- With Blasphemous 2 around the corner, I just had to complete the religious horror themed metroidvania that is Blasphemous. This indie game is unforgiving with deep storytelling that makes it stand out from other platformer titles.

If you like “Blasphemous”, I’d like to recommend to you “Death’s Gambit”. Similar vibe, but less intense and more otherworldly terror as apposed to religious terror in its world design. I’d also say “Death’s Gambit” has a much clearer story, side characters, and it’s easier (still not EASY, but easiER). Hope you give it a shot.
A lot
Bought, played and finished this game back before any of the dlc, I wanted to jump back in and play the dlc but when I did I was overwhelmed with all the different aspects of the game that I had completely forgotten so I never did any of it. After watching this video I want to experience all that beautiful content but it's hard when playing remnant 2 and lies of p is out soon as well as blasphemous 2 which I have pre ordered, not to mention the 200+ games in my backlog lol
The Spanish creators of Blasphemous deserve all the sucess of the world!
I remember playing the demo for Blasphemous a while ago, and I had to say I was *really* impressed with how well Souls style combat translated to the Metroidvania genre in it; of course, at the time, I *wasn't* used to looking for deeper themes in media, so while I noticed some enemies had religion inspired design elements, I didn't realize that the whole atmosphere of the game was meant to invoke the true *horror* of religion. I also didn't know that that was inspired by the history of the developers' own hometown, as I didn't even know *where* it was developed, or the *history* of where it was developed until now; but this's *renewed* my interest in it, and with Blasphemous being on sale on Steam right now, I think I'll pick it up!
As a native Spanish speaker, it was surreal playing a game in Spanish for the first time.
I try to always play games in their original language, so that's like 80% English and 20% Japanese (with English subtitles).
It was very weird at first listening to Spanish in a game, and knowing that that's the actual original way in which everything was conceived.
Agree after I played it a second time I played it in Spanish and the feel along with voice actors it gave it more authenticity
@@Jewcydaddy In my case, it really helps that my Spanish is from Latin America, but the game uses Spanish from Spain. It helps to make it sound familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.
@@robTCGZSpanish from southern Spain. It even uses some archaic/idiomatic expressions which are difficult to understand to some Andalusian people. Thick accent, but it sounds so cool
My 1st language is french, 2nd english, and I also played it in spanish on 1st playthrough, it was amazing!
Commandos: Behind the Enemy Lines being another one. Argentinian here, mate!
While Goya's painting was actually called 'A Procession of Flagellants', Jirard's description of 'A Procession of the Flatulence' sounds far more exciting.
Say it with me - pen-UH-tence.
17:56, he says it right finally!
dude i died when I heard him pronounce it like that 💀
thats what happens when you're reading someone else's script sometimes lol
@@zachwilliams8348yeah all this talk of "pentinance" is true suffering
That game's art direction is something else. if you told me like 30 years ago that one day there'd be a platformer with such imagery I'd have laughed you out of the room.
It has the best pixel art I've ever seen in a game. It's truly beautiful work.
Don’t forget the amazing soundtrack!
@@thelaughingrouge It’s not gothic, it’s baroque.
@@pacoramon9468 Both often overlap as of late though. Dark Baroque or Gothic-Lite, so it might be why this person said "gothic".
Though I'd like a Castlevania crossover, since they did have a crossover with Dead Cells recently.
@@pacoramon9468if it ain't baroque don't fix it
Blasphemous is one of my favorite games of all time and definitely the platinum trophy I am most proud of. Thank you for finally bringing this to the channel.
The Spanish creators of Blasphemous deserve all the sucess of the world!
how long did the platinum take you
This game pulled me back into the genre. Not too hard, not too easy. Great exploration, weird dark souls story, epic bosses. It all around feels good to play.
Too damn hard for me. My hand eye coordination is too slow and fkd. I don't have the reflexes.
Not too hard? Sheeittt!
I'm almost 40 and I managed. If u want it gotta work for it.
@@Abolistable I completely understand Im definitely playing the sequel
Kinda bummed out its not on the PS4. Some of my pals have not made the plundge yet so I'll be going in solo.@@tyronedasher5408
“Dark Souls like” translation-> “give me pain”
"give me pain daddy"
This game was unbelievable. It feels more like a book than a game, similar to why I fell in love with ff7 back on release... the mind fills in so many gaps, and I think horror works best that way ... especially when it's based on a culture that is alien to your own
One of my all time favorite games. I can't wait for the sequel, it's by far my most anticipated game.
