- It’s time to wave goodbye to my “new” 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range highland. Why? Well time to move on to other cars and review lots of other things as I also put them to daily use racking up miles and picking apart what’s good and what’s bad.
So after covering early 6,000 miles in approx 6 weeks it’s time to sell it on and tell you what I lived about it and what I think could be improved. It’s a superb EV, but some other cars do have features or functions the Tesla doesn’t….

Tesla does slow down when the speed limit changes..you just need to set the "max speed over speed limit"..I usually set it for 5 MPH over speed limits. Tesla needs: 1) same exterior door-handles as model S/X with lighting, 2) Heads-up display, 3) Same muted turn signal as ID4 (as you indicate), and 4) allow driver to temporarily drive without turning off autopilot (as you indicate).
I often think a head up display or digital speed screen would have been a much better idea than the rear screen.
my tesla is wrong about the current speed limit almost all the time. It seems to see signs on side streets or parallel roads or that apply to different vehicle types etc and takes them.
For me the car needs stalks, and proper wiper & light controls. It's quite often foggy where I live and without fail the car thinks it doesn't need lights (presumably because it sees white?!?) and it is very mistaken. Sadly only auto lights really works as a setting at the moment - setting it on and it just undoes the setting (immediately if you're not yet in drive) which is fairly annoying. Oh, and fog lights come back please!
I'll not buy another one unless either Tesla add these or 3rd party options add enough to make it usable e.g. the s3xy buttons come close. Given their direction I guess that means this will be my last Tesla :(
I'd like things like an instrument cluster (my hands block the speed portion of the screen in normal driving position so i have to lean to see it) and a lighter weight non-glass roof but it's not a deal breaker.
@@motoringnation Yes that rear screen is a waste if you normally only drive the car with two people. At the moment Tesla only make 4 door large cars ! Much better to have HUD or Speed display separate and some manual switchgear please for indicators and wipers.

The door handles are not a problem on a white Model 3, although I agree a light at night is a good idea.

I took delivery of my reengineered M3 LR last month , first EV, I absolutely love it!!! The minimalism and tech are amazing. I love stalkless design , acceleration is amazing , it's quiet, very comfortable. It puts a smile on me every time I get in the car.

I like everything but the lack of turn signal stalks. I’ve learned to drive w/o them but the button feature hasn’t improved the driving experience. Especially when the wheel is inverted.

Thank you Richard for this valuable content. I've tried it recently and the only point i could add to your analysis is i found the grey strip (around led) below the windshield to be less than ideal when sunny with harsh reflection in the front.
Really enjoyed the Highland content and excited at the prospect of you having a different car regularly as it will give us a good look at many options. You mentioned even trying some on the cheaper end and I for one would love to see you using 10-20k car for a week or two and show that they can deal with a lot of use from family use to long drives - I loved your "cheap EV" challenge you did and actually bought an Ioniq 28 last year because of it.
I’ve had a model 3 for a few weeks and absolutely love it! I came from and estate car and can easily get the same amount of a stuff in my Tesla. The only issue I’ve had is the driver seat bolster has lost it stitching. I’ve contacted Tesla and it looks like they are going to sort it!

I wonder what exactly you didn't like so much about the headlights. I thought Tesla headlights were the top of the industry, with addressable pixel matrix that they can use to turn off light pixels in the directions of other drivers' eyes, and making them able to selectively illuminate the road and signs, without wasting energy as in blasting light deep into the woods. Otherwise, great video!
You should check the matrix lights in other makes and then you'll realise how poor they are

I had a little Citroen C2 VTR and the headlights on that were amazing. I had a Vauxhall Vectra many moons ago and even with the main beams on no oncoming traffic ever noticed.
How would you compare the ride comfort and noise levels comapred to a Model S (pre refresh), raven perhaps?

@ouethojlkjn That might be interesting. From what I have seen, I would take a 3 over a Y. It seems every other car in our village is a white Model Y.
@@alangravy27 Yep if the 3 was a hatch we would not have got a Y (3 aperture is not a great Dog car)...and yes it is white!!!
Rocking the better camera- A7SIII, FX3 or ZVE1 ?(all same sensor, has that appearance although could be a LUMIX).

Curious to see how many of these perform better now than when you tested a year (or so) ago.
They are far worse. In fact so bad, Tesla have withdrawn these as features if you look at heir website.
@@johnmansfield3317they haven’t withdrawn anything. They are still available on the Model 3 2021 I’m driving. It does a pretty good job but still slower than how I would do it so I don’t really use it much. The new cars without parking sensors don’t have the feature yet but it will be available soon. Watch the videos from the states with the High Fidelity Park Assist.

