I find the E46 most balanced and timeless. The E30 looks funky in a retro way. The E36 seamlessly blends something a little less overtly muscular than the E46 but more modern than the E30.

+S Miller Thats gonna be a really tough one between the E39 M5 vs E60 M5. The E39 is simply a gorgeous, amazing, super elegant killer (kinda like a hot ass milf with glasses). The V10 in the E60 should go down in history as one of the best engines ever made. That induction noise is orgasmic........
I'm proud to be an E46 M3 owner, my daily driver! It makes my drive to work and home truly enjoyable. The styling is at the zenith of BMW design and the epitome of "the ultimate driving machine."

Even 4 years on in 2019 the 46 is still probably the best M3 ever made
now even in 2021 I still think it's the best.
@@dajilus2410 new models (also M4) are just too damn heavy. They got loads of hp and clever engineering, that’s why they are still fast, but on the track the weight is a big issue as they eat tyres and breaks. Unfortunately a real bmw drivers car like the e46 m3 will never come back.

People don't understand the E36 M3, you can say it doesn't have these pretty fenders or unique body panels; the E36 is about simplicity. It doesn't need all of these fancy body panels to show what it is. Some of you say that the E30 is best M3 of them all, it is just somewhat outdated and underpowered compared to the others, let's not forget the awfully expensive S14 to maintain. Then the E46 is cherished by people from all spectrums of the enthusiast world. It's definitely the prettiest of the m3s, but let's not forget, it barely makes power over the E36, and it borrows most of the suspension components from the E36. It's also much heavier than the E36. We can't forget about its infamous subframe issues( which baffles me because the E36 came with subframe reinforcements). The newer M3s have lost their touch compared to the older M3s, overpowered, too luxury oriented, and a serious weight gain. The E36 M3 is the best of the M3, and the most underrated of the M3s.

i completely agree with this, The e36 was and still is a majestic kind of car. not to forget that it introdoced so many new things in the car world. You already explained the rest so i can only say yes. yes it is underrated, but its excellent no matter what.

+Nathan thomas well for one it does have a bad exhaust note. its atrocious. On top of which they are quad tips(rice). Side vents(rice), front bumper is ricey to and looks like a body kit. Its the least pleasing m3 to look at imo. Its lines have been bloated too much. Of course all the kids who love forza love it. But not if you have a clue about clean design. Overall its too gaudy. Thats why its not timeless.

Be honest. The e46 got that damn camel hump dash coming up too high(behind the steering wheel. ) That combined with the low windshield just destroys vision. You only got like the length of a dong between the top of the steering wheel and the glass. It's also more expensive to fix than the e36. The e36 is the most practical of the bunch.

im with the E36. its the sweet spot between the e30 and e46. its still pretty and boxy, its fast. its part of my blood though. my dad loved old bm's especially m5s and e36 m3s

the e92 is a beautiful car, but it lacks the character that the pre e46 models had.
i would have an e92 just because of the cool factor you get from driving it but the feeling you get from the old straight six is euphoric in the e36, and the driving involvement is 20x better than that of the e92.
E92, the BMW that looks like every other post-2000 Japanese car. Especially when viewed from the rear.
E36 all the way. The E36 either in its 3 series or M form is probably the biggest icon in BMW history. Looks, the sound, the handling, the sheer pureness and soul of the E36 M3 is unmatched. Everyone, from car guys to casual drivers will think of an E36 the instant you mention BMW. Will choose one over any other BMW.

I drove an E36 yesterday and I had a smile ear to ear when I first depressed the clutch.
The M3 E92 is my dream car, and when saying dream car i don't have to be a billionaire to afford it which is achievable.

An 89 E30 I believe. We drove around looking at the Christmas lights. She let me hop over and steer it for a bit. I remember cruising through the outskirts of London at 70mph in the early 90's, my dad let me drive his '71 reg Jaguar Etype Mk2. Best part was the gear changes. A rattle with each shift. I also remember my uncle in Cambridge with his e46 M3, driving 60mph, head sticking out of the sunroof in latenight Cambridge. The days..
After driving them all myself, it's got to be the E90/E92. So good I bought one. Best handling and best sounding. Also a good looking car. Only downside like was said, MPG. 23 is the best I ever got and that was driving it like a granny. Haha.

The Euro Spec E36 is underrated. It's nearly as fast as an E46 and it looks so good, and it sounds better than the E46 in my opinion.

You forget the extra weight that came with the e46. They didn't bring much in the way of performance increases.

