Something I do for feeding when I’m away is I pre measure the food and put it into a pill container so my neighbor doesn’t have to measure it out and risk over feeding.

When I´m on vacation for more than a couple of days we always have someone feed our Animals including the Fish, I will prepare little cups of Food and put them next to the Aquarium with the right amount of food for each day. Then the caretaker only has to take 1 cup for each Aquarium and drop the prepared food in. This worked for me so far...

But,in hot Asian countries like India, where it's summer most of the year, using an aquarium chiller is really an option for planted tanks.
If the room is big, keeping an ac on 24*7 can be preety expensive.

I keep my house at 20c.. I like it cooler. I am leaving for vacation in a couple of weeks and I bought 7 day pill containers. Each one is filled with the proper amount of food and is sitting at the tank. No way for my friend to overfeed or harm my fishies. The frozen foods only go in two tanks and that he found fun to watch. He doesn't have fish but he does understand that it is important not to overfeed any of the tanks.

i live in a tropical country, i put my aquariums in the middle room without ac, just running some diy computer fan on 3 of them, getting under 26 degrees celsius is somewhat nearly impossible. My tank runs in the 27-29 degrees depending on the weather, i mean putting ac just for the aquarium is just monumentally wasteful on energy and on the wallet. so regularly topping off water is far cry much more convenient than having a stroke from paying the energy bills haha

    • @microcox
      @microcox Před 3 lety

If I understand well you plan to start a tank or add new plants 2 weeks before leaving on vacation: don"t do that, you're gonna have problems (new starts are when most frequent care is needed). Aside from that, Tommy's tip means you can add 3 days' worth of fertiliser, but no more. Its means your plants will starve for the rest of the 2 weeks, but that's better than putting too much fertilizer. Aside from a very good friend ok to come each day, the best option is a dosing pump (you can find simple ones around 50€) and that's what I'll be doing this year.

I'm curious regarding the "Blackout" method that you do when you're away for a week, can someone confirm if this method works work you too? 7 days without light seems quite long for plants to survive especially for high light demanding plants 😅

I think everything will get less colorful as well as the fish, and recover in short time. Just I think, didn't tried.

not that I think cooling your tank with frozen bottles or so are a good idea, does that really stress your fish? I mean rivers have also very different temperature zones that are clearly separeted.

If the tank is left at rest, as told in the last part of the video, for around 7 days, the fishes won't starve?

You'll still need to feed the fish!

    • @nathanielwise508

depends on their size. tiny species need feeding every other day at the most, but many larger fish can go for a week or even two without experiencing serious harm

High temperatures, and a lot of evaporation.

@@GreenAquaShop Really, we only have more than 40ºC for a week, but the rest of the summer we are 33-35ºC...or more.
You can keep the aquarium at 26ºC with fans, but you have to refill a lot of water and need a reservoir.

I actually did the trick with the ice last sommer. 1liter bottle per 20+liter tank. So much bigger proportion than shown here.. Worked perfect, every fish survived without any issue. Helps to cool down in 1-2 degrees. Better than 27, as in the room....

I'm really disappointed that no automatic feeder allows adjusting the amount low enough for small/underpopulated tanks. This has been a problem for me since forever, and I struggle to understand why nobody is building an adequate feeder. Aren't nano tanks a thing?