Good video. In last few years I’ve driven either as primary driver or long term loaners and will rank by category below a 2020 Model Y LR, ‘22 Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD Limited, 2019 Audi e-tron Prestige, and now a highland Tesla Model 3 RWD (owned), and a ‘24 Audi Q4 e-tron Premium Plus and Volvo C40 (long term loaners).
Comfort in descending order: 1. ‘19 e-tron Prestige. The infinitely adjustable seats, massage, etc and serene quiet in the vehicle, closing panoramic sunroof, rear window shades, makes it one of the most luxurious vehicles on the road. 2. ‘24 Model 3 RWD, Tied 2. Ioniq 5 Limited - although lack of adjustable seat bolstering was a pain given that the bolstering doesn’t hold me in place for that car’s speed - but softer suspension over bumps makes up for that somewhat. 4. ‘20 Tesla Model Y - seats are great. Suspension is way too tight, even with smallest diameter wheels, and you feel every minor bump on the road very harshly (I know this has been improved in later Model Ys). 5. Volvo C40 - comfortable interior dogs, but handles both corners and bumps on road really poorly. 6. Audi Q4 e-tron - internal trim is so plasticky and hard, it’s impossible to get your elbows comfortable when you don’t have both on the steering wheel. Very hard and cheap plastics all around. I can’t even imagine what the ID3 is like.
Performance in descending order: 1. ‘24 Model 3 RWD - yes, on paper it’s slower. 0-60 is 5.8s. But the way it handles and the way it feels around corners more than makes up for that. 2. ‘20 Model Y LR (with $2k performance add on) - very quick in a straight line, but take a corner, and it feels its weight. 3. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited - insanely quick until you get to a corner. 4. Audi Q4 e-tron - not that quick, but feels quick, and steering is nice and tight. Good balance of handling and performance. 5. ‘19 e-tron- this is not a performance car. It’s a luxury car. But when you need sheer speed, you can get more than enough. 6. Volvo C40 - just feels quick, but so clumsy in corners, that I don’t want to drive it quickly.
Safety: 1. ‘19 e-tron - best adaptive cruise and lane keep assist of the bunch. Never had phantom braking or anything similar. Just relaxed cruising as you said you experience in the ID3. 2. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited - HDA2 system works really well. 3. ‘24 Model 3 RWD - wow, Tesla’s autopilot and FSD has come a very long way since ‘22 when I had the Model Y. Really impressive. Tied 4. Volvo C40 and Audi Q4. 6. ‘20 Model Y LR - I had an exceptionally poor experience with this. Phantom braking happened every day at least twice a day mid highway driving and came so close to causing accidents, that this is ultimately why I sold it. I believe modern Model Ys don’t have the issue anywhere near as bad, and that even mine was an anomaly.
Autopilot adjust to speed limit change. My car does it since new in 2021. You can also add an increase in speed or percentage, like speed limit + 8 km/h or speed limit + 10%. Its an option to turn on in the autopilot menu and it stays on indefinitely until changed.
Will be great to get your opinion on FSD supervised v12.3. I use 99% of the time stateside in Midwest & very rarely have any interventions. It sometimes is too cautious, but makes sense at this point to be that way.

We’re still waiting for FSD to come here to the UK… it does look like there’s been loads of progress, both on the software, and in regulatory discussions.
Hey Richard - had to have a new windscreen & now the temp sensor doesn’t work - is it a case of just plugging it back in, or is it another new windscreen?

If you're comparing basic autopilot then maybe the difference is somewhat negligible. If you're comparing even the advanced or FSD, there's no comparison.
@@achillesworks I owned a model 3 and now a Škoda enyaq, the autopilot on the enyaq is much better and just works with no crazy emergency stops on the motorway. 🤷
Software version V11.1 2024.3.15 Auto-wipers fixed! I know i couldn't believe it either, but using FSD V12 now in all conditions, they worked perfectly (or at least as good as traditional auto-wipers) .
I have a M3 and you are right about the rain sensor. I actually think the upgrade has been worse than before. It comes on when it’s not raining and I think it’s due to tree branches that are hanging over roads and when it does rain it hesitates to operate and I have to hit the washer button all the time so I can see out the window while it catches up.
I have given up on the automatic wipers and just use the voice command "wipers on". As soon as I say that the wipers come on at the right speed. Don't understand it but it works

