Because it's helping people who are going to be making the most money in this country in the future. It's ridiculous this money should be going to the true bottom level people. You should honor your own debts anyways but if you're going to give free money give it to the people that need it the most

Most students at University are females anyway, but most tax payers are males.
I'm not mad about people getting "free" education. I'm not even mad about how this is "unfair". What does upset me, is this is literally kicking the can down the road and we will be in the exact same scenario or worse in 5-10 years. What message does this send to lenders and schools? Do you think higher education will be less, or more expensive?
Well let's see- they said if you bought an electric vehicle you would get $7,500 tax rebate. Auto companies just announced that the cost of the batteries was higher than they thought and raised the price of the cars $8,500. So I'm sure the colleges will follow suit.
$10k is not going to make that much difference. Later interest rates are going to be raised, more student loans will be handed out, and everything will be back to normal. There is no such thing as a free education, someone is going to have to bear the burden.

We could just have college be free at the point of service. This loan system serves the same role as insurance, middle men. They are predatory methods aimed squarely at middle and low income students/families.

I had $7k left to pay. Was working on it. So of course it's some weight off my shoulders. I was working on it though! 😆
Your payments will begin again in January and be reduced by a % and up to 10k. It reduces monthly payments by a small % that on average will save 1k a year. It’s not a 10k wipeout

Sounds like a cater to the haters to me. 300B to student debt relief has never been tried before. 300B to international defense reoccurs annually and it has no impact whatsoever on relieving the economic burdens on American families🤷🏾♂️

I will never let a man who has had not one but TWO bankruptcies ever make me feel bad about having my student loans forgiven. He didn’t pay his creditors why should we? If it’s “the right thing to do” shouldn’t he reach out to the people he screwed over in bankruptcy and pay them now? He certainly has the means to do it unlike most Americans
Having other people forgiven of 10k in student debt doesnt make me mad - im happy for them and wish I had that for me when I was younger. I agree its mainly a political move but its also a lot of help for a lot of people.

I paid off my student loans…and was fortunate to be able to buy a house when they were much more accessible. But times have changed…I support student loan forgiveness because it’s good for the economy and the country. Young people will be able to start businesses, buy a first home…etc..

I also took out a mortgage and signed on the dotted line knowing I had the RESPONSIBILITY to pay it in full just like a person signs for a student loan. So for my troubles now I am going to pay for someone else's part of their student loan?

What about the accountability of previous generation adults pushing children to take out massive loans and promising them they will make 100k+ when they graduated. Only to experience most of their adult lives in a recession and increase the loans by 100% from interest. Since it was nearly impossible to get a living wage when they graduated.
What about the trillions they forgave to the big businesses? So you're ok with tax payers helping massive corporations but not ok with them helping regular people who are working as hard as they can?

Hey, as one American to another. Thank you for helping me pay off my the rest of my student loans thar I hadn't paid off already. I wish I had a check for all the money that I spent paying them back as well. I also wish I took out a little more and through it into investments. But hindsight is 20/20. And I have to live by principle instead of emotion. But thank you again. I sincerely appreciate your help.

Well it’s not that simple. Payments restart January 2023 and the payments are only going to save on average 1k per year. Basically you are just get a discounted monthly payment that over 10 years will be 10k. The whole thing is ridiculous

However, giving everyone a leg up that still has this debt is okay.

It’s only 10k, what’s that to the average person with student loan debt? I mean you could borrow that in just one semester. I paid my student loans off by 2017. Thankful I didn’t wait. P.s it was more than the 10k they’re forgiving.

I don’t feel this is a life changing amount. I paid mine off in 2020 and happy I did. For some people it is life changing so it’s good for them.
