It honestly kinda disgusts me how little people seem to care about artist’s rights to their work these days
I really, really hope that Breyer comes to some kind of positive agreement with the original artist of the wolf designs. Breyer will lose a lot of my respect if they don't take this kind of situation seriously and it would set a really bad example that copying or heavily refrencing another artist's original work and mass producing it for profit is "ok."

Just releasing the werewolf horse without resolving anything would be the worst move Breyer could make. Original artist could absolutely sue for the profits
This video came up in my recommended, i dont collect breyers and ive never seen your videos before, but i felt the need to say this. As soon as you put a picture of the Beowolf model up, i IMMEDIATELY recognized the art. I used to follow that artist on devientart in the 2000’s and it is definitely recognizable as a copy of their art. “Tribal style” wolf art is definitely a thing, but these specific pieces and style are recognizable even to someone who hasn’t looked at that artists art in well over 10+ years.
Unfortunately probably nothing will come of it since the life of an artist sucks and the majority of people still belittle it as a genuine job and unique craft (especially in a world where AI and art theft are so normalized), but i do hope the original artist gets something from the brand, even in private. The main offender is of the secondary breyer designer who “designed” the Beowulf model, they knew that they were copying and did it anyway.
The lady who is being credited with the design of Beowulf did a video workshop for WinterFest & in the video she says she uses clipart when creating her models. Some clipart is protected by copyright but not all. It could be that a clipart site took the wolf images from Deviant Art & posted them on their site, where the designer saw them & didn’t realize they were copyright protected.
The collector club forum is crazy with the art theft situation! Why breyer!? 😫

It’s so refreshing to see someone who can comment about a touchy issue while being pragmatic and respectful. That’s why I love you Meg! 💖 The design is scary similar, so I can see why some people are concerned. At the same time, Breyer could have bought the rights to the design. I’ll hold off on buying this model until I know if copyright infringement was at play, but I agree that we ought to refrain from conjecture and drama on the issue until we learn exactly what happened.
As for the Traditional regular run releases for this year, I’m fairly pleased with them. Although I’m not the biggest fan of the Georg and Nikolas molds, I like their coat colors quite a bit, so I see myself getting them. I am also leaning towards getting Norwich since I have a Norwich Terrier, and the model looks so much like her! 😆 Atlanta is on a nice mold and has beautiful shading, so she may join my “herd” at some point.
the problem with this beowulf is that style of artwork doesn't not belong to one person. I have been doing that style/likness like the artist here since I was 14 and now 60 years old as well as all the thousands who also do this style of artwork. it would be hard to bring it to court unless it was a copy of the artist's work. this is one of island, native indigenous art style.
I won't buy another Breyer until this is properly sorted out. As an artist this brazen theft infuriates me.

Milton was the first Breyer I bought myself too! (that said I still probably won't get the Christmas horse, but the bells are cute)
I was hoping we would get the Ideal Series Paint next. The POA mold choice isn't a favorite for me but when I did a closer look at his face I liked him better.

I was really disappointed by the werewolf Breyer design. Breyer says, no shit, that if you submit artwork to them that artwork becomes their property. So if if this lady didn't get paid, the disclaimer is on their website. It's pretty cut throat, and kind of predatory. I was going to submit a design, and Breyer's customer service was super rude about how to do it, and then led me to the disclaimer on the website. It was on my life bucket list to submit to them, and then it was like "Oh, wait, not, I'm not doing this."
Never meet your heroes. Plastic horses are Cthulu. I'm going to do some designs for some alternative Breyer werewolves in my IG, cause Beowulf was super disappointing.
They said the original artist was on Deviant art so that makes sense then. Deviant art literally has a clause in their TOS when you sign up that says Deviant art can sell your art to other companies with out your permission when you post them on their website. Someone posted the screenshot of that clause on Tumblr which is where I saw it. There was a big thing where people's art was being used on other sites and when they asked them to take it down the other site said they bought the rights to it from Deviant art. People were not happy in the comments let me tell you
If you’re talking about the thread regarding the artist who’s artwork was being used for Hot Topic merch, that artist did respond and state that when they gave the image to BOOM! Studios, they signed a document essentially giving Cartoon Network all rights to the image, so the issue didn’t come from DeviantArt themselves.
More than happy to do a deep-dive on this though! I will agree, the section of DeviantArt’s TOS lots of people refer to is VERY confusing and contradictory to other parts of their TOS.
I think the only horse I'm going to buy this year (other than premiere club) is Neptune.
all of the 2024 RRs are passes for me 💀 except the christmas horse, I always get those. kind of disappointed but that’s ok, I’ll just have more money for breyerfest lmao

I think people need to get the F* over Beowulf. The art is very similar, but it is not THE SAME. Tribal wolf art pretty much all looks the same. it is not a very original concept or design.
I say this as an artist, and someone who isn’t going to be purchasing the model. I just think the drama is dumb af.
