There’s a few Whiting Ranch hiking options, but Red Rock Canyon is the most popular for a good reason. The gently climbing trail makes it way up a oak woodland canyon, eventually ending in a smooth red rock canyon like you’d see in Arizona (but unique to Orange County). Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park is rich with wildlife. I often see squirrels and lizards, and less often deer. The hike is mellow, easy, and is great for families.

I remember this hike from when I came in 2015! It is well before I started doing videos of my hikes! It is a great wildflower spot in late winter/spring. For me, the favorite parts were in the oaks and the wash leading up to, an being at, the base of the red rocks!

Well, I've been hiking this area logn BEFORE all of the signs were installed.
The most interesting section of this canyon is beyond the new signs.
It was a great little place to take a break.
There's also a couple of side trails that now have these signs.
Those were also interesting places to explore.
All of these closed areas are on washes consisting of rock and sand.
These aren't biological soil crusts that would be damage by hiking on them.
If there had been the need for rescues in these areas, I cound understand.
However, the only people that need rescuing in this park are the mountain bikers.
I'm well into my 70's and have watched access to formerly open areas disappear.
People are dismissive of rules that close previously open areas with no just cause.
That's why you see so many of the local people ignoring the signs.
And no, I did not vote for Trump.
But, I'm beginning to understand why!

I was just gonna say.. I'm sure there is a good reason to block off some of the areas mentioned. Then I read the comment below. Apparently those certain people we all know, who were not following the signs posted, were carving their names in the rocks and destroying nature which takes away the beauty, in my eyes. So the signs are there to help avert idiots like that!! And since you brought up Trump ... I don't think I will be voting this year, but I'm sorry to say... Trump may be our next President.

Great video. I'm just now thinking about going on this hike. Do you know if the parking kiosk machine accepts cash? Or is it just all card?

i'm of two minds. i don't like people vandalizing, littering, or destroying nature. those people are scumbags but going a few feet past the "fence" to grab a quick photo isn't hurting the rock. i don't think it's a big deal.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  Před 4 lety +1

I didn't put video of it here, but these people (and most others I see here) weren't just over the rope, they were climbing the cliff, etc. I see it every time I do this hike unfortunately. On this day I even saw some 20 somethings carving their name in the rocks. Sad.