Same!
Help I can't beat crisanta phase twoooo
Every time Jirard mispronounces "penitence" I think back to Indiana Jones and his dad saying "penitent" over and over. :D
I counted 3 pronunciations one for each ending haha
Penitence
Petinence
Pentinence
Carlos Viola OST is a masterpiece, a homage to D2. Also, Spanish voice actors were wonderful, the delivery is not matched with the English version.
I'm so happy that a game from a small studio in souther Spain still gets so much attention wordlwide.
This game is just amazing its like a castlevania game with hardcore horror. The mythology art direction and music as well as the gameplay I can't even describe just how great it is. I really can't wait for the sequel.
You try the sequel yet? I've been having a blast so far!
One of the best games of the last 10 years.
I used to skip a some of your videos, because you seemed to give a lot of indie developers a lot of attention. At the time I wasnt really interested in anything other than AAA. Boy was I wrong. Indie games are where soul and passion burns bright and man can you feel it. I am happy you did this game and im happy I came around to games like this.
I feel you buddy. I had my mind blown when I played Hollow Knight.
It takes honor and humility to admit being so wrong. I'm proud of you and agree. I was heavily leaning on triple A and garbage like overwatch back then, but now I seriously appreciate games made with actual love.
Honestly was the same way, then I played hollow knight, had to start checking out more indie games after that
I’m glad you’ve seen the light and expanded your scope of games.
Glad u turned to the good side....AAA games have become the sour patches of the gaming industry...thats not to say there areny any good AAA games....ofc not....theres still a few amazing titles
but indies r where true gameplay and true passions r found....Glad to see a new comer enjoying these games
Have had this game in my backlogs and hearing that a sequel is coming soon makes me excited to play
Since the games release, its found itself in a special place among my favorite games. Blasphmeous became that title I would answer with whenever I was asked for game suggestions by anyone. Its art is incredible, it feels so intense, and its music is just masterful. We all joke about listening to game OSTs outside of playing the game, but the score here deserves every listen I give it.
Finally Blasphemous is getting the love it rightfully deserves!! A truly memorable experience along with fun gameplay and an awesome soundtrack!! Heres to the sequel!
Just finished this game not too long ago, and it is fantastic. Cannot wait for the sequel.
As a Spaniard, you have no idea how happy I am to see this game to become more and more popular.
I does with Southern Spanish culture something similar to what Japanese pop culture does with its own: take it as heavy inspiration to create something modern and new for people nowadays.
Probably some of you are thinking "D'uh!". But you'd be surprise to know that's actually EXTREMELY difficult to do in Spain for multiple reasons.
Also, between this and Mercurysteam... Is Spain becoming a Metroidvania heaven? lol
"Is Spain becoming a Metroidvania heaven?"
I don't know but the majority of indie games are Metroidvanias.
You are going to have a harder road than the Penitent one to absolve you of your sins my dude
DAMN. 😳
I played it a year after it's release and it was the first legit Metroidvania I had ever played. I'm so stoked for the sequel and the exposure it's been getting recently, the devs deserve every bit of praise.
We need more and more games from this company. Can’t wait to play the sequel.
Blasphemous is one of those games I picked up on a whim knowing people liked it but having no real expectations but man after finishing it its firmly in my top 3 metroidvania games of all time it's just so good
So glad you got to play this. It's been one of my favorites, despite how hard it was.
After getting the true ending, I couldn't help but be excited for the sequel.
I like when u do the number wrap ups like 50 hrs played through 4 play throughs, 20 bosses slain, 100 quests completed etc.
3:43 my favorite visual moment of the game, I absolutely cannot wait for 2.
Hi Jirard, great video!! I truly adore this game. The developers really did an excellent job and i fully commend their hard work and applaud their sucess. The art direction is simply amazing alongside the fantastic music and the fact they based it on some of their love for their heritage and culture that can really can make a lasting impression on anyone. The world is bleak and full of terrifying secrets that's yet to be unraveled. The combat is punishing but very rewarding and i do appreciate they really put so much detail on how you will adapt to the gameplay as the game continues to roll on. I really do recommend anyone to try this game out and I'm very looking forward to their upcoming sequel!!!
Thanks for showcasing this game! Blasphemous was one of my top games during the Dark Times of Covid. I played it off and on for nearly a year before deciding to finally 'finish it.' As hellish as it was to be brutalized by the game and the varied enemies it threw in my direction, I kept going just to see what was going to appear on the next level. And that soundtrack...one of gaming's best, in my opinion. I haven't played any of the new expansions so I can't speak on that, but perhaps one day I'll pick up my sword and venture back to Cvstodia to see what I missed out on.
