Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.
After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
Packed with thrilling and spectacular fight and chase scenes, Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and his screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World).

There are rarely any Indian/South Asian leads in North American films. If there is, they play roles such as the comedic sidekick or a computer hacker as an example. I’m so happy that there’s someone South Asian kids and also adults can look up to that represents them in this space. Hoping this movie impresses and there’s more opportunities for Asian people in general in North American media.

Irfan did some wonderful roles when he was around.
This film was an absolute BANGER. Easily more badass even than John Wick and because it turned to the best inspiration action and revenge cinema has ever produced - Ong Bak, Raid Redemption, Oldboy, I Saw The Devil - yet it also had layers of culture more rich than even those films.
Monkey Man is something special. Easily the new standard of a film experience I'd call truly "Primal".
Dev Patel is a LEGEND
I felt the same when I was younger. I ran from my culture.... but now I embrace it. Never knew we had such rich history and culture.
