton Rifles put into words and melody how I felt about the matters of Class, Standing, Wealth and all that bollocks that alas does really matter. Wasteland, Little Boy Soldiers & Thick as Thieves - need I say anymore :)
Fortunate to have seen them three times, still listen to them, where did the years go!
As relevant today as it was then. The Jam meant so much to so many growing up in the UK, myself included. The irony was that for many their message was probably lost in the music as the quality was so high but regardless, some of the best storytellers ever.
Bit older than you the Jam weren't really my bag back then ,,,,BUT I loved the message in this song. You have probably put a better account of the song in your thread, not here lookin for a row there's one of them goin on down near Slough 😉 🤙
@@peterbalac1915 I am finding that as I get older I am much more receptive to music that I rejected in my youth. I will avoid Slough for now and I am clearly no match for your untamed wit.
What an incredible run of singles
Possibly the best underrated drummer in history, and I still can't rememeber his name. He really made these songs work, swing and attack. So good. Plus the sound of that Rickenbacker, and Foxton's awesome bass lines. Yes, Weller's voice and his songs made it all possible, but what a great trio.
Rick Buckler was the drummer
Paul Weller, the epitome of cool and easy on the eye ❤️
cant believe this came out in 1979, take me back remember it at the 4th form disco, thought this was early 80's tho
I saw the Jam early 80’s and thought they were the best 3 piece band in the world
Then later same year saw the Police
I then KNEW The Jam were the best 3 piece band in the world
the same for me ,weller really said something to people like me who lived in the suburbs ,i sort looked to london as that was were it was all happening but today i love the english countryside `the place i love` can reduce me to tears!
They were such a great band. I loved the jam. Great baselines
The greatest band ever imo💯👍

I love the way they have Rick Butler front and centre in a suit, on the drums!
Always loved Rick Buckler’s bolt upright drumming stance. Excellent posture.
Drumming in a collar and tie.
Foxtons bass playing is fuckin class
Absolute brilliant band The Jam........I was a teenager when this was out, and loved their music....thanks for posting TheJamVEVO
How talented and brilliant were The Jam? Seems like only yesterday when this single was released; they don't make bands like this anymore.
Ali: Yes. Back when music was used as a tool for highlighting social injustice from a genuinely furious angry young Weller in his (at least in my irrelevant opinion) finest incarnation, as lead singer of The Jam.
Obviously no social media, ergo no attempts to ingratiate himself with anybody for "likes" no faux-posturing to gain fans: That fury was totally authentic; the way he spits the words out.; What an amazing thing to see - Music made organically with the intention of making a contribution toward facilitating positive change in society.
Fat chance of that today in an industry where the 'artists' are cynically put together in a strict, tightly controlled, conveyor belt, formulaic manufactured fashion; by Cowell or Fuller. Sing utterly meaningless lyrics and can't speak, dress or shit without the permission of their svengali bosses.
What a shame.
Okay Ali, I do apologise - hope I've not lulled you into a coma with my scintillating (irony present) blathering.

Paul Weller absolute genius
Mark Singleton a GENIUS
this is one of his lyrical high points and one of jam's true greatest hits.
Rickenbacker bass is unmistakable!
Paul Weller used to purposely mime badly to show that they weren't playing live, because he disliked TOTP fakery. Or at least, that's what they'e said in the past.
Great song.
I've tried telling people that they weren't really playing their instruments on this, thought I was insane. Oh well.
Also in the ranks of "protest bad miming" are Iron Maiden, Muse, and Nirvana. Love bands who have that kind of audacity. And I sure do love The Jam.
Thomas Patrick Parker Their guitars are not plugged in......
Remember EMF doing 'Unbelievable' at The Brits? The guitarist wore a boxing glove on his playing hand.
Check out the stone roses on totp
A fellow fan of the Jam once said to me over a beer or two in the sun!.
How many members of oasis does it take to change a light bulb?
I said " go on! "
He said, 4, 3 to change a light bulb, and the other one rung Paul Weller, to ask if they were doing it right!
I still chuckle.
Much love.
Nothing changes. 2022 and thd Eton Rifles still in charge. Love The Jam. Look forwars to seeing From the Jam in Cardiff,November. 4th time

I saw the Jam the same day this single was released, they played it twice. It was one of the loudest concerts I've ever been to. Paul Weller's clangy guitar style was powerful (but pretty painful too!).

Fantastic 😍
Beautiful bass line...
I was a kid when i heard them first on radio, that played the whole album and i was hooked right away.Original voice, original style and gr8 energetic music.
The Eton Rifles was a stand alone single
A Gem of a song!.The Bass is absolutley brilliant + the Lyrics are awesome!. 😎
Music that really encapsulates a whole era. Great tunes that are crowned off with Wellers beautifully acerbic lyrics. I saw The Clash play on tour in NZ and gave a legendary concert. Unfortunately the Jam never made it out.
Today's teens can't write songs like this anymore. I was a teen when the Jam had their success and they could do no wrong. They were the band that really captured the essence of the streets in the UK in that era.
Of course they could - and many probably still are but are unheard due to the music industry these days. What's with the anti-teen bollox old man? It's not as if teens in this country are illiterate or lack creativity, with a far higher reading level than that of 'your' generation and greater awareness.
In this video Weller looks the spitting image of Jimmy in Quadrophenia.
Right?
still awesome today is Paul Weller
