suprising difference and tradeoffs between desktop and on-device editing.
thanks for illuminating this.
Great. Very important and to the point. It's must to watch before you start editing videos. I didn't find such consolidated information on any other channel.
Thanks Ben! Youâve been a big help to us in deciding on what equipment to purchase and how to make better quality content in the future. đđŒâđŒ
Great video Ben, because I do see people exporting straight from the mobile app to CZcams and then be confused about the low image quality of their video in comparisons to others they've seen, that were most likely edited on desktop.
One other thing that also surprises and disappoints many folks is that you cannot take a semi-completed project from the Insta360 mobile app to the desktop Studio app or vice versa - the two applications are totally separate and projects cannot be transferred.
Yep- thatâs because they have different editing capabilities and it would not work across platforms when the editors are so different.
@@BenClaremontSo im going to shoot a video for CZcams channel with my iPhone and insta360 flow. Am I better off using cinema p3 and lose some of the capability of the insta 360 app? I was going to transfer over to pc to edit on resolveđź
I was editing reframed video in DaVinci resolve. Just make sure the bitrate matches otherwise you'll lose quality.
Matches what?
Hi Ben great video - finding all your Insta360 content very helpful! Am I right that Studio does not support some things that the mobile app does support? Maybe it's my inexperience (vast) but I can't find in Studio: story production and multi view. Are these supported?
Iâve mostly been using the mobile app to edit my Insta360 footage, but recently I did use the desktop app. This is great information, I never know the video quality was better on the desktop app. Thanks for sharing Ben.
Ron you are everywhere
Excellent video Ben! thank you
Thanks. So to get the best quality out of the desktop, what resolution would I need to export it at ??
Great video! I wasn't very happy with the exports on my IPhone and will move to using the desktop for most of my work.
Fantastic video. Thanks a lot!
Thank's for info. Best regards
Thank you for sharing this tip!
wow great tip!! would love to see a hands on editing with insta 360 desktop for quick editing tricks
Thank you for the educational presentations! Can you tell me if it is possible to edit audio in Studio 360? I am researching how to remove drone noise from videos. I want to buy the Insta360 sphere. I do not yet have any 360 cameras, currently learning via channels like yours.
Yup! Iâve been messing around with EXPORT! Iâll be bumping the bitrate to 200. Iâve been doing 100 right now. This was spot on! đ€đŒ
Awesome video. I've found doing reframed exports on my mobile app at 1080p30 125M bits is good enough for me...I then import the reframed clip into another video editor app VN Video to add the reframed clip with other clips from my Samsung S21U or DJI M3 and export that project as 4k60 at 100 Mbit and upload it to my YT channel and it all looks super good.... although I don't really zoom into the footage as that causes a loss of quality
hey ben loving your videos which of your videos will show me how I can I join my footage i have shot on my X2 together either in the app or on my mac with the 360 studio
Keep up the good work Ben đ
Thanks Ben!
Really nice video, Ben! Do you know by any chance if you loose video quality when you edit and export in Insta 360 app (cellphone) vs Insta360 studio?
Ben you've been a wonderful resource for, oh, I dunno three years when I found you. Thanks for all your work and sharing it!
Happy to hear it Greg!
Ahhhhh it makes sense now! Thanks!!!!
Great information đ đ
Awesome video and tips as always! Thanks. I have never edited 360 on my phone, but I wish Insta360 would bring all the effects to the PC app.
@@PP3D my reason is crappy phone hehe
Thanks for this, saves me having to experiment with all the options đđ». I shoot mostly stills for Google Street View in the outdoors, but have a video project I need to process. What are the nice looking white speakers either side of the Mac screen? Are they just connected to the 3.5 sound out port or USB? I am looking to get some better ones here. Iâm still running the last Intel MacMini (Maxed out on SSD and Ram)⊠to keep compatibility with some software I use. I can add an Apple Silicon one when I feel the need! Cheers, Keith
Audio engine is the brand Iâm pretty sure đđ»
Hi, I like to take still 360 images every 2 secs and GPS while walking to get a Street View experience. I have been uploading them to Mapillary but now I want to manually blur faces of people I meet. My idea is to have a digital pen stamp to achieve this. Do you know of any fast view/edit software to do this?
Great video!
When exporting or editing with the mobile app, edit the ârawâ footage as it provides more export options, resolution, FPS and bitrate with effects.
Seriothr shotlab stories editing ruins the quality.