I had an ID.3 and was very pleased to be rid of it, the software was atrocious. I part-exed it for a brand new M3 RWD which I love. However, perhaps the ID.3 has improved and I am very much looking forward to learning what you think of it.
If you were, like me, coming to the end of a lease on a 21 M3 LR, would you keep it or order the highland?
Options complicate the production process. Not a Tesla choice!
I don't have highland currently (and probably won't upgrade, for now at least, as I really prefer the stalks). Love the car but as far as negatives go (as of today):
1. Phantom braking - good news is I have not had a full on emergency brake for a few months now (maybe improved?) but while on adaptive cruise control I do get the car unnecessarily slowing down sometimes and so I find I have my foot hovering near the accelerator to compensate sometimes. Sometimes it seems to be caused by shadows and sometimes its due to opposing traffic it thinks are too close perhaps.
2. Wipers. Although maybe slightly improved recently?
3. Unnecessary loud beeping when I put the wheels over road edge markings (with narrow roads in NZ its pretty common to use all of the road). It doesn't always do it but when it does it gives you a fright (in fact I have now turned down warnings volume which has helped but undermines the intent of the warnings).
Interestingly I was looking at the Tesla shop yesterday and they called the new Model 3 the Highland (by listing parts only compatible with it). Maybe they are going along with it to avoid confusion 😅
Great video - totally agree about FSD - haven't had an issue with speed limit changes, but it is quite "wonky" in FSD and annoying in kicking me out when I make any minor manual takeover. The rain sensor issue is crazy - they need to improve this asap. Otherwise, love my rear-wheel drive 2023 3, and looking forward to trading in for the new performance 3!
I have the previous model 3 and the lack of indicator stalk is making me pause, on the motorway it would be fine but roundabouts when is reversed on the other side of the wheel how did you find that?
Charging network still worth a mention, long journeys in a none Tesla can go wrong very easily
Great summary. I agree it's baffling that Dog Mode and Sentry Mode haven't been copied by other EVs, and I was quite non-plussed using Autopilot. Smart Cruise Control in my trusty old e-Niro seems far better.

Small gripe. You have to pay for Premium Connectivity for live traffic info. This is free with Google. We use our phone alongside the Tesla screen. I do hope the next Model Y gets better suspension.
I'm really looking forward to what they do with the next generation of cars/upgrades, the cars are pretty mature now, so hopefully a lot of nags get sorted out in the next set of updates
I had a first gen M3P since 2019 and now 2 years into a 2nd gen M3P. I’ll be honest, They are great cars but I won’t be buying another for a while. For a near 6 year old car now, the lack of real updates in terms of exterior styling and interior styling has been minimal. Wheels aside, you be hard pressed to tell the difference a standard 2019 LR to the latest (60k) highland Performance. Still no 360 cameras, front lights are still playing catch up despite matrix finally coded, lack of welcome lights. I’d also love an enable/disable option of some kind of interior sound like BMW iconic sounds to bring a little driving involvement.

16:00 It's a shame that the UK Tesla owners do not (yet) have access to FSD Beta (Supervised FSD), and as a result, you simply do not see the progress that is being made on the autonomy front. But you should really watch the many videos from US Tesla owners that show the capabilities of FSD.
Comparing a tesla to the id4 I mean really? I test drove one. While esthetics it was nice that's all I thought about it. Interface sucks. No Getty up and go. I have a M3 22 and I think headlights are pretty bright.

Had my white (I'll call it the 2024 M3 rather than the Highland 😁) LR for a couple of weeks. Love it is the short answer. The speed is stupidly fast - but so exhilarating. Why would I want a performance model - I can't imagine, but perhaps some of the other features and improvements are/is a reason?
What I didn't realise it has until I took delivery and started driving it is that when sitting at traffic lights it will politely "bong" at you to let you know the lights are now green and you can go. Such a useful largely undocumented feature. Any other cars have this? I don't remember any of the reviews I looked at mentioning it. Great if and when we are distracted at the lights - which happens to all of us from time to time.
Oh, and the lack of stalks - such a small downgrade I now won't even criticise the lack of them. Here in AUS (Tasmania) we love our roundabouts probably as much as the UK. Hardly an issue, although I still occasionally have to glance at the buttons, as I haven't memorised upper button for right and lower button for left yet.
Have really been enjoying your videos. Personally I think this car has bags of character, I never want to stop driving it. Recently test drove a 77w Cupra Born but the Tesla makes me grin all the time.
I'm finding the wipers are working quite well on our 2022 M3P. But it also doesn't rain as much where i live. Interesting.....
How about something on the Renault Megane etech? Not seen much on that, but what I have seen has been quite positive.

