      jon my I disagree. You can weld the floor pan, but then it’s been noticed that the spot welds elsewhere start to fail. The only proper solution is to tie the diff in to the chassis legs. The way it should of been from the factory.

    • @jonmy1415
      @jonmy1415 Před 4 lety

      pistonpoweruk I understand what you are saying. I had to weld in subframe reinforcements on mine. Then get an x brace from mason engineering and change all the subframe bushings. It’s a pain but worth it for this car. Keep in mind, mine is supercharged with meth injection. That’s why I did overkill.

    I used to have one, everything is great about them (except maintenance requirements). God knows I miss that sweet sound of the S54. The steering was amazing. I loved heel-toe shifting. It was a natural reflex to press the Sport button upon start up. I regret selling it. I had my subframe fixed, I had my VANOS issue addressed, in 6MT.... Even got a hold of a nice Imoal Red interior. And now the prices just keep getting higher and higher for clean cars..... Such a timeless design. Beautiful. Fun to drive in the higher RPMS. I have driven a 135i, and its a very nice car. It came in a 6 speed manual, M-sport package, which was rare. I have also driven the E46 M3, 6 speed manual. Both are great cars. You cannot go wrong with either one. It depends what you are looking for. But I do admit, there is something special about the E46 M3. How it hugged the corners and jetted down country roads made you feel like a freaking rock star. If there were ever a car where you could just escape into and jet down a road and drive endlessly, it is the E46 M3.

    Nick, that space under the hood is not and never was for the battery in any E46. It was the original location for the ABS pump in the early models. When they moved the pump to be near the master cylinder they left that space open. Otherwise, awesome vid as always.

    Most people hate on SMG because they don't take the time to learn the gearbox. They expect that it should do everything for you like a DCT, but it's old school single clutch technology. It actually forces you to learn throttle control, drive train slack, and shift timing. You can't hop in an SMG car and expect to drive it perfectly, it's not a manual, it's not an Automatic, it's not a DCT, it's something different. BMW took an normal manual transmission and hooked up a hydraulic operating system with computer control during the transitional period when DCTs were gaining popularity. Do not turn down an SMG car because you think it will feel like a video game, it's nothing like that at all. SMG cars are still drivers cars and it doesn't take away from the soul of the E46 M3.

      Nobody cares the excuses every smg owners have to make, the simple fact of the matter is that all smg gearboxes are crap and that’s why the manual cars command a premium over the smg ones. I had a smg m3 for two months before selling and buying a 2004 manual m3 and it is just way better. Sorry.

    • @TheBlackdragon936
      @TheBlackdragon936 Před 5 lety

      Eidrian111 That isn’t true, it’s bad rumors being spread and in all actuality it’s the perfect manual Transmisson. All the good and none of the bad. Most of the time it’s the salmon relay and not the pump butdealerships lie to get the most money out of you and the relay is just a few bucks.

    Hey Nick I guess it’s not the best example but because you talked about Porsche engineering and displacement etc..... I think that the 959 is the best example what Porsche was and is capable of. The 959 produced around 450hp out of an 2.85l engine( in the 80’s). They also build and “S” model with 500hp out of the same 2.85l engine. Cheers

    The Sport button in my 2000 E39 M5 also tightened the steering in addition to remapping the throttle. It’s possible the steering adjustment wasn’t a feature of the E46 M3 although that would surprise me. There was a notable difference between the standard and Sport throttle responses in my E39 M5 much less so moving from Efficient to Sport to Sport+ in my current 2017 M3. If you popped the Sport button in the E39 M5 while accelerating in 2nd or 3rd gear (only manual offered, no slushbox), you left your head in another ZIP code.

But it was far from the technological marvel it was deemed to be. And for what it's worth, I'm not one of those manual or bust types... still a kick ass car and one to be proud of, brother.

    Fuel pump, SMG, VANOS, water pump, radiator overflow, subframe, engine bearings, and a few other expensive goodies go out on these. If you drive it like a regular car and really keep up on the maintenance, it will likely last as long as a Honda or Toyota of the same era. If you beat on it and let the fluids get old, it might last 100k miles, anyway.

    I wanted an e46 M3 for as long as I could remember. One day, one became available to me at the right time when I was in a position to buy. It was under $20k and had less than 100k miles. Knowing about the subframe issues, I had that investigated before buying and it was essentially good as new. I had always wanted the MT and knowing all the negativity the SMG attracts, the fact that my car to-be was an SMG was somewhat disappointing and discouraging to me at the time but all-in-all, it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up over something so petty. I told myself that one day I would do the MT conversion and all would be good but then something funny happened. I've grew to love the SMG when I never thought I would. I think a lot of the distaste it attracts is unwarranted. Sure, it was a little clunky around town... for about a week until my foot and hands got used to how the car wants to be driven. Truth be told I can't remember the last time it jerked me around... the thing is smoother than warm butter. Don't get me wrong, I still love driving manual cars and I love having a clutch pedal but the fact that the SMG has paddles and a hydraulically accentuated clutch doesn't make it bad as many seem to think (i.e., its not "to be avoided like the plague" as I've seen written before). It's just different. It's a different driving experience and I think that makes it kind of cool. It was innovative at the time, its tract performance is outstanding, and its allegedly faster than the MT (not to mention the CSL was exclusively fitted with SMGs). If anything I am thankful for the SMG because it not only provided me with an affordable means to own my dream car, but also gave me a new experience and opened my mind to new possibilities. Ignore the naysayers, the SMG is a great transmission. Sure if it breaks it will be expensive, but the car is from Germany... of course it will be expensive to fix.

    Ah, the joy of owning a E46 M3. Sending oil samples to analysis and hoping that no metal shavings will be discovered. At least the early 2 years were all plagues by bad VANOS, connecting rods failures or blown gaskets. One friend of mine LOVES this car and searched for years until found a good example. Sold the car after less than one year of owning it. Too many headaches. And this is a guy that own several repair shops and can (and did) repair the VANOS in his. Even the 320is he also owns gave him less troubles...and this is a car that breaks down a lot.
    The car can be a Pandora Box and "your experience may vary".
    Also, will never understand owners that will drop the car or change the exhaust. It's like doing boob jobs on the Italian Renaissance statue you own or paint more details in a Van Gogh painting because they are to vague for his taste. You cann't improve a classic, you can only change it's character in worse. You have to like it as it is, quirks and all.

    Also the sport button differs between each make and model version of the BMW some of the models that helps focus on tightening the steering and handling while other models it boosts the acceleration and power from only 3000rpms to the 8000rpms, without that sport button you'll be lucky to even hit 5000 RPMs so it does help

    The last and arguably best BMW worth buying. To any prospective owners I second what Nick says: buy the cleanest example you can...the upfront cost will save you any repairs/restoration needed which can easily total the value of the car, especially if its an M. Buy a 6 speed...don't buy an SMG. If you can't drive manual, don't buy one of these. Don't buy one if you can only afford to buy it and not maintain it. You need a big budget for these cars...its just the way it is. Also, park the car in a garage. BMW interiors turn to cardboard when exposed to sun day in an day out.

    I own both 2002’s e46m3 and Honda s2k. Both are totally different beasts but they are both very engaging, well balanced, and fun to drive on normal streets. Seriously with the insane amount of HP and torque on modern sports cars I don’t know how you drive around and not get into trouble by Johnny Law. Already with 333hp for my m3 I have to always watch how fast I am driving to avoid speeding tickets. And by modern standards the m3 isn’t all that fast.
