  • Talk’s Alex Phillips is joined by former police officer Harry Miller and former Conservative special adviser Charlie Rowley to discuss Keir Starmer’s commitment to tackling shoplifting offences under £200 in the King’s Speech.
A new bill aims to reverse a 2014 “charter” where theft of products under £200 is “low value”, according to The Telegraph.
The Prime Minister described other new laws as “the down payment” on the change his Government is seeking to deliver.

Rudy Giuliani, when he was Mayor in New York, introduced the broken window theory, which targeted what was considered low level crime, which then prevented perpetrators moving on to greater criminal activity. Sadly subsequent Mayors have allowed it to relapse, and the evidence is there for all to see.

Shops need to be redesigned so everything is behind the counter, add reinforced glass to the counters, like off licences with a box to move goods through.

Like in Eastern Europe. I was staggered when visiting Romania and Ukraine in the early 2000's to see all shops the goods were behind the counter. A cashier took your goods from retails assistants, you paid and got your goods. This was the practice every where. I did not understand why. Now i know but never imagined it could happen in my Britain.

The people that shoplift near me are all drug addicts - if people didn't buy it they wouldn't nick it, but then the people that buy it are often on the breadline. Comes down to there being a lack of opportunity and the correct support services for people if you ask me.