I'm so glad you've put your spotlight on this game! Even with all the accolades it's received, it's still UNDERRATED. The Music and Art direction are worth it alone. Thanks!
The soundtrack to this game is absolute peak👌
I just started this game today. This game is a Souls game disguised as a Metroidvania game, and I'm enjoying it. I'm glad I watched this video. It gives me the motivation to keep going and trying to unlock things and finish the game.
Goya's dark paintings are so good that "unsettling" might be an understatement lol
52 hours to complete is damn impressive
he doesn't do it by himself.
@@billlee1821he doesn’t?
this is so freaky i just got the last achievement for blasphemous today. an amazing game and experience cant wait for blasphemous 2
I’m so glad you I finally made this video. I loved this game so much. I think it’s up there with my favorites along with Hollow Knight and Shovel Knight. Thanks Jirard!
I have gotten several platinums this month. Feel like the completionist myself 😂 did the gta trilogy, ratchet and clank and finally polished off skyrim. Also very close with burnout paradise. You always impress me fella. Keep up the good work.
The art aesthetic is just phenomenal!
a great game that doesn't get talked about enough so happy to hear Jirard weigh in on it
The Spanish creators of Blasphemous deserve all the sucess of the world!
Ah yes, Catholicvania. Finally finished up the last story update while on the last challenge mode. It was freaking tough but i beat it and super excited for Blasphemous 2.
I absolutely in love with this game, the music, the atmosphere, the platinum journey
Can't wait to play Blasphemeous 2, i fell in love for the world, lore, and art style of this game.
I’m glad I played it late and friends recommended using the Spanish VO. I don’t speak Spanish but man did it sound great.
Whenever I see another Souls-Like game of this sort, a part of me longs to play it, but then I remember how bad my reflexes have become as the years have rolled by, and I realize I probably shouldn't. Still, the game looks fantastic, and has a very neat art style to it, and I can see why it would pull folks in. Glad this one didn't end up punishing you too hard Jirard, looking forward to the next one.
As Andalusian, it's quite a privilege to see a videogame studio not afraid of taking risks of using our catholic iconography and tropes to create an absolute masterpiece.
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it! Excited to see how the sequel holds up here soon. Hope to see you at Indy PopCon!
Yo, that opening went HARD! Keep it up, Jirard!
This was a really cool watch, I had no idea about the background of the game. My grandmother is from Seville, so I'm definitely going to check this one out.
Enrique Cabeza, the head of creative direction in Game Kitchen , nominative determinism strikes again
Given how they keep adding more great free DLC to this game, I'm really not surprised it took until now for you to make this vid about this amazing game.
I hadn't thought to try the game in Spanish. I might do that for my next playthrough of it.
9:40 Fun fact: The level designer, Enrique Colinet, is also a professional voice actor who worked as it in another game at the same time: Kofi Quest. When the Spanish voices were added to Blasphemous he did some voices for it.
Wow. I thought he was avoiding think for his mental health.
I really appreciate the on screen visuals for the rating system. I semi-recently found this channel and it took me forever to figure out the system.
Chilean here. I always make it my goal to play games in English because I have opinions on the Spanish language. But this game needs to be played in Spanish. It gives the game a completely different favor. It feels like the way it was meant to be. And aside from that, hot damn this game is good.
Excelente trabajo, Game Kitchen. Cuento los días para la secuela. 👍
Chileno tmbn, es interesante ver cómo los elementos y la iconografía católica se sienten tan cercanas, encima que juegazo 💪
So pumped! Been waiting for this episode for a while! Congrats as always!
This game is so well made, I recently bought the sequel and still it is great but the first has a special mark in my heart, the music, the art, the voices, the spanish voice actors not only narrate but they imprint a very strong feeling into all the interactions, even if they are only NPC's and not main antagonists they do add to the mysterious, creepy vibe of the game, El penitente may live forever in our memory!!!
My respect to you for undertaking the completionist route and get all the juice from this wonderful game, I still have to explore the DLC's after having finished the main pilgrimage, for me it is very difficult with the paths of penance for new game plus. so hats off!
One of the best metroidvanias of all time. This game sticks with you due to gameplay, bosses, atmosphere, game & art design, storytelling, and the music. A solid 10/10!!!
