    THANK YOU FIL!!! 😎😍🤩
I just KNEW you would be blown away by this woman and her incredible talents! I kid you not, she reduced me to tears for about the first dozen times I listened to her perform this song! And I'm 62! I have listened to her sing various songs hundreds of times and she just does not grow old or get boring. Words kind of fail me in trying to describe how great a singer she is, and I was actually despairing that you would never get around to her because you get so many people asking for reactions to various artists and I'm sure most of them say the same thing as I did: "This singer is the best in the world!" It made me want to catch a flight from Calgary to London and make you watch her! (I wouldn't do that but you know what I mean, eh?)
The following is a little biography I put together about So Hyang (pronounced So hYong like song with a little h at the beginning) just to give you a little bit of the background to this incredible woman.
    ****************
We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she's from another planet or perhaps an angel come down from Heaven. We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. She does all the musical arrangements herself, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all travelled to Asia to work with her.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of "You Raise Me Up" before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV. czcams.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/video.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 42 on April 5, though in Korean culture she would be 43 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 35 when she sang this version of "Arirang Alone." czcams.com/video/zFyndK9VOCk/video.html (You will want to cover this one, too, Fil! It is an ancient Korean folk song that has become their unofficial national anthem. She hits an absolute grand slam here Fil!!!)
She decided to enter a televised singing contest called "King of the Masked Singers" in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on CZcams. Apparently Oprah Winfrey saw her on CZcams and showed her to David Foster, who then contacted her and went to Japan in order to work together. She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." So she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever. What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!
And also, please react to her version of "The Power of Love": czcams.com/video/LrNkVRrK7_I/video.html
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being! She is beautiful both inside and out--and so humble!
Here's an English language interview with her that I'm sure you will enjoy: czcams.com/video/N2u_pmoWxj8/video.html Her English is perfect when she sings and almost perfect when she is doing interviews. OK, I'll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang says that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she has never gone above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is a greater than 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Here it is: czcams.com/video/VnPAkryrygQ/video.html
Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published novelist and a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” And she sang the Moana part in the Korean release of the Disney movie.

There are many K-pop stars in Korea, but there are many other great singers as well besides idol groups like BTS, Black Pink. Among them, there is a world class singer named Sohyang. She is considered one of the best vocalists in the world by many vocal coaches and singers all over the world. I hope you listen to her song once again. This was sohyang's own arrangement of this song, she always does the arrangements for the songs she performs. Michael Bolton did watch her on this show but it was another episode, like you rightly said,it was michael bolton week but she sang 'lean on me' on that episode as he had himself performed that song, hence MB week!!! I cant recall at this moment what the title of the episode that included 'bridge over troubled water' was, I think it was something to do with american songwriters. So hyang is know as: the queen of mix voice, master of the dynamic build, crystal clear cut glass tone,a very high mix, queen of Bb5( she obviously goes higher but this note is a real sweet spot for her) queen of emotion & story telling, amongst many other things.you must read her back story & it will at least go some way to explaining why she's not famous all over the world, I mean she's more than good enough!!

Her range is actually pretty amazing like you said. She has a consistent supported range (tessitura of about 3 1/2 octaves) a demonstrated range in songs of 4 octaves. Although she can sing outside of that probably over 4 1/2 octaves. She said she can sing up to a Eflat 7.
Alot of talent, but even more impressive is the developed skill and mastery of of her voice. She changes the arrangement of every song she performs. Songs often will change tempo and style and what was a classical, soul or gospel song turns into an R&B or even rock song .. and often back again.
One of the best singers in the world in my opinion.

Loved your breakdown! the more knowledgeable and in-depth an analysis is, the more appreciation So Hyang gets. There’s a reason she is one of the, if not, the top most reacted vocalist in all of youtube. And that is despite being a non-mainstream artist, a Korean Gospel singer which has a very niche minority audience even in her home country. She isn’t active on any social media either, not even a youtube channel. No spotify, nothing.
So Hyang is the very definition of artists who have remained dedicated to their craft for decades, and over time earned themselves a solid following of not just fans but people who are similarly passionate about what they’re into.
I don’t care who you are or where you’re from but if you can’t respect someone like that, then you’re a disgrace to not just yourself but every single hobby and profession you’ve ever been a part of. Its as simple as that coz its just that obvious.
Btw you might be interested in So Hyang’s latest performance of “I will always love you” popularised by Whitney Houston and “If I ain’t got you” by Alicia Keys. Here’s the links. There’s a whole list if you search “So Hyang beginagain”

Immortal Songs is not a talent show. It invites established singers (usually stars in their genre - pop, traditional, rock, classical, jazz, CCM etc.) who are paid for their appearance on a particular themed episode (this one was "English Songs Koreans love"). The live audience votes on the performances to make it more interesting. There are no prizes or advancement to a subsequent round - only bragging rights. Production quality is top notch. There are often several amazing performances on each show. She sang her own arrangement of "Lean on Me" on the Michael Bolton special.

For those who like comfortable and mellow styles of music, Sohyang's performance may be a little burdensome. But watching her other performances might change your mind. Because she sings in a different style each time depending on thecharacteristics and atmosphere of the given stage.
One thing for sure is that she is unrivaled in vocal technique

As much as I appreciate the immense talent and training that these sort of "diva" level vocalists possess, I'm often put off by their tendency to show off with all sorts of complicated runs and other theatrics where it's not warranted, like in every song... One of the things I love about Sohyang is that she knows when NOT to do that, and in fact rarely does. So reading some of the comments, I'm a little weirded out because a few of them are criticising her for exactly that...which is weird. There are only a couple of songs where she goes off, and those particular songs (which a lot of people love and seem to recommend to reactors) are my least favourite from her. Thankfully, for me, they are few and far between, but everyone who CAN, has to show off SOMETIMES, just not ALL the time. As for this one, I mean, this is definitely a masterclass vocal performance, but I really don't think she oversang it at all, not even close. It was perfect. But I don't know, maybe some people have cloth ears. Or maybe I do. Life is weird. I enjoyed your analysis, too bad it got blocked, but I'l glad you worked your way around it and got your thoughts out for us to appreciate.

Her vocal ability is amazing.. loaded with emotional impact. Makes me worry that she might damage her voice though. I'm not generally attracted to singers who use exaggerated vocal gymnastics (they usually sound like all technique and not much real passion) but based on this performance I think Sohyang does it better than anyone and with a sincere feeling for the lyrics. I hope she gets all the fame that she deserves - and doesn't have to do every song at warp level like this one. Really, that's akin to the exertion put out in the Ali / Frazier fights. (I think I had a heart arrhythmia just listening to it)! I alternately like the simple, weary sound of Paul Simon's understated version too. They are both masterpieces.

To soothe your concern, Sohyang sings with impeccable and healthy techniques. She has been singing for more than 20+ years, and at the tender age of 43, she is as good as ever, and some consider that she has even better control nowadays. I believe she did this performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water around the age of 37.

The performance so overwhelms the song I could barely tell there was anything meaningful there. Yes, it's technically astounding, but sometimes it's the strain in the voice that helps to convey the meaning. Singers are defined as much by their limitations as their abilities. I watched a few more of her videos just for comparison, and it's certainly better if I'm not so familiar with the original song, and there's more to her talent than just the ability to deliver production line overwrought show stoppers.
