    I understand that I'm missing the point by saying this, but the cost of the initial set up, the seeds, the fertilizer, the plastic bottles, the compost and everything completely outweighs the cost of a few cauliflower.
    I suppose if you are completely recycling everything and you use this system multiple times then it is more cost effective.

      The egg shells are for slugs or some beetles. Egg shells take a long time to break down to add any calcium unless you crush them real fine.

      You don't have to cut the broccoli like that. I don't know why they distroyed the whole plant. If you just cut off the brocci parts the plants with sprout 4 more from the sides and keep doing that every time you cat a broccoli off, all summer. Plus the leaves are edible and highly nutritious,he just throw all that away! I was deviated!!!

    I save all the broccoli stems. I peel them with a potato peeler and cut in to 1/4inch chunks. blanch for 3 min in hot water. Strain and cook with olive oil, garlic and salt for about 2-3 mins. You will thanks me

    Gah, love things like this. Grew up learning horticulture and whatnot in high school and college, great experience.
    Ya know, in the apocalypse, this is what will matter. Having the knowledge and applicable skills of agriculture and plant husbandry. Not how many IG followers one has. 😔

    Why not grow few at every 2 weeks interval to get constant supply throughout the season, rather growing and harvesting in bulk and that's the end.

    The leaves are edible too...
    The heads grow in the center of a ruffle of large green leaves. All of these parts or not only edible, they are delicious and highly nutritious. Some eaters (including this one) actually prefer the stalks and leaves of broccoli and cauliflower plants to the more commonly eaten head.