Thank you for your video. I just have a question.. I remember I could reframe the video within the app (using the viewfinder option) and save it to be opened with a PC in desktop version and use the desktop only for higher resolution exporting. Unfortunately I am no more able to do that. The reframed version is not same aspect in the desktop version. It shows a mess. Any help? Really thank you for your help
What about an SD card reader attachment to a phone would that work or is the magic in the insta 360 studio and being able to change that resolution like that
Love seeing Aussie content, I'm a Sydneysider too, infact I'm also a Commercial Skipper on the Harbour so you were in my office haha. Love your work Ben, I need to upgrade my 360 for my Moto content
Haha nice, such an epic location to work at. Iâm sure you could get some great shots there as well đ
@Ben Claremont being a Motorcycle content creator, I find the onboard video quality when travelling quick seems to fragment.
I'd love to see a video about maximising quality whilst travelling quick.....for example travelling through the Royal National Park in shade with trees passing
@@ThrottleDownunder set exposure manually and use a fast shutter speed. FYI Iâll be making a detailed 360 video course that will share all of my best tips for 360 video capture- you can join the wait list for that in the link in the description đđ»
Awesome tips bro, Greetings from Malaysia
Does the export quality limitation also applies to the app on the iPad? I have an iPad Pro with M1 CPU, which is quite powerful.
That was really helpful. thank you so much
No worries đđ»
What program do you recommend for Color Grading 360 videos? I'm using davinci resolve but it only lets you export to 4K and when you upload the video on youtube a hole appears below and above the 360 video.
Hi Ben, what laptop is best for editing videos? Is Mac Air good enough? I can not edit my videos on my android phone and ipad anymore due to memory issues so i am planning to get a laptop instead of desktop as well. Thanks
What would you do when there is bad weather during a 3D tour you are doing at your clients realestate
But can I do jump cut in the studio app? I need to trim out vid sections
I upcycle videos with either Topaz Video Enhance AI or Pixelmator Pro (yes, it does video since 3.2 (3.3 is out now even better)). I don't edit on a phone anyway, as my aging eyes don't work well editing, even on an iPhone 13 Pro.
Wow, I canât believe Iâve been doing it the wrong way for years. Thanks for this information.
Does GoPro Hero 11 give better quality when exported for 4k?
Thank you very much for such an informative video. Could you help me, please?. Letâs say I recorded on my X3( donât own it yet) 250 gb sd and I didnât edit it. Then I save it in my laptop and then onto the iCloud. And after, I erase the sd card.
The videos are in the iCloud( I erase the videos from the lap top for space reasons). After, when I decide to edit it, I bring it back from the iCloud to the computer to edit it.
People say I canât do that and I need to edit it before I send to the iCloud
I go 40 days on the rd in one go every summer. I feel very tired to start editing at night. Could you help me with your advice, please?.
Thanks in advance
Does the memory type effect the footage in insta360 x2 ?
If all i am interested in is exporting for instagram, and sharing with family and friends in Whatsapp, is it worth exporting on a desktop? Thanks for the vid!
Is it possible to export 360 video in side by side format? They key piece is that id like for it to work with the phones gyro. If anyone can help that would be great!!
Hey Ben, what are your thoughts on the card reader attachment and how much it would improve editing rather than wireless and also use with tablets. If you have not, run a similar experiment with the card reader and maybe it will help export higher quality videos. Try it and make a video of it. Good day to ya!
It wonât affect exports as those are limited by the CPU of mobile devices, which Insta360 caps anyway to avoid people trying it and their phones crashing. Only benefit to the card reader is if youâre doing lots of editing on mobile devices and not wanting to wait a long time to export or download to the device.
do you shoot on hd? or log
I have a question! I downloaded some videos and deleted them from the camera. Am I still able to edit them on 360 studio somehow?
Do you recommend any specific upscaling programs for 360 video? I have both reframed and 360 travel videos on my channel, but would like to up the quality.
Topaz Video AI, after the video has been reframed. But itâs not necessary as sometimes workflows like the ones I discussed in this video can make more of a difference
Does the insta360 x3 have a webcam mode like the x2?
How the hell did you get the Template tab in your Studio?
I don't see anything like that and I can't find any info on how to get one.
great tips
Can you eidit multiple clips in a timeline similar to making a reel on instagram?
Hi Ben, did you ever do a video on your coin/card inverted planets? I'm trying to recreate something similar and not sure if I need a tripod or how to set up the coins/cards. If you did a video on this please let me know. Thanks, you've made me a 360 pic fan!
Check out my ebook- you can download it for free in the description đđ»
@@BenClaremont I downloaded it yesterday, but haven't had a chance to look at it yet! Thanks so much!
