    The genius of this scene. Jared Leto could have easily played this scene over the top, sucking up for sympathy. But instead he found a very honest and sincere place in his character Rayon's soul where her dialogue comes from a place of sorrow, loneliness and terror. That is the craft.

      The guy playing his father did great too because you see how as soon as he learns his son has AIDS he removed his glasses and is supressing major sadness he doesn't want to show. When he says "Rayon" at the end of the conversation he says it from a place of love and compassion not a place of judgement or resentment like a minute earlier when he walked into the office.

      Sad that he had to grieve twice: once for the little boy he lost, and then later for the woman he will never get to know. He pushed Rayon away and grieved for the boy he felt he was losing, the man he thought was destiny, and in the process, he never truly got to enjoy meeting Rayon until she was dying and it became too late. He lost a son, gained a daughter, but then lost that daughter, too. With this prejudice, Rayon's sister also lost the chance to stay close with her sibling past childhood. We may not always agree with what our children do or become, but we should try to keep them close, because once a life is gone we can never get it back.

We have intersex people and many other things. Like for example Lili Elbe, one of the first trans girls to come out in the 1930s she was assigned male at birth and lived that way till she was grown. And when she finally realized she was a woman she started living as her true self. She got surgeries and stuff and it eventually killed her cause the technology wasn’t perfected at the time. And when they were turning her penis into a vagina they found a dried of microscopic uterus in her stomach. That proves that biology isn’t as simple as you and other ignorant people think. Now I don’t feel like arguing with you I was just informing you and hopefully make you understand why you were wrong. Jesus, what a powerful and sad rebuttal to his own father. That, my friend is acting. You can tell by the way he looks at his father he is saying are you happy dad because I am destroyed not by the disease of AIDS, but more from your intolerance and shame in your own son. Don't we all want to be loved and accepted especially from our own family?! Oh my Lord, we do. We definitely do. One of the most heartbreaking scenes I have ever witnessed between a father and son in cinematic history. Jared Leto won the Academy Award with this scene more than any other in my opinion.

    This scene reminded me that Jared Leto was the one playing Rayon. He completely transformed physically and completely immersed himself into this character that I had forgotten who it was. Much like with the Joker in the Dark Knight where you see him in that one scene with no makeup on and you're like, 'Shit thats right, its Heath Ledger.'

    I hope to meet someone as sweet and genuinely kind as Rayon. Jared didn't just look and acted the part, he transformed into the part. For example, your can tell Ron is played by Mathew McCannaha (I know I spelled that wrong) by his voice and some of his mannerisms. But if I hadn't seen the trailer of Jared playing Rayon I would have thought is was a new up and comer. Never mind the high heels he so graciously walked in, it's that voice. How was he able to talk in that voice?

    McConaughey and Leto deliver some of the best work of their careers in Dallas Buyers Club- the "he is helping you, I have AIDS" line effectively guts the audience- in the simplest way possible... No music emphasizing the sadness, no other over the top dialogue accompanying this line to drive the point, just that raw sentence delivered by Leto- his facial expression, body language, vocal inflection, along with perfect timing are the tools he's working with here, and wow.... Some may disagree, and I expect that- I'm sure there are some people whom weren't moved at all by that scene; different strokes for different folks. Regardless, it is a powerful film about a very real point in time.

    I feel so bad for Rayon but I sympathize with the dad as well. You have to look at it from his point of view. Of course he is going to think Rayon's the way he is by choice b/c he doesn't know any better. Now his estranged son tells him he has a deadly disease with no cure that he believes Rayon brought upon himself (again out of ignorance). It's the early 1980s in Texas and the dad cannot openly weep for his son out of fear of what could happen to him/his family/his livelihood. The whole situation is heart-breaking & totally fucked up.

    • @perezdavidangel
      @perezdavidangel Před 4 lety +1

      He can openly weep. Nothing would of happened to him. Yes, he thinks Rayon being gay and dressing as a woman was a choice. That's why he says, he had a choice if he wanted to be included in the family. He started crying because even though he disowned his son, deep down he still cares about him. The father never thought about his son ever getting aids.
