My son who is now 6 had severe colic. He was born 3 weeks early so his digestive system wasn't quite ready for him to be in the real world. I tried elimination diets, medications, holistic methods. At one point I was only eating chicken and rice .Even chocolate was bad. There's an enzyme in it that babies can't digest. Greens can cause reflux and gas as well. I eventually was so exhausted that I couldn't produce enough to nurse him anymore. He ended up being put on allimentum which is a formula where the proteins and enzymes are broken down making it easier for them to digest. He was essentially allergic to my milk. It killed me that I was basically the cause for his pain, but seeing him start to thrive after was pretty life changing. It sucks. It's terrifying. But you're still actively trying to help him. That's what counts.

Same with my twin neices. My sister, per neonatal Dr's. advice, once they came home, would have us carry them with their legs tucked in (legs bent, knees to stomach) and they seemed to calm down a bit. Also gentle, but firm tummy rubs in a circular, counter clockwise motion.
Also, my other niece had hip alignment issues & would squeal cry in pain. She ended up having to wear a little brace type thing for a month or 2, which was tough, but she didn't cry as much after that, the painful cry i mean.

*Sounds really reallllly random, but have you asked the doctor to check his sphincter muscle? Sometimes babies have a super suuuuuper tight sphincter muscle so any pooping, passing gas or indigestion, is very painful. You can check the theory by putting the tip of a thermometer in their bum and see if he relaxes. Sounds weird as hell, but that is actually a HUGE CAUSE of colic that many dont talk about. Stretching the area out with a glove and vaseline can really help.*
*The technical term for it is: anal stenosis*

Have you tried giving him probiotics? My sister is a doctor - her son had colic, gas & severe constipation, so she put him on probiotics (mixes it with his morning milk) & it definitely helped him feel a lot more comfortable & regulated his digestion. You should research it. Mind you, probiotics are natural & safe.

One thing that struck me hard in this video is your unbridled passion and love for caring for Flynn and making sure he's happy and healthy. Far too often we see news stories, videos, etc, of people and the horrid things they've done to their kids or newborns. Even just going out in public, I see so many parents that just "couldn't be bothered" by their child's needs or putting all sorts of things first. I was really touched to see how much passion you have for him and how much drive you have to make sure he's happy and healthy. Keep that drive and focus... It's part of you, and it will help him more than you know. It will also grow into a great bond between you two as he grows, giving him comfort and safety just by being near you. To me, this is a sign of being an amazing first mom.

Colic is awful, I am thankful to god that my son never went through that but I know a lot of women who have had babies with colic and it is horrendous. Maybe he's not tolerating your milk? Nothing to do with you but maybe there's a formula that would be easier on his stomach? Some babies are lactose intolerant and that causes severe pain for them. The fact he has reflux too will be making it even worse for him, poor thing. You are doing the best thing by trying everything you can, but definitely start with maybe changing his milk? I know it's not ideal as I know you love to breast feed but it could be the lactose reacting in his belly. Take comfort in knowing you're doing the best you can and you're not alone xx

Please like this so Colleen can see this information! Colleen, please join this group on FB - Breastfeeding Mums with Allergic and Food Intolerant Babies Australia. The mums in this group have been/are going through this exact thing, and can help you and Flynn. They have all dealt with doctors and specialists who say nothing is wrong, and they have had to fight and do their own research/trials to help their babies. Colic is a SYMPTOM, not a condition. Your mumma instincts are right in that there is more to this.
In case you're not aware already, if you're already cutting out dairy, you should also cut out soy (which is way harder than dairy as it's in EVERYTHING) as their proteins are very similar, and bubs with CMPI/CMPA often react to both. It can also take up to 6 weeks to get all the dairy proteins out of your body, so please stick with it.
The group is wonderful for support, and the admins and members just genuinely want to help other struggling mums and babies, as the medical industry are severly lacking with knowledge on this.
Hang in there, you're doing the best you can for him with the information you have. Keep fighting for him and things WILL get better soon x

That's another reason why switching bub over to a dairy free formula isn't always a good option. I'm so glad you figured it out, and that you stuck with the elimination diet, as it can be too much for a lot of new mum's and they just listen to their doctors and poor bub still has to suffer, just in other ways - like eczema, chronic constipation, mucous in the poo...

