Add me to the list of people.... I love your channel. Not to take anything away from the GCN but your humour and storylines are cooler. Your Vancouver episode got me hooked. If you’re ever in Muskoka region I can get a bunch of rabid cyclists to take you up and down some hills here on the edge of the Niagara escarpment.... or we can all just go out for cookies and beer.... whatever works. How’s the new bike working out? Impressions so far?

Another great video, love the backing music for the climb and a top effort. Bit grim about cycling safety in Florida though

Phil, loved your content and outlook prior to watching this video, but, now learning that you went to UF and spent a lot of time riding the Gville, I dig you even more. I was just back up there and rode out on 241 to Millhopper Road and remembered how much I love riding there. Keep up the content-you are inspiring me to want to climb even though I am down in flat Southwest Florida. I-75 overpass, here I come!

Great breakdown of Florida and the Florida experience, but you forgot to add running into a potbellied Québecer wearing speedos, a tank top, and flip flops at the shopping mall for the complete “La Florida” experience😂😂😂

Ohhhh, Sugarloaf brings back a lot or memories. I live only 15 miles or so from there, and I've climbed it a couple hundred times at least during the 25 years I was in racing. I think back to the state road race championships held there several times in the early 90s. 10 laps and 10 climbs up Sugarloaf for cat 1,2 men. In 91 I attacked on the 2nd lap, with a small group coming with me. By the 8th lap I was by myself off the front, when John Lieswyn and Mark Swart caught me at the base of Sugarloaf with 1 1/2 laps to go (The S/F line was at the south end of Sugarloaf Mt Rd, near CR561A). I was too fried to stay with them on the climb, but had a big enough gap on everyone else that I hung on for 3rd. Disappointing, but then Lieswyn went on later that year to be part of the 4 man team to set a new US national record in the 100K team time trial, breaking the 2 hour mark. The next year I attacked on the first lap, again a small group coming with me, dropping off one by one till only one other rider, Steve Franco, managed to hang on. Then in the exact same spot as the year before, Carl Sundquist and another rider caught us just as we got to Sugarloaf with 1 1/2 laps to go. Steve got dropped, but I still felt good and managed to hang on. I stayed with Carl and the other rider till we got to Sugarlaof again on the final lap. This other guy had puked water just before we got there, so I figured he was pretty much done, and he did get dropped immediately as we started to climb. Then about 1/2 or 2/3 of the way up, as I sat of Carl's wheel, I saw him swift to one harder gear, stand up, and slowly pull away from me. I just didn't have enough left to stay with him. By the top he had a good gap on me, and ended up winning, with me getting 2nd. Another disappointment, but he would have kicked my ass in a sprint finish anyway, as later that year he was in the Barcelona Olympics representing the US in the individual pursuit on the track, and I was one of the worst sprinters in Florida. Ah, memories.

Hey, nice vid. I grew-up in Orlando and rode out to Clermont quite often on a 1970 Centurion back around the turn of the century. A technical note to know about Sugarloaf... Britton Hill, in the Panhandle, is actually higher at 345 feet, but there's almost no discernible prominence. Sugarloaf is the highest point in peninsular Florida at 312 feet, and has the highest prominence at 245 feet. So, for all intents and purposes, this is the "mountain" in Florida.

I’m Canadian. I just learned about boiled peanuts two weeks ago when chatting with a friend from Georgia. He sent up a few “can’s” of boiled peanuts in brine. Boiled peanuts in the shell in a can, in brine. I don’t even know what to say about that. The old fella you ran into is the colonel of boiled nuts. Bien Fait!

Wrong. The further away from the coast the more southern you get. So you can go pretty far south in Florida and as long as you’re like 90 minutes from the coast, you’ll be in the South.

in the early nineties a friend and I would do the long drive from Sarasota out to there once or twice a month to ride the "hills" and this was where the State championship road race was held. Even though I was in great shape when I did that race I cramped so bad on that hill I had to stop right there. There were also a couple hills closer to Tampa in , I want to say, San Antonio people called "bunny ears" ? I'm pretty sure I still had a 42x21 at the time! :)

I should probably preface what I'm about to say with the fact that I love Phil Gaimon's channel and content (especially the earlier stuff) but I do have one issue with the dude.... and this should go without saying....taking a lead out on most KOMs is not ok. If you know the KOM was taken in competition where dedicated domestiques were going all out then fine, get your buddy to do a lead out for you. Otherwise KOMs are time trials and taking a lead out compromises the sportsmanship and integrity of the effort. If shortcuts are your thing here's a few others you can try... EPO, Salbutamol, Motor Pacing, &*^% it just do it in your car. To be fair to Phil he did put that he took a lead out in the title of his ride which is as good as an asterisk. My two cents.
