    It’s been a long time coming, but Polestar’s mission to make the electric car world a more stylish and sustainable place takes another step forward with the new Polestar 3. Having dipped a toe in the water with the plug-in hybrid Polestar 1, gone fully electric with the 2020 Polestar 2, Volvo’s all-electric, design-savvy spin-off will launch its flagship model later this year. Designed with the lucrative (and vast) American market in mind, Polestar is gunning for rivals such as the Tesla Model X and BMW iX.
    Here’s the deal: the Polestar 3 is a big car. At 4,900mm long and 1,614mm tall, the 3 is 136mm shorter than the behemoth Tesla Model X and just 53mm shorter than a BMW iX. It’s also a heavy car, tipping the scales at up to 2,670kg.
    However, despite being a large SUV, the Polestar 3 has been designed to be as aero-friendly as possible. The roofline is almost estate-like in its flatness, while the front end features a unique aero wing integrated into the bonnet. A second aero wing is integrated into the rear spoiler, while rear aero blades on the bumper ensure that the Polestar 3 is as slippery as possible.
    The Polestar 3 launches with a big 107kWh battery pack (usable) as standard, which, according to Polestar, can deliver a driving range of up to 379 miles on the WLTP cycle.
    The pack, which sits beneath the floor and runs at 400 volts, features a prismatic cell design housed in a protective aluminium case with boron steel reinforcement and liquid cooling. A heat pump is included as standard and utilises ambient heat for climate and battery pre-conditioning. The Polestar 3 is also equipped for bidirectional charging, enabling future potential for vehicle-to-grid and plug-and-charge capabilities.
    In terms of charging, Polestar claims that the 3 can DC rapid charge at speeds of up to 250kW, which makes it one of the fastest charging electric cars on the market. As a result, the 3 should be able to charge from 10-80% in around 30 minutes - adding just over 265 miles of range in the process. Based on these figures, the Polestar 3 will be able to add 100 miles of range in a whisker over 10 minutes when connected to a 350kW rapid charger. AC charging peaks at 11kW, which is slightly disappointing given that many of Polestar’s rivals are now offering 22kW AC onboard chargers.
    Join Tom as he takes the new Polestar 3 out on the road for the first time. Has Polestar built a winner? Let us know in the comments below.

    Hi, I like the review & your style - not super hyped, calm, giving the facts. A few points from me on things that could be improved going forward: I'm not a native English speaker, sometimes when you say too many figures quickly, it gets lost. Perhaps including a post-processing graphics on the screen (range, price, consumption, ..) whenever you mention them? Secondly, the sound seems to be low; the friggin adverts scream at me whenever they pop up, because I have to bring the volume up.
    On the car itself: I like the interior. And I'm with you, why the hell do they put those idiotic stickers everywhere? Why on the seats? I don't care if it's recycled or not - or better put I mildly care while spec-ing the car, not after - and I don't need to be reminded of the fact for perpetuity. I'm not paying 79k to push your company's ESR BS, Polestar! And, sadly, the car is too late. I was really excited about it when they unveiled it, but the price is totally out and there's now better alternatives; not to mention Polestar's struggles - will the company survive? Will my warranty stand? I think I'll go for a hybrid this time around and in two years time I'll be back to pick this or the Q6 up for about 40% of it's current price.

      BTW, don't knock the ICE/EV platform. They are monocoque construction, rather than skateboard like EV only platforms. My guess is that in 10 to 15 years the monocoque will still feel solid while the skateboard will be a bit loose and full of rattles. Cars used to be chassis frame and bodywork added (very similar to EV skateboard) but went to a better construction a few decades back.

      That's silly. Sorry, but where it is built doesn't matter. They're going to build them in the USA too and then in Belgium, but they won't be any better built than the one built in China. You're paying for engineering, sophistication, a company that has decades of sports tuning under their belt plust they have all of the safety and build quality of Volvo because they're an offshoot of Volvo. Ex-Volvo designers, ex-Volvo engineers, ex-Volvo programmers. This is not a $50,000 car. The Polestar 4 isn't even $50,000. That is way too low for a car of this caliber and sophistication. In fact the Polestar 2 tops off at $50,000 and that's how much a car like the Toyota Crown costs.

    I don't understand why so many people in the UK care about one pedal driving. Here in America nobody seems to care. I prefer a reliable adaptive cruise system so I can do ZERO pedal driving. 90%+ of the time my routine is to brake to start the car while using my thumb to turn off the lane keep assist, set the speed and adjust from the steering wheel without touching the pedals again until I arrive at my destination. My last three cars could go to a complete stop and back up to speed on their own. Why would I or anyone prefer one pedal driving to that?

    • @RavzzG
      @RavzzG Před 18 dny +2

      It's likely to do with the road layouts. In the UK we have bendy A roads, where there is a lot of speed fluctuation when driving on an open road, so when driving on these roads, it can be fun to modulate the speed manually (EV or ICE).
      Compared to the US, which is mostly a grid layout, so you tend to have stable speeds in a straight line.