Blasphemous is the game I point to anytime I need to make the ‘art direction trumps sheer graphical fidelity’ argument. It’s a hauntingly beautiful game, made by one of the most passionate teams I’ve ever seen.
This game is so good. One of my favourite artstyles in any game
Jocinero is my favorite character. Such great art.
Omigod I'm SO GLAD you reviewed this game finally!!! I'm stuck on crisanta 2nd phase and can't progress though
I haven’t had the chance to play this yet, even though it’s sitting in my Steam library, but I adore the art design. Can’t wait to experience the whole thing for myself.
When I think of strong thematic games with striking subject matter, Blasphemous is certainly one of the first games that come to mind for me. It's such a twisted, horrifying world, yet captivating and filled with bleak beauty. As a Christian, I'm always intrigued by art that tackles religion, even if the narrative isn't supporting what I believe. I always like to read things from different perspective. It made me want to write a story or book set in that style of world where half-insane people cling on to their twisted views of religions they don't quite understand.
I'm a bit of a completionist as well and yeah, the best reward for a completed save is when the save slot is different from the rest. Be it a sick border with symbols like on this one, or just a small star.
When I looked at this game & saw it was on sale for less then $10, I had to get it to try out & this game is a blast!
Best intro i've seen in a while
So hoping you would do Blasphemous! I loved it so much. I am SO hype for part 2!🙌
I love how they made NG+ a new game just like Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the first Sin. It makes NG+ totally worth playing as well as adding elements of surprise.
I think I originally followed you for some Zelda and Pokémon games. Now I like to see games I’ve missed out on while I was in college. Definitely gonna buy this one.
My Father is from Seville and ever since my Childhood he always kept religious Imagery around and annually watched their Festivities on TV. Yet I never knew Seville is known for all this, but it makes so much sense now
I loved Blasphemous so much, from the day I played it the first time, and I still do. It’s a ridiculously perfect game. I can’t wait to dive in Blasphemous II! As always, thank’s so much for the content Jirard!
What a coincidence, I just downloaded the game to play soon.
I'm from Spain and Blasfemous' depiction of Sevilla is point on, from the atrocities in the streets to the public punishment, and the weird tree guy inside the Torre del Oro
Been waiting for THIS one! Great video bro
Always nice seeing a game I backed on Kickstarter here. I firmly agree with Jirard, and I am intrigued by the approaching sequel.
This game looks awesome! I really can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for another great review, Jirard.
Always makes me happy when Salt and Sanctuary is mentioned
Just beat this on stream last night what perfect timing hahaa
I completed this game around 100% with good ending and collected every bone and item, rescued every angel. But I didn't play through the 2 DLC when the DLCs came out after i completed the game. Very much want to go through the penance again by playing the DLCs whenever i saw videos talking about it and the music.
Awesome video - blasphemous has such great atmosphere, folk lore, and level design.
Slowly but surely working through this game myself. I’ve never been a souls-like fan but I love metroidvanias so I had to pick it up. It’s definitely challenging and I don’t know what half of the collectibles even do, but I’m having a great time regardless!
Absolutely loved this game! Great episode!
at the point where I’m gonna like this at the beginning of the video and just assume you spit some heat. Great stuff brotha
I absolutely love this game. I listen to the sound track at work to help me focus.
Im so glad more people will finally play this! My favorite game of all time!
I literally finally finished the platinu for this last night its so cool that my favorite youtuber releases a vid on it the day after
Dude, mad props. This game is suuuuuper hard to platinum (at least for me). I think I’ll play it on and off until I get it.
I couldn’t get into this game unfortunately because of the gameplay and traversal
But the art is just phenomenal and it did a lot of things right
Love the intro. Well done, my man.
12:03 great line. Also loved the crucifixion totk line xD
I missed out on all the updates to this game but after completing Blasphemous 2 I can't wait to see what they add
I love that we started with the stats
Right when GS finishes the game is when you complete it... strange things work like that...
Ay, Green Scorpion fan!
I have been waiting for this one to show up here!! Let's Goooo
Great work! Awesome intro.
My man. Finished the game about dozen times cant wait for sequel in two weeks.
Blasphemous was the most epic experience in gaming I ever had.
Been slowly completing blasphemous, always a good thing when I see a completionist video about a game I'm currently working on, didn't even know a sequel was on the way so now I gotta get cracking on this lol
Blasphemous is such an addictive game. I found myself finishing it then jumping right back in. I love metroidvania and the challenge was just right.