Hey Ben, does the desktop studio have the AI people tracking / framing features that the phone app does? i.e. "me mode" etc.
PC app does the tracking too.
Great video! And is tha possible to AI Upscale for regular 360 video with computer? If I shoot with 5.7k, can I upscale to 8K?
Yes but it will take a long time and wonât be as sharp as actually shooting in 8K. So a small improvement
Bonjour, merci pour cette vidéo . Vivement le 23 pour la suite bon Week-end
Hello, thank you for this video. Can't wait for the 23rd for the rest, have a good weekend
How make slow motion video in apps insta360 bro?
I wish I had my x3 when I took the ferry in the harbour when I last visited in 2019.
How come my edited 360 videos won't airdrop to my iPhone? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Trying to edit on the computer and transfer file to my phone to upload on social media... the video plays on the computer but won't even download on to my phone đ€
bro I got improt failer 1 file is missing error in insta 360 studio
I need a good setup for motorcycle, my gear will be an Action 3 in the helmet, an Insta360 x3 in the handlebar and a drone. To save weight I will not bring a notebook but a good smartphone to edit videos, this problem with quality with the insta360 was a bummer now.
The Smartphone I chose has 16 GB and 1M Antutu benchmark but only 256 GB internal memory and no micro SD slot.
Very Nice
Any chance we might see a quick tips video on how to best shoot for and post to Google Street View? My road needs recording!
Yep I made that video recently if you check my channel
Hello, I have a big problem. No matter what I do, whatever export setting I set, I always get a green video with only sound. HELP!
Does reframing reduce quality no matter which application is used? @ 03:50 - meaning between Insta360 desktop app and something like Adobe Premiere?
Yes, as reframing is essentially zooming & cropping
If i edit videos using my phone will consume internet data? or the transfer between camera and phone will use the wifi connection between them provided by insta360?
Hello do you advise against using the linear function on the phone app? This causes the linear zoom to lose a lot of quality. Do you have a solution ?
Tanks You
I'm interested in this information as well
how about photos, I usually edit them on phone.
Is there a significant difference between editing on phone vs editing on mac ?
You canât edit dng files on a phone⊠so yes there will be much better results on a computer.
Hi Ben, we're going to build a mobile app for a virtual tour of a museum. What software do you suggest we use for this?
Mobile app building software? Thatâs not really my expertise.
I use the PC version of Insta360 Studio 2023. Unless I'm missing something, I don't believe the desktop software has the jump-cut feature. If it truly does not, I hope it will in the not-too-distant future. Do you have any information about this? Right now, I just export different edits and combine them using a separate video editing program.
Yeah currently insta360 Studio only supports single clip edits. Maybe theyâll add multiple in the future
@@BenClaremont Thanks! Look forward to more great content from your channel.
A lot of us edit for the purpose of IG or CZcams shorts does this mean we are only able to achieve 1080 even if we edit on desktop using the studio ? Please correct me if I am wrong ?
No⊠1080 is in the app, as you will see by opening it.
Very nice. We really need 8k though a well!
I've been exporting on pc 4k @125mb & .h264. So I should change this to 200mb and .h265?
Yes
@@BenClaremont Thank you
TLDNR use desktop â€
Are there any possibilities that the desktop version will eventually work on an iPad Pro m1 or m2 chip
Probably not as an iPad is not a desktop device.
The real dealbreaker for PC app is inability to split single clip into pieces that are needed and reframe/edit/export only required bits of the clip.
You have to reframe the whole clip, export it and slice afterwards in another editor, which is quite stupid.
Or am I missing something and this option is available?
You can add an in / out point on your clip and export just that section. And if you need a different clip from the same source video you can copy that project into a separate editable project and both will be preserved.
Using the word âdealbreakerâ with free software is having too high expectations. You can easily combine those clips in other video editing platforms
Another difference I noticed with the desktop app, when you edit 3k 100fps and set it to regular speed, there is still no audio, but on the mobile app, you get audio when its not in slow mo. Unless I am missing something, maybe someone can help.
Having this same problem now....no audio on desktop, don't understand why.
Why haven't they added the shotlabs to the desktop?? It is maddening.
No idea
Really wish insta would hurry up and update this!
@@TopblokeGolf You can only use the software if you own the camera as it requires a valid serial number - probably because of what you suggested.
