It is so Erie hearing him say "it would be real scary if I couldn't get up" (around 1:50) and thats just what happened 10 years later !!! Very sad ! We miss you riding Wayne
Yeah, there wasn’t much runoff at all. I watched Eddie Lawson crash in turn 2 of the old circuit on his KR250 in 81 or 82 and he went through the hay bales and directly into the embankment behind it, and you could feel the thud! He was lucky to survive that one.
I took Keith Codes school on the original track on a GPz550 . Did not know that cresting the start/finish line was pretty much a blind entrance to turn one. Not a big deal on the old track but the modified hairpin turn one must be scary as hell!
that was worth watching for a number of reasons.........fun trips around Laguna Seca in the 80's , nice to hear Rainey tellin' about stuff, and good helicopter piloting and filming, and really good guitar at the end !.................wb
I was too young to watch and appreciate the skill of this man. But in later years I've tried to watch all his races along with Schwantz and McKenzie and Mcelnea. Glorious times and races. I know it's good today with Rossi and The crowd but somehow, it's not quite so magical. Have yourselves a brilliant day.
Those were the proper days of racing. The bikes were designed to kill people who didn't have the skill level or courage to ride them. I'm talking of course, about the 500 two strokes. These modern racers are awesome to watch, but I would seriously doubt they'd have the capability to ride those death machines of the 80s and 90s. The modern era bikes have way too much tech and rider aids it's totally removed the rider from the bike. We also see this on the road, with anti lift, abs, lean angle malarkey etc.. Put these riders on an old school bike from the 80s or 90s and they will surely kill themselves. I'm glad I learned to ride from a young age and still ride today and still riding an old school bike with zero rider aids and I love it. If you need ABS for a bike, then you shouldn't be riding in my opinion.
@@tonymontana897 I agree Scarface. I used to ride down to Phillip Island and Eastern Creek from QLD to watch those great races Wayne . Mick and the rest of the world. and I still my Yammy 900 from last century too

America world champions were never promoted in America. Everyone in Britain knew who Barry Sheen was. None of the Americans ever booked themselves on Letterman or big talk shows to promote themselves and the sport in the USA.
Rider skill over technology.....and I'll argue that with anybody.... I learned on the old bikes, raced the old bikes... The new bikes, although fantastic, do add a few levels of skill to any rider from the shear technology thats in them now.
1983 I had a gpz 750 with a Harris F1 full system on it. I could have shown Wayne Rainey the way around our back roads in Ireland. I was never beat once on that. Still got a gpz 900 1985 it's ready for the road in 2019😁
Wayne was awesome. Most have no idea how fast on a track you can go . I RR in the 80s . I played on the streets but race tracks with leathers on allowed full speed corners. On street I road like a warmup or cool down lap . Plus racing is about passing and getting real close to each other. The biggest difference between street riding fast and racing is braking late and staying on brakes in a corner vs coasting in ( caparison). I remember thinking I was fast and if only I had the bike. Three yrs. Later I turned 14 seconds a lap faster on a slower bike ! I never had the privilege to be on the track with Wayne but did watch him live . I did have the Chance to be on the track with Kevin and learned he was another level . I hung on for a while even passed him when he blew a corner but he slid right back on the inside Clean kept a beautiful line and moved slowly away . FJ 600 vs FJ 600 . Nothing magical about the bikes just good fun club racing
Was talking to him once about 8 years ago, at the Taupo Motorsport Park here in NZ, turns out he moved to NZ and was living here, dunno if he still does.
It’s amazing that Kawasaki’s air-cooled 2-valve per cylinder in-line 4 Gpz 750 beat Honda’s water-cooled 4-valve per cylinder V-4 750 Interceptor that year
It's funny how life is he was talkin about this 30 years before he got injured and paralyzed. The very words coming out of his mouth if I wreck and feel that I can't get up and that's exactly what happened.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have an 83 gpz1100 sitting in my garage right now under 15 thousand miles, and in very good shape. Back in 85 I had a gpz750 that was painted green with a white and very dark blue stripe. I was told it was a Kirker Edition replicas??? Does anybody have any info on that? Was thinking of making this one like that, it's red with a silver and dark blue stripe. Or I may sell it just not sure yet my glad I have it cuz it's fun to go out on and listen to everybody say I haven't seen one of those in so long.

Yup, one of the good guys.
I noticed that also.
This film shows Laguna Seca's original 9-turn, 1.9 mile configuration. That was a very fast and much more dangerous circuit.

Very rare having these now vintage videos. It’s a real treat if you find anything new that hasn’t been shown over and over again.
Irony in his words..my all time favourite racer..Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson a close second.

Many top roadracers do not even street ride. They recognize the risks, and save the fun for actual racing.

That 8 valve engine was relatively competitive at the time
