I am an American.. Blue eyes in the orient... And I lived in Thailand for years.. This is one of the wonderful true street foods you can get almost anywhere in Thailand. I absolutely loved it.. I bought it at least once a week, if not more...! The bones of the fish just fall away, the flavor of the fish is preserved perfectly, not salt taste at all.. The sauces and fresh veggies make it a great 'share' experience. The only problem is:... I can't get it here, in the US... Sad but true...!

It's great to hear about your love for Thai street food! Recreating the experience at home or finding similar dishes at local Thai restaurants could be a fun way to reminisce. Thanks for sharing your culinary adventures! 🙂

U can substitute the fish with other type and barbecue / grill yourself. Sauces can be modified to your own liking . Plenty of sauce recipes on YT. Or get the ready made ones at the Asian grocers.

The salt crust on the outside of the fish may look offputting but underneath the meat is moist, tender, and flaky. I had it on my last trip to Bangkok last November, and I highly recommend it!

I loved the pla pao, which we had a few times (along with kor moo yang, grilled large prawns, grilled & fried pork intestines and Sing(ha) Beer, with durian and mangosteen for dessert) from a large Bangkok street food vendor stall and its plastic stool, metal folding table and hanging light bulbs sidewalk restaurant on Phaya Thai Road near Asia Hotel and the Ratchathewi BTS station. We also had it at the Khlong Lad Mayom floating market. One of my favorite Thai street food dishes! Aroi mak mak/saep lai der!

    • @somethingscookingasia

Salt quantity can vary between restaurants. Since the fish cooks for just 13 minutes, the heavy rub is more for presentation than flavor. Thanks for watching Phillip 😊🙏