The phone app now has 4k and high bitrate options. So basically, with the stories feature oy available on phones, it's the best way to edit untill they have them in the desktop application.
hi do you have application for blackfin 720degree camera!? i cant find new version of the app anywhere đđi cant use my camerađđđ can u please help međđ

@@BenClaremont i cant use my blackfin camerađđ do you know wa5 app is compatible for editingđđ thetha+ cant read the appđđ pla help make a review in Blackfin 720â° sports cam.. and her app thanks a lotđđđ
Is it always best to export at max bit rate?
Anywhere from 100-200mbps is fine. Not a huge amount of difference really, aside from double the file sizes
I find editing 360 footage in premiere on a powerful PC a slog. How is it on apple? Is it better in the 360 app than premiere?
Havenât used a PC in many years, but itâs fine for the most part on Mac, assuming you have the specs to do it.
Export from the Insta360 app is horrible on Intel Macs. Way slower than it should be, as compared to other video software. Apple silicon is another matter (e.g. 8 hours on Intel vs. 1/2 hour on M2 Mac). Editing 360 was fine on Intel Mac (in Final Cut Pro) after exporting from Insta360 app.
Regarding quality H264 or H265?
H265
But now you can export flat 4k and 125Mbit, works great on my S21u and tested on a shot of 2019 - that looks so crisp now, amazing - never had this quality before
Yes theyâve updated it very recently. Although Iâm fairly sure itâs still h.264 so quality will still be better on desktop.
what is the speed for windows vs mac?
No idea
i wish we can edit multiple clips on insta 360 studio.
Just arrived yesterday and it's crashing in the phone app when I click on any video to edit. It says swipe to change perspective and crashes. I'm at a loss because I can't find any help for this situation. Thankfully I own a capable laptop and I'm still in business over there. But I want to utilize the phone version as well.
Perhaps your phone is too slow
@@BenClaremont that's exactly the problem. I'm one of those people who keep a phone until they force me to get a new one.
I wouldn't say that the reduced export resolution on phone/tablets is due to their CPU/GPU limitations. Seems to be a decision Insta360 made. Just try Lumafusion on an iPhone or iPad; plenty of horsepower for video. Used to easily beat my i9 Mac; though not an issue now with M1/M2 silicon.
Yeah but trying to export 5.7k video at a high bitrate on a $100 Android phone from 10 years ago is destined to fail. Hence why they donât encourage it⊠there would be more people complaining about crashing phones than people currently complaining about resolution caps.
@@BenClaremont Nice of you to respond, Ben. That's perhaps a bit of a straw man argument :) They clearly have the software chops and could easily allow 5.7k export on appropriate hardware configurations (it's straightforward to grey out the option on wheezy hardware). Their export on a 2019 8-core i9 MacBook Pro is woefully slow, and according to your 2013 Android phone argument should have been res-limited too. I get the impression that they focus on adding "cool" features. You see this all the time with many companies; cool software features sell hardware, improving basic functionality is usually only appreciated by existing users.
The desktop is pretty basic in terms of features. For example, I like the jump cut feature of the mobile app, but you can only trim on the desktop app.
Looking forward to your new course.
Is that mean if I export my 5.7K as 8K it wil become better quality? How comes?
No⊠I said this in the video. The codec matters more.
Always used the desktop software for my x3........
Why don't they have shot lab on desktop. The whole thing could be alot easier.
this really does make me sad because mobile has the best features such as this handheld reframing thing you can do. it makes framing really easy and has a nice handheld wiggle to it. this is not possible in desktop and i have a 2 in one laptop that turns into an tablet
Donât be sad⊠it really just comes down to the lower CPU ability of handheld devices.
What about the iPad ?
What about it?
We need HDR Video on the 1" 360 RS
The desktop app does not have features of the iPhone app. This is miserably ridiculous. When finish a trip after recording a lot, you want to transfert all files to your desktop and edit later. There's no excuse for those features, like the split-screen not to be on desktop.
Have you used your 360 recently? Mine stopped allowing me to use my pc and remove the card to transfer files. I'm not sure if that was specific for me or for everyone. But in order to use it again, I had to load the 360 software into my phone, then link my phone to the dang camera -load videos to phone, through wifi, then load videos from phone to pc through usb. Such a pita. And it was already a pita before when it worked fine. Phucking China man. Disposable trash after a year. The whole format is a pain, it takes so long to upload and download. And camera is very sketch at best after owning it over a year. The driving footage is awesome because of the image stabilazation and that's basically all i use the dang thing for now. An over $460 dash cam, smh.
I have found that editing over the phone results in a rather poor quality file. While editing with a PC, there are not enough stories like on a phone. Quite inconvenient
Bought my first camera the other day. x2.
And I realized that my phone processes and uploads the video very slowly. I will probably use a computer.
