  • On the 4th of August 1900 Boer Commander Koos De La Rey lays siege to the Imperial Supply Depot at Brakfontein near the Elands River.
What followed was almost two weeks of hard fighting on all sides, a British Blunder and a Rather Ingenious use of Goats.

Australian troops were Imperial after 1901 in WW2, the AIF. BSAP were Rhodesian police It was formed as a paramilitary force of mounted infantrymen in 1889 by Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company, from which it took its original name, the British South Africa Company's Police. Initially run directly by the company, it began to operate independently in 1896, at which time it also dropped "Company's" from its name. It thereafter served as Rhodesia's regular police force

pom poms are multiple barrel high fire rate, used in ship defence. used as anti aircraft in the 2nd ww. But were also used in earlier land wars. They were a lot more annoying to Australians at elands than 12 pounders resulting in them going out at night and attacking them. The reason they called the trenches that name was because it was impossible to dig trenches in what was basically sand. 26 Australian dug a 2 foot deep trench along the river in the sand over a Km length to make it appear that there were more troops than there were defending the water supply, boers did actually attack the river defenders with pom poms and the Australians went out of a night and silenced them. The aggressive Australian patrolling you speak has always been a characteristic of Australians in warfare to deny the enemy sleep at night. Its was called peaceful penetration and was carried out by various size patrols. it hit its peak in ww1 when Australians went out one night and eliminated an entire battalion of germans without German high command knowing which infuriated Lutendorf. Incidently you mention breaker morant, who was indeed guilty of murder and should have been tried by Australians, his mate was also involved - Captain Antill, who was the actual soldier who ordered the futile 4 Charges at the neck at gallipolli resulting in a massacre when 3 charges went ahead. Us Australians like to blame the british for this disgrace, but it was Antill who ordered it, as his commanding officer was a drunkard who was unconscious at the time

Thanks for making this. I have only just learned of this battle from a book about Australian war stories which only had a short story about this. That, along with your video, has made me want to look further into The Boer War as a whole (which I know almost nothing about). Thanks again.

The Siege took place in 1900 a year before Federation so these men were fighting on behalf of their respective States/Territories rather than as a unified nation. At least in name in practice it was basically all Australia by this point.

Thank you, however, you have presented some very inaccurate facts. For example the war ended in 1901, not as you said 1902? Elandsfontein was a huge strategic victory for the Afrikaners as the siege tied up other troops who were designated to achieve other British strategies.

    • @AnotherHistorianWargamer
      @AnotherHistorianWargamer  Před 2 měsíci

The war most certainly did not end in 1901. Major commanders were still very much active until March 1902 and the war did not end until May 1902. De le Rey and Kemp were still fighting in 1902. The war ended on May 31st 1902 with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging.
Elandsfontein was indeed a big victory in the First Boer War but this video is about the Siege at Elands River in the Second Boer War which was a British Victory.

That's a common opinion. Although it should be noted that 250,000 South Africans Volunteered for (not conscripted) Imperial Service during WWI, a little over 4% of the entire population while only 12,000 rose up in rebellion. Twenty times as many South Africans fought for the Crown than rose against it during the War.
In WWII more than 300,000 volunteered for Imperial Service.
Far more South Africans fought for the Empire than ever fought against it. Not saying it's good or bad, it just is.

Shame the British 450 000 troops consisting of ozzis rhodesians canadians scots wales and irish had to turn the war to Boer woman and children to win the second war , that doesn't say much about them fighting woman and children , yes and at the end the rhodecians did surender and rodesia became zimbabwe .

This is one of my biggest hates of insurgent lovers.
"Dumb British they fought in lines while we were guerillas they're so dumb for having rules"
"How dare the British stop following the rules"
If you make the cornerstone of your strategy hiding behind women skirts and living off local farms how else is the enemy supposed to deal with you? There's a reason wars are fought the way they are. If people don't respect the neutrality of civilians by hiding behind them that creates horrific situations. That doesn't justify internment camps but if your farm is being used to supply guerillas then it's got to be taken out of action.
What's your solution to that problem? You defeat an enemy, you take his entire country, all the major cities and strategic points and he refuses to stop fighting. What's the solution to that and don't say "just quit" because that just makes any war ever impossible to win.
Not all British Commanders were in favour of the camp system and strongly protested against it

Huge deposits of gold and diamonds were discovered in Southern Africa. The Boers were from Dutch & French decent and weren't keen to cooperate with the imperial plans of the Brits of a railway (read economy & power) track connecting The Cape to Cairo in Egypt.
