  • German Scientists Discover Plastic-Eating Fungi
Scientists in Germany have discovered fungi that can eat plastic when there are no other carbon sources available. Out of 18 fungal strains tested, four were particularly effective at consuming plastics. These fungi showed a strong ability to degrade polyurethane, a type of plastic found in construction foam. However, they took longer to break down polyethene, which is used in plastic bags and packaging. The fungi struggled most with microplastics from tyres, mainly due to the presence of heavy metals and other additives. While these findings are promising, scientists caution that using fungi alone won't solve the global plastic problem, as their ability to degrade plastic depends on specific conditions like temperature and nutrient availability.

Where will the excess fungus generated from eating the plastic go? How will it fit into the world’s ecosystem?

Good, maybe this is a start to fixing the plastic problem on earth. Im curios what remains after it eats the plastic...

It’s not as if there wasn’t life before plastics. Other than sterile benefits in the medical field, it seems wearisome and daunting from beginning to end.

This morning while I was fitting the leaking valve of my toilet tank I found plastic, old plastic washer disintegrated turning into soft gell. Is this due to fungus.

Most country's don't even drink water they addicted to coke and other soft drinks. Plastic is more convenient for these big industries. Coke even sponsors green green earth event, it shows how messed up things are. In the 90s our teacher taught us about the dangers of plastic bottles, I never used them only use glass and steel bottle, Even my lunch boxes were made from stainless steel
