      Does anyone know what the leading design (most promising/advanced) USN unmanned "mothership" design would be at this point in time? I imagine, given USN budgets and advanced unammedn capabilities and development funds, they will eventually develop a selection of variants, perhaps one targeted at underwater unmanned, one for surface vessel unmanned, one for unmanned aircraft (either one for SVTOL/VTOL/helicopters and one for catapult launcher, or perhaps one design combining the features of both into one general air-focused unmanned ships. Then I imagine all varieties would have varying levels of smaller unmanned scount ISR assets like large quad copters with decent range at a minimum and I forsee quite heavy use of implementing loitering munitions/swarm attack technology as deemed neccessary, for light underwater stealthy torpedo-like swarms, cheap surface-level swarming munitions, and of course traiditonal air-based swarms.
      I just haven't happened to see what the leading US prototypes look like within these near future classes of ships.

  • @amorosogombe9650
    @amorosogombe9650 Před rokem +54

    The Korean carrier is quite beautiful. The two catapults suggest it's much smaller than US carriers that have 4 and sustain a crazy sortie rate. The ghost commander concept does look like the future of war. Unmanned AI driven semi autonomous systems are where it's headed.

    • @billrich9722
      @billrich9722 Před rokem +15

      It's overly complex. Just put two catapults next to each other on one deck. If you're dead-set on an offset deck, then put it on the same plane. You would get more overall deck space, have less of a wind trap and would probably give their engineers fewer fits.
      Complex and unique designs that are complex and unique for the sake of being complex and unique have no place in a military TO&E. That's something the US has been struggling with for a long time.

    • @aymonfoxc1442
      @aymonfoxc1442 Před rokem +3

      @@amorosogombe9650 Yeah, I like small carriers as well but people often overestimate how easy it is to sink a super-carrier. Back in the day, the big ones were slower but nuclear power solved that problem.
      I think a fleet of smaller carriers is probsbly a more adaptable solution for any country outside of the US (which can afford a combination of the two) and will suit distributed drone warfare. Notably, China is pursuing super-carriers and this buys the US some breathing room because they are expensive and take longer to build.

    The two gigantic rockets at the rear dec of the arsenal ship are literally rockets to deploy LEO (low earth orbit) recon satellites in case of emergency (enemy disrupting satcom using EMP - as NK and China both has nukes, these can be used as EMP by detonating 100km above the sea level). There are currently 2 systems under development by ROKA and ROKAF.
    Using various data link that Korea is developing, the arsenal ship can receive target designation from other ISR units (SAT, AWACS, drone, other ships etc) to relay it to various assets including L-SAM, ASM, HG ballistic and cruise missiles and new hypersonic ASM being developed.
    The unique thing about Korean systems is, the indigenisations and integration of comms (data link), ISR assets, missile systems and launch platforms that no one else other than US and China has the full capabilities of. And they achieve this at a competitive price according to recent NY Times article.
    Their only weakness is the airforce restricting itself to a cap on total operational planes and decreasing population where number of enlisting pool is shrinking YOY.
    ROKA is also about to sign a new ammo upgrade agreement where the new ammo is supposed to have the double the range and 3 times the energy on impact. There is a video footage on CZcams from ROKA which demonstrates the new ammo. The results were breathtaking. For example, new 7.62mm round had 4 MOA at 600m fired by their new LMG!!!! Also it penetrated IFV armour at 1km from the same gun (22/30 on target at 1km!!!!). If this is real, no need to use ATGM or recoilless guns as LMG (7.62mm) will take care of any armoured convey other than MBTs. ROKA announced its intention to replace all existing ammos with the new types (556 762 and 12.7mm). This is the game changer!!

    I'm very glad to see our Navy chose to go for a CATOBAR large size carrier, there's no point of making a STOVL type light carrier without fixed wing AWACS and pair it with the most expansive, high maintenance but low performance out of the 3 version F35B. Sure they say the new KCVX design is a 40,000t medium size carrier but even looking a the concept model one can assume it's going to be a bigger ~70,000t carrier. The problem will be how will it be powered: conventional or nuclear? Looking the size, will have at least 2 EMALS, 360 degree covering AESA radar etc. the carrier will be very power hungry not to mention Korean Navy only have 4 supply ships AOEs (1 10.000t, 3 4,500t) to supply 3 home fleet and a maritime battle group which will be the future CSG, at min 2 AOEs is needed to accompany one fleet. And lastly just one carrier won't be enough, 3 will be optimum but at least 2 should be built to hopefully have one always operational, even building a second carrier will need public understanding and government commitment to build and maintain such expansive assets

      So many people do not think of the maintanence downtime required. The U.S.has 11 super carriers, there are only 6 operational at any time with the others either undergoing refit/modernization, working up, or regular maintanence. Nuclear adds much more expense and only makes sense if your ships will be expected to sail for months on end.

SK already has F-35As and will be using F-35Bs in the CVX-1 and -2, so why not make the logistics easier and cheaper and get the F-35C? They would be the first foreign operator of the C model, which would be interesting.

    The Ghost commander mothership concept looks insanely cool, but can see many design flaws. Catamaran hull design on very large vessels are difficult and risky to construct due to potential structural integrity issues. This ship looks even more off balance than the conventional aircraft carrier that could flip during sea storms. It's not aerodynamic which will affect speed and fuel consumption. A neopanamax single hull design with twin angle flight deck (one on each side) with a centered island and an open top cargo bay with a telescopic crane would be more practical, balanced, and sustainable design. A mere suggestion that could help secure an actual sale in defense contracts with a more tangible and realistic design.

    It looks like most people are glossing over the fact that the concept drone carrier will also be fitted with "directed energy weapons". It may never grow past the conceptual stage, but there is a chance of laser drone carriers in the future.

    I was wondering when the VLS cells would get spread out and might even be subdivided by mission. I think I see fleet defense, Land Attack, Surface Attack, and then gun and missile based close in defense. You can put larger missiles in the midship where you can elevate the decks, so if you need longer range cruise or THAAD type missiles you have a place for them. I like it, a ship that can take a large span of missile sizes and they can also move around the magazines so you can air defend while firing a long range strike without the missile wash interfering with each other.

      Problem with that is that the higher the deck. The less stable the ship, so you end up having to make he hanger deck lower which limits the size of the aircraft the ship can handle.

    Ships like that would take another 30-50 years to develop the techniques and technologies to even build the necessary facilities and manufacturing and probably another 10-20 years to build even certain portions of the ship, let alone the whole fleet of replacements. Only possible if half of Asia was United under one Asian nation. Plus, apparently someone was inspired by the avengers S.H.E.I.L.D helicarrier design.
