It's so funny how things change. I saw Dutch use the kill cone. I helped my Dad as a kid. He took an old broom handle n knocked them out. It causes them to stretch their necks n then he used an axe to remove the head. The old clothes line was a way to hang them on the poles. It was fast n easy. That's how the old farm people did it. Nice to learn there is more than one way to do things. You all are doing great with the sawmill.

That particular sawmill needs a 90 elbow put on the factory water line to make it drip on the front of the blade. The water drips out just slightly too far back and the blade heats up faster, which wears it out faster..
Yep,that contributes to breaking.
Roger Flanigan ~ It's terrific that you're familiar with that particular sawmill model and can offer helpful insights. I wondered about the water reservoir and your comment was really knowledgeable.

@@SawyerRidgeFarm We have the same saw.. I just put a cheap little plastic fish tank elbow on and cut the end off sticking out so it dripped further to the front by just a little. It's also important to have a pretty good rate of flow. ( I was taught to make it drip about as fast as you tap your fingers when you are bored..lol) We also mix just a couple good squirts of dish washing liquid in a 5 gallon bucket for the water. Helps keep the sap off the blade and reduces friction heat.
I think that sawmill has paid fpr itself now with everything you and Jason have used it for. That is pretty cool.

When the time comes you could also put a cone on the opposite side and slightly stagger them ☺
Yes that is exactly right thats why I made it a little wider for later modification
Jacob, put a bucket with water in under the kill cone so the blood goes in the bucket and doesn't congeal. I have seen people use it on their gardens.
When not in use for the poultry you can use it as a hanging drying rack. From the UK x

You all have the kill cone when I was young you just let them flop around on the ground til you scalded them to pluck! Times sure have changed!
My G'pa and uncle never liked the bruised meat from letting them flop around and would stuff them in a gunny sack after the head came off and hang them on the barn wall.
Kill cone is easier and no bruised meat.
My Great Aunt had me help her kill a chicken decades ago for dinner. All she did was grab it by the neck & Break*Wring it before she cut head off. The she scalded, defeathered, & gutted it to cut up & cook.
No expense, a lil Exercise chasing the bird, & good food after all is said n done!!
That Cedar wood sure is pretty. The stand turned out great and the price was right.
When I was younger, I worked at a saw mill.. We had to run water before the cut and air after the cut an we sharpen the blade daily but we also cut wood for 8hrs solid, our boss said the key to cutting wood cool., Even in Machining school, they tought us to keeping tools cool, prevents tool loss also checking the cutting edge sharp helps too 👍

Never waste on any farm. Good Motto. Do it right the 1st time is ideal, best plans have revisions. Good for you on Saw Mill cut a lot wood. Jason may want to keep lots of blades on hand. :) Awesome

They told my husband on the same mill it only is meant to be used 5 hr run time on his woodland mill. His broke and he called the technician bc he noticed his belts were wearing uneven he told him what to do and we couldn't believe the run time on blade wasn't longer. U my want to order some blades long before u need it took ours 2 wks to come in and lots of their stuff is back ordered
That frame would make a great target stand.
Looks really good, Jacob! And free IS a lot better, since 8 ft. cedar 4x4s at Lowes are around 30 bucks each! Kept inside the barn between uses, it'll last for 50 years! You can use it to hang hoses, cords and ropes on while the next flock of birds are growing. 👍🏻❤️📹
You can sharpen the old blade and weld it back together and reuse it. It will last a long time. Could also put cones on both sides. Just put a wedge to tilt them away from each other. Or add a block for a spacer.

When I first saw the stand I thought it would be great for hanging plants, or running vines up the posts, or both? Like an arbor? Also, those 4X4X2" blocks can be made into insect repellents for closets by adding a hook to hang up with. I've seen them for $7 or $8 at target. You refresh the smell by sanding a little. I thought of sachets too. Nothing goes to waste. Next ,I'm Really interested in seeing the garlic and onion braiding.

I don’t know if you watch the you tube channel Justin Rhodes but he made a drying rack for the processed chickens it made the bagging really easy made with PVC kind of like a boot stand.
It looks like your going to have a great setup for those birds.

Very nice! And hey...cedar lasts longer than treated lumber and looks SOOOO much better! Great job! Hubby built us a processing stand..yeah on the can't get treated wood! But we had an old sink (70/30) and just hooked up to garden hose and put in a sprayer...there was a sheet of heavy glass here when we bought the place, so it fit perfect...easy clean/disinfect and the sink sure is nice to have...its taller than one of the plastic tables we used before...I can stand at the right height to remove innards and clean instead of having to bend over...may plan on building a processing stand next!

You can also use your project to hang the rabbits for butcher. Put two long nails through the top board. Just far enough apart to hang their back legs. Sharpen The nails. Makes it easy to pull their skin.. have fun

Such a wonderful resource to have on your land!
We had four cones in one side, you could cut the braces on the cone side out so your not stepping in them or kicking then when stuffing birds in cone! You also gave plenty of room to make a bucket stand underneath the cones to put the heads in along with the drained blood! Stainless steel doesn't rust so it can be left in the elements all the time!
Not trying to be a smartellic, but our kill cone was a kill zone...a stump and an axe! 🐔😁

Always learning on this channel. I like the stand that can be moved around and cones added. Smart concept. Milling your own lumber for the project doesn't get much better than that. Changing the sawblade the first time and it hasn't all been cedar, didn't Jason test it at his place on some hard wood?! The blade breaking could be related to the weak point in the band and if the water wasn't enough, maybe overheated. But you had a replacement and onto the next log. Have a great weekend. The woman that kept us while mama worked, she would hang em on the clothes line upside down and just go down the line with a meat clever. 😁
Yea, need to keep sharp blades. You can send them off to be sharpened, or do your own. You will know when it's time by how hard it gets to cut the wood. You'll get the feel for it.
If the blade gets hot and stretches more than normal, which allows it to flex more, it can break.
You can also tell what boards may warp and which won't by how much they kick out, or up, when they are cut loose from the log. Not sure how cedar does, but hard woods will do that sometimes.

When you purchase more cones, you may want to buy a large one so you can process turkeys. Using your bolt system, you could have three chicken cones and a couple of large cones storing the ones you don't need. I don't know how expensive they are.

Love the concept of the dispatching station. I would put a tub of some type under where the cones are to catch the blood, that way you won't have it enticing predators.
Got a feeling Jacob & Alex already have something in mind for that...doesn't sound like their 1st Kill session & they've got friends they watched or talked to, I'm sure.

Well it's nice now but the wood is still green now too .

You probably already know but just in case... you can have corrosion problems using two different metals. If the nuts and bolts are not stainless as well. Just a thought since your dealing with food processing. Great content. Love your videos. Hubby has made several garden boxes and we love them.

Hi. Consider building a drying rack for your lumber. Maybe use a water seal on this piece where you will be spraying water on it because of the chicken blood. Lesś chance of bacteria growth. Build a veg processing table with a sink that just drains into a bucket for used water, then rewater your plants with it. Less mess in kitchen. Make an outdoor kitchen, use it for processing, cooking n canning big batches of things. All that corn you're growing which has to be processed ( messy job ) quickly after picking to keep its sweetness. Most importantly, your closets lined with your cedar. Water must be running when saw mill blade is running...it cools down the metal and cutting friction that builds up...Great video...my meat birds go to freezer camp on September 20th...Cedar is great to use for those projects since you have the trees...Cheers from Maine