A feature of Dog Mode is it disables the window buttons. My lil’ suckers will often wind down the windows by accident, if dog mode isn’t activated.
Hi can you tell me what the the cameras in front of mirror are supposed to see when driving, I say mine don’t work properly where Tesla say they do ! I can’t find a video showing this 😢thanks Dan
Go to service menu, there is a menu "camera preview" you can select any camera feed while parked.

15:30 US FSD will avoid pot holes if it can. We are on a 6 year old stack here in the UK, hence grabbing the wheel disables AP here.

I swapped a model 3 for an id4 only for the additional space to carry everything that comes with a baby. My biggest regret was not waiting a few more months for the first model y’s to land in the uk. The id.4 is lovely and quiet to drive, but the software drives me crazy. I’ve had two updates at the stealership and they took 10 and 8 days respectively before they could get the update to fully install. The car also has the ability to precondition the battery, but the functionality was disabled by VW unless you purchase a new 23 or 24 model year. The car will only raise the battery temperature to 0c and that’s it.
Come back to the light!

Yes, software in all cars produced by the VW group (including Porsche)is really antiquated, especially compared to Tesla. Apparently, the reason is that the systems are comprised of hardware and software from around 100 different companies, and so any changes are very complicated to undertake, whereas Tesla designed their system in-house and so don’t have any problems with changes.

Would be great to compare reversing safety features of Tesla against others, such as detecting people walking behind the car or cross traffic. I think Tesla is lacking in this area, although a software update could address it given all the cameras.
Tesla actually already introduced reverse emergency braking. It notifies of crossing pedestrians and will brake if necessary. This already assures that it's safer, considering Tesla AEB uses predictive terms and not when the obstacle is already there and therefore too late, like the tests by Euro NCAP show.
So much better than my Kia eNiro which just beeps, the Tesla will brake.

The VW id3 and id4 does not even come close to the Tesla model 3 and Y because of the SOFTWARE. Period.
They are also way too expensive at least in the UK. They don’t even give you a granny cable that’s extra.
💯Safety too! Did you see the Model Y in China that became airborne and *flipped* 10+ times? All 4 occupants were relatively unscathed. AMAZING.

Too true, I never use the rain sensor, or any of the Tesla Autopilot crap. The other night, I was driving, with my daughters, along a 20mph suburban road, on Autopilot, to demo to them how rubbish it is, when we passed a parked car, alongside the kerb, in completely normal circumstances. Autopilot had a hissy-fit, applied the brakes, and the Deliveroo moped rider behind us, had to swerve past us, peeping his peeper... At 20 mph, right? So embarrassing... Basically, Tesla auto-anything is crap. Except...the full activation of the older matrix headlights, which is genuinely excellent!
@@Roll_the_Bones Autopilot in the UK is only meant to be used on divided roads - ie motorways. It works mostly on other roads, but don't complain when it doesn't.

Great review. I have the same car but with 19” wheels and similar efficiency. Agree with the pros and cons on this one. Hopefully many of the cons just a software update away.
Thanks Richard, a well balanced review. I love my Model Y but would agree that autopilot could be better. It often tries to take me off at junctions when I want to carry on, eg. at the A34 Tothill southbound exit and I have to wrestle it out of autopilot. Also the lack of stalks would be a deal breaker for me so I hope the rumoured NCAP issue persuades Tesla to drop it from the juniper refresh.
Not only does the ID.3 have better headlights despite them being 4 years older but being a hatchback makes the ID.3 many times more practical.
Wish they had made the Model 3 a hatchback and then I would have chosen one over an ID.3.
There’s a lot of speculation that the new models mentioned on last week’s quarterly earnings call, due out from the end of this year, will include a hatchback.
It is only speculation however. But given these new models are intended to be lower priced than the 3 and Y, it would seem reasonable to expect something Golf sized, perhaps.
And you can get it with dynamic chassis control, making it more comfortable and quieter, at least compared to the older Tesla.
The ID3 is also a much better car than a Tesla for driving around town. Manoeuvrability is basically the best you can get in any family car.

That’s what the Model Y is for. Can’t imagine ever choosing an ID3 over a Tesla 😂
Fords Rain sensor is also rubbish on my PHEV Kuga, I've turned it off and using the manual version

I’ve a Model Y LR, and while I love it, I totally agree re the autopilot: if you change lanes, it disengages whereas I expected it to re-engage once I’d finished the lane change like my Volvo V90 did. As a result, I rarely use the cruise on the Tesla. It will probably get refined via an OTA update at some point though, so all good etc..

