The Wasted Potential of LEGO Kingdoms

  • In my opinion, LEGO Kingdoms is the greatest LEGO Castle theme of all time. Between the inclusion of two fantastic factions, great playsets and the creation of Medieval Village-style sets, LEGO Kingdoms brought a lot to LEGO Castle between 2010 and 2012. That being said, it's sudden disappearance in 2012 has bothered me ever since- today we discuss The Wasted Potential of LEGO Kingdoms

    I think that's the problem with modern Lego. They had all these themes that wrapped in kids like Castle and Atlantis. But nowadays, Ninjago and Dreamzzz are some of the only original themes, and with giant storylines to follow, not mentioning Ninjago has had sets on shelves for about 12 years now. They need to bring back smaller themes that are affordable, and like you said don't overstay their welcome.

      I don't understand how can they keep this crappy ninjago for 12 years while castle themes were shut down after 1-2 years. Ninjago has to finally end or Castle won't ever return.

    Kingdoms is nostalgic for me, it was released when they finally opened a LEGO store in my area... and the first set I got from the new store was the Outpost Attack, but I never got more of the theme beyond that. Then it was just gone. There is a rumored medieval village set for next year, and I'm sure it will be a grand one. And it's rumored to finally include the infamous goat again.
    I never knew about the third faction, that blew my mind! Of course, it begs the question of why LEGO included it if the intention was to end the theme there? Strange...

    Kingdoms was my first lego set as a kid. Iirc I was 4 or 5.
    It the was the small set with the knight and his catapult, and the dragon knight with the weapon rack. Kingdoms was soooo gooood.

    05:32 I don’t know. Look at the kingdom theme- it had rival factions, orcs, wizards, trolls. Then look at the later released castle sets which got rid of those things and reduced it down to just two factions plus some dragons. I think it’s pretty clear that it was because of the release of the LOTR/Hobbit sets and the similarities they shared plus having a popular IP has proven to be more popular than just a Lego theme alone. Look at Star Wars compared to the space/Blacktron theme.

    The kingdoms chess set, advent calendar and battle packs are also great. However l feel that the current "revival age", beginning with the medieval blacksmith in 2021 and continuing is a new gold age of lego castle.

    Kingdoms and Fantasy era are my favourite castle sets. I'm kinda leaning more towards Fantasy era, since that theme was capable of providing massive wariety when sticking to same kinds of sets, and therefore if branched out into common folk sssets like farms or market places, would have much greater potential.
    I would argue that Lego should have generic Castle and Space evergreen theme that would just allow them to cycle between different fractions, set ideas and styles as they want, I don't think any kind of story would be even needed here

  • @benparker1822
    @benparker1822 Před 10 měsíci +6

    I'm surprised Lego doesn't do a 'Disney Vault' approach to their lines. It has been 10 to 30 years for the different themes. Many of the sets released at the time are most likely lost to time and damage in any home. Now that enough time has elapsed, nostalgia would probably help drive a desire to reacquire some of those sets or themes for the children of the next generation, instead of trying to come up with something 'new' and 'different'.

  • @keegantripp1245
    @keegantripp1245 Před 9 měsíci +2

    honestly Kingdoms looking back was a good theme and the only one in which my family got multiple sets, the Fantasy Era Castle sets only getting one. Thinking about it and how some of Legos properties are controlled or are tied to companies like Disney, it should be apparent to those in Legos higher ups that they're wasting time, money, and potential on some of the supposed 'Best Selling' Brands. If what we're seeing with Disney is to point to anything, its that some brands have been tainted, and parents are not going to buy their children toys that support certain brands or companies, which in turn will harm Lego. So perhaps with Creator, and the New Lego Castle and Forest Men sets, Lego is dipping their feet back into their own pool to see what works. Now obviously the 400 dollar set will never fly for parents, but if Lego decides to release some smaller sets to test the waters, I think parents will get their kids these new sets. Because the answers are simple: they're not brands, movie licensed, or high expensive legos for fans; they're for the next generation. Built for the next wave of castle/fantasy fans. Because as far as I'm aware, kids are still enjoying fantasy and stuff about knights and dragons.
    If I were a Lego higher up I'd probably would try to get a new line of fantasy era sets up first and foremost. Because that's what kids are still in too so it makes sense from a marketing standpoint to target that which works. It just needs to not look too polished or it won't work like the last sets did. It should also try to use previous factions or just create new ones again, though a reinstall of the dragon theme from the 90s that went hand in hand with the orginal castle should work.

    Kingdoms is probably my favorite castle theme post classic castle. It does capture the magic of the classic themes. While I like most of the trademarked themes, they don't capture the imagination and originality of LEGO's own lines like space and castle

    Kingdoms is the best range of Lego in my opinion, I have every set. I’ve also got a lot of the smaller sets to make bigger setups and mix in city and Star Wars and a pirates of the Caribbean set. (Only using the land models not the mini figs) Just have to find a sealed glass case big enough to set it all up to display in. But I also think that the blacksmith 21325 set also fits in with kingdoms. Who else would agree?

    Kingdoms was fantastic and I'm glad I picked up at least one of every set with a few multiples; I just don't think it sold well at the time as the economy was still recovering from the banking credit crises that started in 2008. I'm content with the classic castle rehashes we are getting for now but I would like to have an evergreen theme where we get more variation of torso and medieval life.

    Ice Planet, 8 sets
    M Tron, 8 sets

    Space police 2, 7 sets
    Spyrius, 6 sets
    Unitron, 4 sets
    Western Cowboys 9 sets
    Western Indians 7 sets
    LEGO has a loooong history of great short lived themes! But on that note, I will agree, Kingdoms was a great theme and should have kept going. I just recently discovered Kingdoms and when I was doing my research on sets from that theme my thought was “why did they stop this theme with so few sets!”

    They've ended it because of wokeism, many people within the LEGO group hate masculanity, wither toxic or not. Also, many of them as many people say aquired an taste for triggering fans. The higher they are on the feminism or LGBTQ+ scale, the higher they like to annoy male fandoms across many entertainment sectors. :^)
    LEGO castle or kingdoms appeal mostely to boys.
    Honestly, many of us reduced or stopped buying too many LEGO sets, unless they are highly creative or nice. Or just buy a set or two from a new theme, we don't go after the full theme, like LEGO Dreamzzz for dxample. Personally I bought two sets only.
    And whatever other themes we buy, many we know modify or remove many of the woke element pushed in the sets. :-)
