  • Fusion is the plasma process that powers the sun, and is potentially a nearly limitless source of power on earth which, if controlled, can put green electricity on the grid. However, achieving this goal requires controlling the extremely intense plasmas that produce fusion, a hugely difficult problem.
In this video, Dr. Omar Hurricane of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, discusses one approach to achieving fusion, inertial confinement fusion (ICF) wherein the world’s most energetic laser implodes a small pellet containing deuterium and tritium (D-T) to fuse those atoms together and release tremendous energy. Dr. Hurricane shares the many year effort at the National Ignition Facility to successfully demonstrate ICF gain - more energy produced by ICF reactions than laser energy delivered to the pellet, a necessary milestone on the way to fusion power generation.
