It reminds me of older asian movies with all the ridiculous special effects. And I think this video was inspired by a korean movie called Volcano High from 2001.
It revolves around a troublemaking high school student named Kim Kyung-soo (portrayed by Jang Hyuk) who finds himself transferred to the last school that will take him, the prestigious Volcano High, an institution whose students display an incredible talent in martial arts, with a few demonstrating even more mysterious psychic powers. Kyung-soo is drawn into fights between different clubs, a manuscript that is told to hold great power, and a group of teachers that will do whatever possible to keep the students in line.
I'm not quite sure if this MV is storyline related at all, or if it's just because they thought it would fit the song.
At this point I think itâs safe to say that everything that Ateez releases, besides special collaborations, is storyline. I donât want to give any spoilers so all Iâll say is that diary version albums and narrations done by Maddox seem to give the most context. And I am pretty sure it is confirmed that Yunho and Jongho are not related in the storyline. In Yunhoâs epilogue from one of the Fever Road episodes he said that Hongjoong reminded him of his brother so idk đ€·đ»ââïž
Honestly, this comeback just maked me so excited for what Ateez plans for the future!đ„°đ
There is a scene in inception where yeosang is on a bed with white feathers falling around him idk if that's what you were thinking of (?) also the ending melody is the same one from wave. The music at the end of eternal sunshine is the melody (?) of the real. Love the reaction
This is my fist time commenting because usually I can never figure things out đ but this time I got some.
About Turbulence, the original Korean title is ìŒê°ëčí, which means ânight flightâ, so I guess thatâs why they mention it a few times in the lyrics and the whole mv was shot at nighttime. As you said and as many atinys believe, I too am quite sure the whole Turbulence mv shows the consequences of Yeosang breaking the hourglass at the end of Deja Vu and, maybe, he puts his phone on airplane mode because he doesnât want to face those consequences.
Also, I want to say something about Wooyoung and San, since their storylines are connected: I think that Wooyoung starts to fly because he wants to reach San but he canât because the hourglass is broken, or as other atinys said Wooyoung can fly because he has moved on, while San canât because heâs still struggling with something, but Iâm not sure. Some people even said that in the Wonderland mv Wooyoung may be chained bc they donât want him to fly; Iâm not sure about this one but it could be since the whole Fever era happened before the Treasure one.
About the song, what game me goosebumps was Hongjoongâs reference to Fever lyrics when he said âpassion, young, feverâ and the melody of Wave playing at the end. Tbh the last part got me ugly crying because Wave is such a happy song about facing everyoneâs struggles together, while here it sounds so sad. Honestly, the message of these two songs are similar and they both give so much hope but Turbulence feels so intimate and sad, I canât even describe it.
Moving onto The Real, the mv is full of Korean traditional elements, so I guess thatâs why itâs extremely hard to decipher.
First of all, the title ë© means can be translated into so many different way: it means âcoolâ, âcharmâ but in Korean itâs something more; it both means those things but with respect and honor. Iâm not sure it makes any sense because, again, itâs a very Korean concept but thatâs why the chose to call it âThe Realâ and not just âcoolâ. Also, í„ can be translated into âflourishingâ or âprosperingâ and Iâm quite sure we can all see the difference between the Kingdom version and this one, I mean this version is full of Korean traditional instruments.
About the mv, many people figured out that Mingi is a new student and the others belong to different extracurricular clubs: Wooyoung and San are in the baseball team, Seonghwa and Hongjoong are in the calligraphy club (yes, Seonghwa is holding a calligraphy paintbrush, you were right) and Jongho and Yunho are especially bikers. Iâm not sure about Yeosang role but it might be related to the storyline. As you said while reacting to Turbulence, both in the Inception mv and the diary film, Yeosang comes from a rich family and his parents are forcing him to study and play the violin. So, maybe, in this mv heâs still the rich kind and his waiting for the others to reunite before breaking free and join them. I hope it makes sense. I feel like this version is a celebra of Korean culture, but also a criticism of maybe the society or the school system.
Since you were so curious about what some of the writings said, Iâm gonna try to explain it. Iâve been studying Korean for two years, so it may not be precise but Iâll try my best.
On the cover of Mingiâs book you can read ëë, which means âethicsâ or âmoralityâ, while the book they are holding at the end is called ë© ê°ì í, which means âThe Real, revised editionâ, so this is connected both to the meaning of the mv and the whole concept of this comeback. On the baseball bat San is holding you can read ìŽì ì”ì° aka âpassion Choi Sanâ and we all know they mention the word passion so many times in their songs; you also find it on the scroll Yunhoâs holding in the dance break scene, it literally says âpassion, passion, passionâ.
The last thing i wanna mention is what Hongjoong writes down on the floor and his fan. The word who see him write is êČžì, which means âmodesty, humilityâ and itâs mentioned in the lyrics as well. If you look closely at the banners in the room, some of them say âpoliteâ and ânobleâ, this one is a good representation of the concept of ë©. About Hongjoongâs fan, the writing says êČžìì§ë which represents the âbeautiful virtue of always being able to humble yourself and give way to othersâ, again another great translation of what ë© is.

Well, the very ending of 'Turbulence' gave me a feeling of something very familiar which confused me at first. But then it hit me: the end of 'Turbulence' is the beginning of 'Wave' of course, which makes sense because 'FEVER' era is a prequel
I feel like they were broken when Mingi needed to have his break and his return has made them whole again and The Real felt like a celebration of them being together and strong. I kind of feel a bit like Turbulence is them acknowledging themselves growing up and evolving and them saying how hard that is. I don't know, I kind of get a sense of them moving in to a more mature phase. The Real is just so much fun. I LOVE that middle eastern kind of sound near the end.

Honestly, I've long stopped trying to understand any storyline going on for any of the groups I listen to because I just never know what is going on. The only thing I knew while watching The Real was that Mingi was a new student at the school, seonghwa/hongjoong were part of the same club, san and wooyoung were in the same club and jongho and yunho were in the same gang and Yeosang represented peace somehow because of the doves around him and everything lol
The Real might be my favorite Ateez song. At least one of them. I'm a sucker for the mixing of traditional and modern.

I got lost on their storyline awhile ago, but i agree with you on thinking both mvs are a part of it somehow, especially the yeosang part. The hourglass breaking with him, them being all separated on Turbulence and Yeosang at first just watching everyone on The Real; it all means something and I need someone to make sense of all this and explain it to me, because I'm struggling here lol
I absolutely loved both mvs. Turbulence is so sad and beautiful, but at the end it gives a sort of hopeful feeling to me. I'm not sure if just the way they composed the song, their voices or the lyrics (i feel like the lyrics change the tone of the song). They start saying "Can someone just embrace me?", then change it to "Embrace me in your warm arms" to finally "Still fly, embrace me more". It's a small change in the writing but completely different in meaning. At least to me. I might just be going crazy. Maybe that hopeful feeling comes from the wave melody at the end. Wave is such a happy song about being able to overcome all hardships together, so maybe that's it.
And The Real is like the exact reason i love Ateez. The song is incredible as always, they sound and look amazing and it's such a chaotic, crazy and fun mv that I think represent them really well. The fact that they have "Passion" written several times throughout the mv says a lot about who they are as artists. And I couldn't be more proud.

i think some other people have commented on it but I think it's based on the 2001 movie Volcano High? Which is about a martial arts school, a transfer student with amazing powers arrives in the midst of a search for a mystical tome. Also in the beginning of Turbulence Yeosang is sitting in the classroom with the desks sort of in a circle around him like how the classroom looks after Mingi uses powers to move them in the Real
