  • The plaintiffs are a husband and wife. The husband went to high school with the defendant, so they hired the defendant to build two new decks on their house. The plaintiffs say the decks were built incorrectly and in bad shape. They’re suing for their money back. The defendant argues the plaintiffs were happy with the work and shared photos of the decks when the work was finished.
    Case: 31-225.

Many business owners and freelancers hurt themselves by not providing quality service. Instead, they do a half job for a quick buck, not realizing it is more profitable to maintain a good rapport with customers because they will continue to use their services or recommend them to others. A reputation for doing shoddy work can cost them long-term and deter future customers.

For what it's worth, although the defendant could have voluntarily chosen to return the full amount to the plaintiff (unlikely), the judge could not mandate that he return more than the statutory maximum for their state for a small claims matter such as this, which was $3000. The judge gave them back as much as she was able, but she is still bound by the law. Additionally, I think it was likely a typo or autocorrect, but just in case, I think you meant "shoddy" work, rather than "shotty" work (which is what you wrote).

This is what they call garden heart Redwood which also has what they call "A" grade which is yellow Lumber mixed in with the red another words it's not what they call clear all hart which is solid red , and come strictly from the center of the redwood tree Garden heart Redwood it is green Lumber full of water
When you pound 16 penny galvanized nails into green Redwood the Redwood bleeds from the water causing it to stain black that's what you see that's what you get from garden heart Redwood... this is why most people use clear all heart or clear B grade which is dry Redwood a lot more expensive to use it's not wet so you don't have black stains from pounding Nails in it most people use screws in the center decking about the length of a 16 penny nail your cross pieces underneath the deck can be green Lumber Redwood which will bleed but you won't see it the decking covers it and when you take an 8 Penny or 16 penny turn it upside down and hit the the point a couple times then pound it in and it won't split the lumber I have literally handled millions of board feet of Redwood so I know what I'm talkin about and also built Redwood decks which are huge Decks
Remember clear all heart Redwood is not green B grade Redwood is also dry with some knots in it Garden heart Redwood is green with knots in it.... like I said most people use clear all heart Redwood the only people that use Garden heart Redwood which is green are people that are trying to save money so they really don't have a bitch about the black water bleeding out of the nail holes....... I worked wholesale lumber for a company in Michigan we serviced Indiana Ohio and Michigan loading semi truck and trailers I've literally handled millions of board feet of redwood all kinds of it and also worked for a top contractor in Marin Co. where we built decks 20 feet up in the air on the side of a mountain......

My dad's a contractor. Trust me: this guy could've made time if he ever actually intended to try to fix that mess!!!

I can't believe how remarkably crappy a job that guy did, un - freakin' - believable! And this guy does that for a living? Was he drunk when he did it, was he high ,,, or is he really just very very bad at what he does. Good God, children can do better than that. This guy needs to be pushing a broom for a living, hopefully he wouldn't screw that up ,,,, hopefully. There's no defence for such outstandingly bad work, there just isn't.

The defendant was super disrespectful. Not too mention if you do a crappy job you take the time to make it right. Especially when you are a small operation.

I don't think the nails are galvanized, I've used those and it has never did that. also wood does seem to be treated. lot's of small problems on this project. I don't think guys math is up to par. It's simple measurements.

Clearly he doesn’t know the judge’s history. Family full of contractors and a husband that loves his cars 😂. Super crappy work

@ 11:10 did he just tell the judge "don't yell at me"??? WHat a POS. Big time looser. His behavior and attitude scream volumes of who he is.
