  • I'd like to talk about Cycling in New Zealand as I remember searching for information about New Zealand and didn't find a lot of very useful information. So I thought I'd make my own video hope it helps and any questions ask in the comments! (This Trip is from Cape Reinga, Slope Point)

    Good tips. 👍🏼 New Zealand is one of my fav places. About 10 yrs ago i river boarded from the North island to the South island with some friends. I definitely want to go back and do a bike tour next time.

    Your video is very helpful. You said something in the beginning of Pt. 2, "I know this isn't helpful...". You were referring to driving speeds. You are right and cycling major roads IS dangerous at times. So I appreciate your perspective and tips. Thanks. I am planning a trip myself.

    Very informative videos. I would recommend anyone coming to NZ that they Google Tour Aotearoa as this is the major North to South Cycle route. It has been developed by three brothers known as the Kennett brothers. The brothers do excellent touring books on all cycle trails in NZ and are up to date. This is a hilly country in the North Island and mountainous in the South. There are several places you can only cross by Ferry. Best advice read on line the Kennett Brothers publications. Enjoy your trip.

    Thanks for the great helpful video, I am planning some South Island bike tours in mid September 2019, is it a bad idea considering the cold/rainy weather ?

      U might get great nice sunny days but remember that is New Zealand spring and weather is already unpredictable in New Zealand. Work north and head south and go slow till the weather improves I suppose. Good luck with ur trip :)

    Very informative video! I see you used bikepacking bag
    - how did you transport food/water and was the size of the bags enough for you?
    - did you miss something?
    - do you recommend high end clothing - like merino shorts, rain jacket etc? :) Or can i use low end equipment?
    - was the low gear of your mtb enough for south island? - i planning to buy a gravelbike and i am not surfe, if the lowest gear will be enough, most of the bikes have maximum 34/42
    I am not sure about it, my plan is to travel for 3-4 months with my girfrliend by gravelbikes fom november to march.

      TheOneGoodRoad a video for the answers, thats very nice! :)
      - can you also tell us about, how you charge your electical stuff?
      - did you use bike lights?
      - which sleeping did you use? was it warm enough? I am thinking about to buy a cumulus 300 (comfort temperature is 4 degreee)
      - 2-3 best places of the whole trip?
      - did you stay at some places for a longer period, to explore the sourroundings without bikepacks?
      - did you do some great walks for several days? (if yes, where did you store the bike?
      We are from germany :)

    Thanks! Did you take any bus or train transport somewhere during your tour? where did you fly to and from?

    • @TheOneGoodRoad
      @TheOneGoodRoad  Před rokem

      Nope just flew into Auckland (San Francisco - London - Hong Kong - Auckland) then rode south. I took the ferry between the two islands and then at the end of my trip sold the bike and hitch hiked back up north (roughly). Good luck on ur planning!

      That's the case in most countries in the world not just New Zealand. 😛

    What works the best. MTB bike or rigid Gravel bike with 40mm tires?

    • @TheOneGoodRoad
      @TheOneGoodRoad  Před rokem

      Honestly with the washboard bumpy roads sometimes on gravel roads I think the MTB is a better choice because of the suspension in the fork