So sometimes doing a elimination diet, and seeing if it’s a certain food the mom is eating, and keeping a food journal can be really beneficial.

Colleen, I pinky promise you so much that once he starts solid food his reflux will ease. All three of my babies had reflux and it’s so harsh for them! The cry is awful! A lot of people don’t realise how painful reflux is! Is burning, gnawing, it affects their little tummies. Poor Flynn. 😭 YOUR DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT!! All of my three babies screamed in pain, it’s awful!! Just keep searching for something that could help, to be honest though nothing really helped apart from not jiggling them around as this causes the acid to rumble around in his tummy. Also what he allready doing! Keeping him upright ect.
I promise you solid food will save the day!! Just remind yourself he will get through this and so will u!

Bloody scream. And i could not do anything but hold him and cry...which he could feel my stress and would only make him more upset. I wish i could give you some advice or tips or words of encouragement...but i can not. I remember feeling helpless just as you are though...you are not alone. My babies were colic. We survived with probiotics, meds, hypoallergenic formula after my breastmilk kept upsetting her so I had to switch (even after colic diet). We used RTF similac alimentum (don’t get powdered stuff). As sad as it was the alimentum helped the most. AND it did go away at 4 months. I have colic PTSD. My babies also survive don gallons of gripe water and oval gas drops, baths twice a day.....phew it was rough. ALSO REALLY NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO WAKE TIMES. It’s so hard he is over tired. Babies cry and sleep less the less sleep they have. You need to get his sleep on track, every 90 min he should nap. Throw him in a stretchy wrap and bounce. It’s a temp fix but it will get his sleep back on track.

She smiled and was happy and didn’t cry but at “normal” times so my sister let it go another day and she stayed happy but my sister breastfeed again and within the hour she began to scream in pain again so after that she never breastfeed again and we never had a problem

I can only imagine how many tips/comments you are getting - we went through colic with my second daughter and tried EVERYTHING (Including a severe diet for myself). I finally figured out that it was an imbalance in my hind milk/foremilk. I wasn't producing enough fatty milk, so even though her diapers were full and she seemed to be getting enough, the balance was causing distress and leaving her hungry. We switched to an organic formula while I tried to adjust my breastmilk and she was happy over night. Seriously over night she started sleeping, was happy and gained weight. I hope you find what it is that is upsetting him and I wish you the very best of luck and love because I know how distressing it is. xo

I think it would be good for you to go to a chiropractor because when baby's have colic they are very gassy and the fart can get stuck and that's very painful but the chiropractor can get rid of that

My daughter's acid reflux was helped by a chiro! Cutting dairy out of my diet was crucial too. I totally agree!

When I was little, I had colic too. What my mom would do was put a little blanket on top of the washing machine and lay me there. The movement of it would help get the gases out of my intestines and I would stop hurting. It’s not a permanent solution, but it stops it for a while. I hope this helps ❤️

Please remember from another mom that even vloggers are usually posting their highlight reel. One thing I like about you is your willingness to be real about what being a mom is like for you, which, by the way, is different for EVERYONE. Trust your instincts, you are his mom. ❤️ I think seeking a second opinion is definitely a good idea. Please keep us updated, you've got a corner of the internet rooting for you and your little family!

Colleen, has anyone suggested Pyloric stenosis? It’s a condition that causes babies especially boys to spit up a lot. Like projectile spit up. But can cause babies to be very very colicky. It’s fixed with a simple surgery. Please look it up. When you said his cry was different like he was in pain and that he has reflux, this is the first thing I thought of. Praying for you mama. This mom thing is rough. You’re doing a great job by trusting your gut. ❤️

Also check into pediatric chiropractors. That has helped colicky babies.

Yes, this! Most common in first born sons. My brother had it. Should be simple to identify once you know what you’re looking for and a relatively easy fix, considering.

One of my friends breastfeeds her babe with acid reflux - she had to cut out dairy, soy, and beef. I’m sure you’ve eliminated a lot, so just remember if you can’t breastfeed him that there is absolutely nothing wrong with formula if it helps him feel better. I struggled with weaning my daughter off of breast milk to formula/bottle. It broke my heart. Like I failed. But she did better with a bottle.