Great video as usual! We have a 2023 Model 3 Dual Motor and a Model Y RWD. The build quality on my wifes Y is absolutely incredible, its super quiet and I often find myself borrowing it to pick the lads up for a night out as the space inside it is insane. Granted the Model Y is a funny looking thing but I think a standard Model Y is the most complete EV you can currently get. We are taking it to Conwall in July for the extra room (although never had a problem with my Model 3!)
With EV cars it’s software that counts and so far nobody beats Tesla.
Tesla is great at car software.
But its still a car, and Tesla is not quite as good at making their cars drive well and feel nice.
XPENG does. It is not for nothing VW invested $700Million in XPENG and their cars have already got better as a result of it.
Software is important for any car nowadays, everything is driven by software / firmware in modern cars.
@@vasil7410 Software certainly is important. But its a car that physically has to move you, so “hardware” is kind of important too. This is where Tesla still has room for improvement.
What's holding me away from Tesla model 3 and Y at the moment, is my fear of rust and that they do not zinc coat their steel. Am I just over cautious and remembering rust on cars back in the 80's and 90's or is my fear real when most cars now are zinc coated or use non ferrous components? Then there's the issues Richard mentions like wipers not working and everything mostly done on a screen. What if you eyesight for near objects is not 100% but good enough to see the speedo and locate buttons and switchgear? I'm not convinced that everything should be screen based and so minimal regards having a switch or lever for basic functions. IMO they have taken the minimalistic thing too far. Anyway these are the fears and dislikes I have regards these two models at the moment so won't be buying one.
Completely agree with the wipers our 2023 model y with hardware 4 has rubbish wipers, way worse than our 2016 Nissan qashqai
Anyone in the uk compared insurance costs to id3 or born? I’ve heard the Tesla 3 can be very high, but some numbers would be useful.
Dog mode: My wife and daughter love it, even when we are not traveling with our dogs! My daughter falls asleep in the back seat, and I don't have to disturb her when I leave the car for a few minutes. Great feature, even for people!

Not sure if it's an apple thing but on android I can do all those things you mentioned about the tesla nav. Plus Google Assistant is much easier to control by voice than tesla which I never managed to get to work without putting on an American accent
Rain sensor is a bit poor. On my M3LR I just flick the stalk button once and it mostly then works ok, but that won't work on highland! My biggest annoyance is that you can't have just cruise control on without it doing the other drive assists. The autopilot just can't cope with our narrow town or country roads so you have to constantly intervene to stop it dramatically slowing down. Biggest negative about the car so far.
You can have cruise control only without self drive. Just set it for one click only.
@@user-du8zx2ho5w might be misunderstanding you - pressing the stalk once gives cruise control, but it still does the panic braking if you go around parked cars or it sees a lamppost it doesn't like the look of? I use it a lot in town to keep to the 20/30/40 mph limits in my other cars, but it's no use in the Tesla.
I trust Auto-Pilot enhanced, but what I don't like about it is the steering nag! So I put the car into the cruise mode, that way I can move the steering around, but he car is breaking and accelerating! If I want to change lanes, I can do that that no problem.

Regarding autopilot, I don't agree with what you say. Personally, I prefer to control the car rather than control me. The example you mentioned of going on a road at 70 and then the limit is at 50 and the Tesla remains at 70, I think it's correct because I gave him an instruction to drive at 70 and the car just has to comply.
Usual well-balanced video focusing on living with it. But looking at the other comments......M3 performance, really why ?
The only complaint i have now is not about Tesla cars themselves but the exorbitant charge the insurance company have put on them. I would also check on any Chinese EV before buying one for this reason. I run a Zoe GT LINE which cost me £389 last year, it will be interesting to see what my renewal is in August.
That young children can't easily open Tesla door handles is a *feature*, not a bug. ;-).
Stalks are only necessary as long as FSD requires supervision: once in full function, who needs them!
As you say it would be brilliant as Hatchback rather than the extra cost for a model Y

Thanks Richard though you’re a big Tesla fan I think you’ve hit the spot with this review. I don’t like the looks of the Tesla and the lack of stalks finished me completely, I don’t think Tesla headlights are as good because the hardware isn’t good enough and the same with the rain sensors. I also totally dislike lane keeping systems on any car, even my Toyota GR Yaris…..you also mention character, as an EV owner (a BMW i4 eDrive40) for three months I can’t ever see any EV having true character, but there again neither did my previous BMW 320d soot blower. Finally, I don’t think you can ever judge (or truly get to know) a car in one week, I think you really need a month in each one. Please keep up the good work as you are one of the only contributors in the EV world that I would really trust.