Great video,and it was amazing how you were able to get together every M3 from every past generations!!! This video was very informative of every past generation M3!!! I loved it!!! I like your true honesty about every single M3!!! You seemed to be non biased about the information you gave out on every M3!!! Your information was true and to the point!!! I personally myself owned a 1992 325i and I loved it!!! I know it might not have been as fast as an M3, but it pretty much gave you an idea what an M3 would be like if you upgraded to buying one!!! The M3 is a lot better in performance, Hores Power, and interior upgrades of course!!! Then again it's the top of the line of the 3 series!!!Now for this video comparison purposes, to me 1st place goes to the E46, 2ND would be the E36, 3rd would be the E92, 4th would be the F80, and finally the E30 would be last!!! I never was a big fan of the E30!!! It just seems and looks way to boxy and very very outdated!!! It just doesn't have that BMW look that the other M3's seem to have to them!!! If you would take off the BMW and M3 badges and also that front grill you probably wouldn't be able to tell that it was a BMW in my opinion!!! Maybe because it's just the 1st generation of M3's I don't know!!! It's hard to say!!! The over all looks of it just doesn't seem to appeal to me!!! Once again great video!!!👌👌👌

It´s a pity that M3 doesn´t mean 2-door coupé anymore, right. But BMW has a quite important heritage of even-numbered coupés, namely 6-series. The only car that´s named totally wrong in the BMW range is the 2-series Active Tourer, has nothing to do with the 2-series at all.
The rear arches on the M3 are so much better than the 4, though.
M3 or not, I freaking love the body style of my 2000 bmw e46 4door sedan, the way I keep it up, it turns heads and get loads of compliments. I guess what I’m trying to say, I’m keeping this car for generations to come. My 16-year-old loves it she loves the way it drives and feels smooth I’m passing it on to her which I made her promise me that she will pass it on to her kids as well, it’s gonna stay in the family for years to come no matter what.

Great video. Wonderful to see yesterdays hero's playing outside still even today. The F80 is an absolute monster of a modern family car. Not a lot of love for it compared to the classic M3s, but Chris Harris cant be too far wrong.

I have driven an E92 as my daily driver for 7 years and have had a permanent smile on face ever since I turned it on at the warehouse and had no idea what to expect of that V8! Not too many around where I live which makes it even better! I recently added the F80 to my garage. Still getting used to it vs. my E92. E92 is an analog scapel, where the F80 is a bit more brutish. But having them both and being able to drive them back to back anytime, is the stuff of dreams. Patience and time might have to find an E46 my way! I was never a BMW fan, but those M3s, they become an extension of you. A rev loving, all-out, corner-carving smile-inducing, extension!

One thing to note about the e46 is it’s throttle response with independent throttle bodies. It also is VERY aerodynamic vehicle. Because of the instant power, smaller size, and aerodynamics it pulls out of a corner like a monster. And if you go on a track that is the key to winning a a race, not 0-60 and top speed

Great review/video...one of the best cars ever made, not to mention one of my favorites. My favorite is a manual e46, it’s the perfect combo of raw driving and tuning technology. I love the historical aspects of the original m3. I love the looks and tech that’s possible, but the newest version is getting away from its roots a bit. I think the 1M is the size that the new m3 should be. Smaller, can throw it into turns, and a minimalist drivers car.
E30 is by far my favorite, but the E36 is a very nice car.

The F80 is matched in performance by an SS Camaro, and it gets stomped by a Z28 or a GT350. The E46 would never allow itself to be outdone by such inferior brands back in its day.

It's not a cast iron block and can't hold as much power as the E46, it's does sound great but when you mod the E46 M3 exhaust, it sounds like a formula 1 car. Check out the straight pipe videos of it.
+TheBlackdragon936 Eh, horsepower is not necessarily the matter here (Besides, I wouldn't be able to increase them in my country anyway). I guess I just prefer how V8s sound over 6 cylinders (This one in particular can sound insane).

Leader IM ϟϟ oil changing and inspection are simple things..should be 20-25 dollars more than a Japanese car...tires are a little more expensive with German cars..run flats are ranging from 500-600 per tire if you need to replace them..so none run flats should be a lot cheaper

Spectacular review Mate! I've never seen anybody assemble such a historically comprehensive review and focusing on what matters: driving experience. I think that every one but for collectors or consumerist would rule out the e30 and f. The fun is comparing those models in the middle of the chronology. What's astounding is how suicidal these Germans are. Here they make the coolest, smoothest, most durable sports engine in the world and abandon it for a video game inspired 6 or 4, nearly walk away from manual transmissions and even allow vinyl interiors in mid level offerings. Porsche is doing the same thing with the 718. Thank you very much for your super review!
